How involved are you with the fall elections?

I have to admit that I am more energized about the state and US congressional elections this year than I have been in a long time.

I'm actually watching debates on TV for a variety of offices. I'm trying to figure out what these people really stand for so I know who to vote for. Based on tonights debates: I'll go with the republican candidate in one race and the democratic one in the other (I've never voted straight ticket - I always try to pick the right person for the job regardless of party). But that is only 2 out of perhaps 12 positions I'm interested in.

For some reason - I think that this fall's elections are important for both our state and our nation.

Is this just me?...

my wife votes for me.

We're not permitted to talk about politics at PS, Perry!

But this post isn't about politics. Its about the election process - and how important I feel it to be at this time.

I'm not talking about the pro's or con's of any one party or candidate; nor any specific issue.

Very very very very very very involved. Could not be more important.

I'm trying to be involved...I cant believe some of these commercials. They are the worst I've ever seen. Totally turning/twisting
peoples words. :nono:

Not very involved at all. Around here, the choices are hardly choices. The differences between the candidates of the various parties is minimal. Most races - and all media ads, just devolve into "God-offs" - whichever party invokes God the most, wins, period. I can predict every race with almost perfect accuracy. Seems rather pointless to get into a froth over it.

It's all very depressing.

Stick to discussions about elections and not the politics and it is fine. :))

Not at all. I'm a CA resident living in CT moving to western NY next spring.

Extremely involved. SO is a campaign strategist for a candidate who is running against the incumbent for a seat in the state legistlature here. It's pretty exciting to watch the process from the inside!

Is it anything like Brothers and Sisters? (forgive me if you don't watch or haven't seen the show, it's one of my faves and kind of touches on the topic you described)

A post about the elections isn't about politics?

I don't see it that way and I'd rather not read about politics and religion here but I've noted my objection with you.

I guess if you're determined to talk about the elections then talk about them. There are other places where I can do that.

I've never watched the show, Davi...I don't care for either Sally Fields or Calista Flockheart (I think those actors are on that show, right?) It's a lot of networking, writing, coaching, etc. We're in a town that is almost totally one party biased and it has been a huge challenge to get people to look at the issues rather than a D or an R behind a candidate's name.

ImDanny: I'm sure the mods will step in and let us know if we're in violation of the "no political discussions" rule. Asking how involved people are in the fall elections is a pretty vague question, imo, so I don't really see the harm?

lets talk some politics... :appl:

Hey Perry --- Not just you.

These elections seem to be VERY important for the future of our state as well and the country as a whole.

On the state level, we are voting on adding (or not adding) a state income tax (in addition to sales tax & property tax) and other important things that will have benefits/consequences for years/generations to come.

On a national level I don't see how it could get any bigger. There is a lot at stake.

I'm really disturbed by the way a lot of the politicians are handling things this election. The adds seem to be a lot more negative this year with some of them being made of out and out lies. There are people bending rules and hiding stuff.

We need people in these important positions who are honest and decent. No drug dealers (state level...), abusers, rapists, tax skippers, or liars. I don't care what letter they want to stick next to their name -- If they aren't honest I'm NOT voting for them.

It is also sad that in some cases it comes down to choosing between this bad choice and that bad choice.

Oh..... And a very upsetting thing I saw yesterday was that NY didn't send out ballots to the military. The people who put their lives on the line to protect us and our country deserve to vote as much (or more than) any of us. --- I hope they correct this mistake and make sure those votes get counted.

Thanks for asking Perry. I'm loving the elections this year. I'm doing all I can, writing letters and emails, talking to anyone interested and making campaign donations. I wanted to attend a "meet and greet" tommorow, but I'll have 4 kids, 5 and under, so I have to settle for a donation. Wish we could talk more, I think the upcoming elections will be very important.

Thanks all who are interested (I'm not much of one for listing names - but you know who you are).

Yes, I agree very important. More important is that we participate.

Perhaps we can have a post election party somewhere .

In the meantime I have to figure out who I'm going to vote for about 10 positions yet.

Have a great day - and thanks for being involved.

Post election party would be fun. I'm sad that I can't even go to the ones I usually go to since I've got to get up early for classes -- plus going to all mail in voting has kind of taken some of the "importance" (not really importance, more of the impact) out of election day since most people mail their stuff in before then and you don't really hear anything until some hours/days after.

Thank you for starting this thread. People seem to forget how important their "only one vote" actually is and don't bother to get involved -- especially in mid-terms.

Have a great day Perry!

Very involved, but my candidate lost the primary by 142 votes. Sad that so many people think their vote does not count. It really does. All politics is local.

Fairly involved. I'm not a people-person, so I'm not going door to door, but I am donating what I can and writing letters to the editor, things like that. I'm in Colo, and the mid term this year is a big deal to me. All elections are important, but this one especially.
