How do you decide?

My head is just spinning on trying to decide what I want for an e ring. I love oval halos and then i also love the pretty cluster ring. And then on top of that I keep tossing between a blue sapphire and a red spinel or a ruby. Luckily I have a few months to make my mind up. But why does it have to be so hard? Ggrrr!!!

Here are things that may help you:

1) Try on lots of rings in person. Go to a stores like Tiffany's, a high antique store, etc (i.e. stores with different styles of jewelry), and try on rings. What you like in a picture may not be what you like on your hand.

2) Cut out pictures of rings that sing to you, or save images in a folder. After a while, they will probably fall into a few categories. For example, I like large ovals, round stones in halos, and emerald cut stones in a 3 stone ring. Why, I ask myself. I don't know, but I just like them :twirl:

3) What will you like for a long time? (Yes, you can reset, but that's item 5.) For my reset (I had no say in the original ering and it was not my style), I picked a setting that was classic, but it had my own personal twist. It also follows today's trends, but I think a well designed ring, even it bows to trends, can still be attractive over time. I am willing to do more "risky" settings with my right hand rings.

4) What is your lifestyle? For most of my marriage, I've only my plain wedding band because 1) I used to work with my hands and 2) when I got a desk job, I had 2 kids that make my life very active. I still have a "fancy" engagement ring with pave to wear with my wedding band on occasion, and a matching eternity ring if I want to create extra bling with my ering.

5) You don't have to do everything at once. You can just get a center stone for now, and set it into a solitaire. If you want a fancier setting, you can reset later (if you fiance okay with the idea of changing of the ring.) This can save you money now. I kept my center stone, for sentimental reasons, for a reset.

I hope you have fun through the process!

Excellent advice!

I know what I like already in terms of colours and styles, and have started to collect loose gemstones in the hope to have them set eventually.

I believe agonising is part of the fun of buying CS. :naughty:

I was in the very same situation not too long ago - how could I commit the finger real estate to a single ring, forever? So many beautiful alternatives and I had to pick one. The best advice I got was to think of this ring as the ring that represents this moment (your engagement) not necessarily the rest of your life. It may not sound like much but it did allow me to move past this block.

Pregcurious has given plenty of good advice. I used Pinterest to create a board filled with ring pictures, stone pictures and random inspiration images. Looking at all that together showed me the common things linking them (what I should prioritize) and that other rings, while beautiful, didn't quite seem to fit in (so I moved on). I considered my lifestyle (ornate went right out), my usual esthetic choices (looking around my house and wardrobe makes clean and streamlined very obvious) and culled the images down to a just a few, which allowed me sketch exactly what I want and to play with stone choices.

Relax and enjoy!

Thanks guys so much. I am going to start a Pinterest ring page ASAP and in a few weeks I will be able to go into the city with my best friends and try on rings :) so exited for that.

Also, think of what looks good on you colorwise. Folks often come here and have a very clear cut idea of the color they seek, then see it on them and realize its actually not right with their skin tone. Just one more thing to keep in mind.
