Hey all,

Trying to get the hang of judging sapphires, I saw this one and thought it looked promising but then I started wondering if the cutlet is offset and wonky looking? The stats are 6.30mm, unheated VVS clarity.

Cameras do funny things to stones. Hardest thing about buying and selling online. Its always best to insure you know the sellers return process and if they have establish history. It looks to be a beautiful stone. If its cut overseas good chance its not the best cut but to give you an example I just took in a ring with a light yellow sapphire bought from Brilliant earth and the cut is horrible and it will be recut. But the owner never noticed it and the stone face up is a stunner Its not tell you get the 10X on it that you can really see how off the meet points came out

Beautiful colour and cut. If the price is not too pricy, I would suggest you to buy it.

I think it's a beautiful stone. I think it's difficult to find a beautiful purple sapphire. If it's reasonably priced, then go for it.

Looks fine to me. Does the vendor have anything to back up the unheated status claim?

Looks good to me. I love the color.

So the description says "gemstone authenticity confirmation" which really doesn't mean anything right? So then is the price fair even if it is heated and what specifically do I need to ask for that will actually confirm unheated vs unheated?

It depends on the asking price and how much of a stickler you are that the sapphire is unheated. Gemstone authenticity probably means that it is a natural earth mined sapphire and nothing more. I am personally fine with an AGL brief.

The price is $400 which is discounted. I'm going to ask about the verification of heating though.

I sent a message asking about an AGL brief and got this response:

Thank you for your inquiry.
This stone comes with Gemstone Authenticity Confirmation signing by in house expert certifying its
Origin
Treatments (If Any )
Dimensions
Weight
Transparency
Ects.
Fyi this stone mined by our own mine back in Ceylon Sri Lanka.
Best Regards

So then I would have to buy this as a potentially heated stone because this certificate might not really mean anything right? Then is $400 reasonable or does it become an average price if it is heated?

Correct, because they can write whatever they want on that piece of paper, being that it is in-house and thus a strong and clear conflict of interest. I am particular about my sapphire and had a $300 stone sent for an AGL brief, with the sale contingent upon the result.

Even though I don't know how the heat treatment will affect the price, I think it is a very pretty purple stone.

The color sure does look pretty! (I don't feel qualified to tell about the cut.) Sounds very reasonable on the price to me.

To send a stone to the AGL, with postage will cost $100, so for a $400 it doesn’t really make sense to expect a report at that price.

Honestly the heating issue is not make or break for me and I didn't really expect an AGL report but they did indicate that there was a gemstone authentication with the sale so I figured it didn't hurt to ask you know? My only real concern is buying a stone and then finding something even better next week. Thankfully I am more commitment phobic with stones than people lol!

Heating makes / breaks it for me because if it turns out to be heated, because there is now the possibility of diffusion, especially when purchasing from a relatively unknown vendor.

Chrono, is AGL really the only reputable lab for colored stones? I ask because if it hasn't already sold Julia on Etsy has a sapphire with a GCI report (apparently a lab in Thailand).

I guess for my own knowledge I'm wondering if AGL for gemstones is like GIA for diamonds?

It depends on what you are looking for. GIA's report is more expensive but it covers more testing. The AGL brief is less expensive but it doesn't test for diffusion, only heat vs unheated, unless you go for the full AGL report.

Thanks Chrono for all your help and insight, I really appreciate it.
