How low would you go (color / clarity) for a right hand ring, and some rhr questions in general?...

Hi everyone!

So because I am now diamond-obsessed (thanks in large part to PS!) I am now dreaming up my next 'future project' (I'm not sure if future = 6 mos. or 6+ years, but a girl can always dream!). I am considering a right hand ring. I think that I would like a chunky facet cushion - something a little 'antique-y' or european looking. Some settings that I love from Leon's archives, for instance:

Or, for something quite different than those listed above:

I am thinking of a 3 - 3.5 carat cushion cut center, and am thinking that for purposes of having something 'distinct' from my FVS2 engagement ring, might consider an I - K color, maybe with some fluoro? This would also, of course, help keep the price down.

A few questions that I'm grappling with that I'd love some PS advice on include:

1) What features do you think make a right hand ring *not* look engagement-ringish? I was thinking that a three or five stone would make it distinct, but I know that many people have gorgeous three or five stones as engagement rings. I'd love some of your thoughts on this...

2) How low would you go in color, assuming that the engagement ring was an F? I don't mind it looking 'distinct' from my e-ring, and would infact like it to have 'warmth', but I don't want it looking noticeably yellow when side-to-side with my e-ring. I know that the cut of the stone would impact how it faces up - I would, of course, endeavor to get a great cut. I'm also thinking of something in an eye-clean SI1 or SI2.

3) If I went with a pink halo, does anyone know how this affects center stone color consideration?

4) Size wise, I want something that doesn't overshadow my e-ring, but that does make an impact and can stand on it's own. I know that cushions tend to face up smaller than RB's, which is why I was thinking of the 3 - 3.5 ct range. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

For reference sake, the link to my engagement ring is here:

As always, I so very much appreciate any and all feedback!

Thanks, everyone!

Sounds like a fun future project! (Hopefully you can make it happen in 6 months instead of 6 years!) Here''s my two or three cents:

1. I think anything that''s not a solitaire is fine for a RHR and doesn''t look engagementy: a 3 stone, a 5 stone, a halo, etc.

2. If you''re going for an antique look, definitely look at at least Js and Ks, too. You should probably take a shopping trip to an estate jeweler just to see what colors you like and don''t like. I like warmer tones in antique stones/antique settings, because they sort of seem to just "match" if you know what I mean

3. As for what color diamond to go with a pink halo, a pink halo seems pretty modern to me, and I don''t know if a warmer stone would really go with the pink halo. Just my opinion, of course!

4. I forget what size e-ring you have, but as long as you get something that''s a little smaller in mm, including the halo, I think you shouldn''t have to worry about it overshadowing your e-ring.

Keep us posted-I can''t wait to see what you end up with!

Thanks for the feedback, T2of2!

Everything that you said makes a lot of sense. I agree that a pink halo with warmer colored stones might look odd.

One question that I have - when you say go down to ''at least'' a J or K, what about lower than that? I''ve tried to do searches for feedback or examples of L or M colors, as ERD has some premium cut cushions in these colors that are in the size range that I''m looking for, and that are obviously priced far better than higher graded colors (which would serve the interest of making this happen sooner rather than later!).

So can anyone direct me to feedback or examples of colors with *definite* warmth?

Thanks again!

bem, try searching "old mine cut" (they are really considered cushions), and "antique stones". That should definitely bring up lower colored stones.

You won''t be able to see color very well in pictures. But I agree that since cushions are more antique looking that you can go lower in color and get away with it. I think you''d have to evaluate the color of each stone individually since the tint in stones will vary. I think a setting like MrsSalvo''s new Daniel K cushion halo would be beautiful for a RHR, or I would do a three stone. A three stone is a little harder with a cushion, though, so my tendency might be to lean toward the halo to give it a different look from your e-ring.

Thanks for the feedback!

Ellen - you''re right! I did the searches that you suggested and found lots of posts of lower colored stones.

Diamondseeker - you''re also right... it''s very difficult to actually get a sense of the effect of the color in a photo.

So - I guess it is a diamond by diamond thing. I''m also wondering how difficult it might be to source side stones to match a lower color? Again, I suppose that depends.

Oh, so many variables!
