How horrible!! It makes me so sick!!

I don''t know if anyone saw the horrible news story out of North Carolina about a month and a half ago about Dixie, a 2 year old horse, whose tail was set on fire by some teenage girls.

They apparently used black spray paint and a lighter. Thankfully the horse is slowly recovering, but she did have to have her entire tail amputated!

And now they are learning that her left hind leg has torn ligaments which is going to effect her for the rest of her life. Her owner Vonda has been giving updates on her condition to this website HERE.

She has been obviously footing the entire veterinary bill, so through that website above there is a way to make a donation if you are interested.

Also, the girls that are responsible for this horrific event have not been brought to justice

. From what I understand, there are other young girls who have information about what happened, but are too scared to testify. And apparently the DA does not understand why these other girls are afraid. Hmm, I wonder why....could it be because they already took on a 1000 pound horse? What is stopping them from taking on a 100lb girl too?

There is contact information for the DA handling the matter if anyone else is interested in voicing their concerns about letting these sad excuses for human beings remain free and unpunished.

A lot of serial killers start off mutilating animals.......... I hope these girls can be brought to justice and get some SERIOUS psychological help. I live in NC and I remember when this story first came out. Poor horse, I''m glad he was able to be saved but I can''t imagine what kind of agony that poor creature has endured.

It is beyond me how anyone could do something so cruel to any living being. I hope these girls are brought to justice. Anyone capable of doing something so fundamentally wrong doesn''t deserve to be a part of society. Unfortunately, crimes against animals don''t seem to carry a big punishment...

Moremoremore: I have watched Animal Cops (on rare occasions). It''s just too disturbing to watch on a regular basis...

I've seen animal cops on a few occasions too and I'm always apalled at how people treat their "pets". I think part of the problem stems from a comment one man made about his dog. He was convinced that his rights were being violated because Animal Control was removing his PROPERTY and taking it away. It didn't matter that the dog was in deplorable condition with open sores and a filthy pen. The dog was his PROPERTY and no one had a right to take it from him. The "ownership" of an animal should be more along the lines of "guardianship". A child's legal guardian would NEVER be allowed to behave that way. I just don't understand why a person would even want to have a pet if they see nothing wrong with treating them that way.

That horse's owner loves him very much and has done everything possible to save him. I just hope that he can recover enough to live a good life, if he can't then I hope she won't prolong his suffering to keep from mourning his loss. Perhaps a sizable reward for any information leading to the arrest of the girls responsible will finally convince someone to come forward.


ETA: It sounds like they know exactly who did it but the girls have threatened the other children if they testify. The Harnett Co. sheriff's dept. isn't guaranteeing that the witnesses' identity would be protected and they are afraid of retribution by the girls who did it. Very upsetting!

Hopefully this poor horse will make a good recovery, she is only a young horse and should heal well. Having three beloved horses of my own, I cannot imagine ANYONE being cruel to these magnificent, loving and trusting creatures or any animal. The main problems Dixie will face as far as I can tell will be having no tail to get rid of irritating flies in summer, to use to indicate her body language and protect her from the weather, also the ligament damage can be problematic, however with lots of love, care, and giving nature a good chance she should be able to live a happy comfortable life. She is lucky to have such a great owner to stick by her and I am sure Vonda will do all she can to help her adjust. I pray these " people " are punished to the fullest extent of the law and are made to fully pay for their evil acts. "People" like that or " kids" disgust me, what on earth is wrong with people to motivate them to hurt an animal???

I wish Vonda and Dixie all the luck and love in the world - it warms my heart to know that there are good people out there - despite the actions of some.

Unfortunately there is one more - lost sense of balance which may affect movement even more than damaged ligament.

I still get sick thinking about what happened. I just don''t understand what would possess anyone to do such a horrible thing?!

And it angers me even more to think that those girls are out walking free when Dixie is stuck in her stall behind bars slowly healing.

As for Vonda making the decision on whether to put Dixie down, she didn''t make it without consulting with several veterinarians and equine specialists who all thought this horse had a fighting chance. Dixie''s best interests were always her top priority I assure you.

And yes, Dixie will have future issues to worry about. Flies will always torment her now since she has no tail to swat them away with. Thankfully, from what I understand, the local community has been donating varies items including top quality fly sheets. So combined with fly sheets and some good fly spray, hopefully the annoyance will be minimal.

Well I think that''s part of the original problem that made them such degenerates in the first place...aka bad parenting or absentee parenting. I would so turn my child in if they did that, they would have to face the consequences of their horrible actions!!

And the amazing thing is that this horse still trusts humans! After all she has been through, she still is affectionate with her owner and completely lets the owner and the vets do what they need to do.

Argh, I must find a way to make my anger, frustration, etc. with these girls to productive use.

I agree! I''ve seen a number of stories that state that our youngest generation is completely lacking in empathy for a number of reasons, including being raised by parents who don''t hold their child(ren) enough! There is also so many crime dramas on tv. We''re totally desensitizing young kids and I''m kind of scared to even imagine how many more of these types of abusive violent crimes will happen as time goes on.

I completely know what you mean. Some people think people should be revered above animals. I feel like those girls are WORSE than animals and I have no sympathy for them. I don''t care how old they are...they''re old enough to know right from wrong.

I have zero tolerance for cruelty to animals. ZERO. It breaks my heart every time, especially cases like these where some sick jerks think it''s funny. These animals are completely helpless and depend on humans for their care, and while most of the time I am a calm, reasonable, and very nice person, stories like this make me just want to find those people and rip their hearts out.

It makes me feel a little better that the animal has not suffered such emotional damage as to fear even its owner and the vets...but I''m still fuming and definitely agree with Mara and others above...if those wenches were my kids they''d have their butts hauled off to be reported.

There is nothing like a story of animal cruelty to release the savage side of me also - I so hope and pray that those evil doers are made to face the consequences of their appalling crime, kids or not. I think on examination of those involved you would be hard pressed to find any brain cells too.
