As a companion poll to How long between engagement & wedding? I thought it might be fun to see how long people generally dated before they got engaged!

Since knowing the person for a while before you start dating makes a large impact if you get engaged quickly, I''m breaking down those date ranges, but not the ones where you have dated for a while. Hope no one objects to that!

"none of the above", sort of. Ours wasn''t a normal traditional courtship. We met online, 7000 miles apart, and got to know each other through emails for the first six months before we met in real life. Due to the long distance between us, we were only able to spend short periods together (eg birthdays, Christmas and a summer vacation each year) but we did write thousands and thousands of emails.

Technically, we knew each other for just over two years between first contact and proposal. In terms of real live dating, we spent about ten weeks of those two years actually together in person.

Hehe, I thought with 17 choices I''d have my bases covered!

You do have an interesting story though, and I bet other people won''t fit into categories as well either. I put 3 to 4 years, but in reality, we dated for 4 months in 1999, then didn''t talk for about a year, then were friends for about 2 years, and have been together for just over 3 years since we decided to start dating again. So I don''t really know where that puts us exactly.

We dated for just over 4 years straight before we got engaged, but had known each other for more like 7 years. We dated for about a year when we first met, broke up mutually, stayed friends and one drunken night confessed our love for one another...

We had a 7 month engagement.

We dated for 4 years and got engaged just around the 4 year mark. We have been married 19 years and our 20th is coming in September. But I say we have been together 23 years. And my husband loves to say 23 years in a row. That cracks him up. Must be a guy thing.

I think there is another poll/thread on this subject. It sounds very familiar. Anyways, we dated over 4 years when we got engaged.

Ha! I''m not the only one that long. Well, it was almost 7 years from the time we first met til we got engaged. We were in school most of that time tho and had very little money. Err, that''s my lame rationale for makign her wait that long.

We started dating in Jan and got engaged last week....so 11 months.

My gf and I knew each other in college, but we never dated. Right before graduation we started going out, and have been together for 19 months now. Since I plan on popping the questions this Christmas, I voted 1.5-2 years, assuming she says yes of course

We started dating 3 months after we met, and were engaged 6 months later. The wedding was a year after the engagement.

10.5 months, but we knew each other for a year before we started dating.
