Due to having put on weight in the past few years, my ring size has gone up and some of my rings no longer fit.

I made enquiries today with a local jeweller about re-sizing rings in platinum, 14K and 18K WG, and they replied with some basic quotes.

Before I reveal the quotes, I would like to enquire about how much it would cost for PSers to have their rings re-sized 2 sizes up in platinum and WG please, as I believe it will once again demonstrate the high cost of jewellery in UK when compared with other locations.

Please give an indication of your country of residence/location if at all possible.

Thanks for everyone's input and help in advance.

I have had to resize a few of my rings lately, due to swelling and knuckle getting a bit larger. I think I paid $35 to go up one size 14k. I made the decision to resize 2 diamond bands that I wore as substitute wedding bands to fit my right ring finger and then switch my colored stone rings from the right hand to the left....would have cost me too much to have all the cs rings resized. I don't really like to wear my rings switched around like that. I have resized a few of my favorite cs rings so that I can still wear them on my right hand though. I live in the Midwest USA. I go to a small jewelry store, not a well-known chain.

Last year I had a ring sized up 2.5 sizes and it cost me just a tad over $100 :o Good thing it was a gift..cuz I am not sure the ring is really even worth what I paid to have it sized..

ETA it is 14K and I am in the midwest in the US

Last year, I paid $35 to have a 14k yg ring sized in Southern California.

It has cost me apx $35 to re-size a ring one-and-one-half size larger (California and Washington).

I presume sizing down costs less than sizing up? I resized a few rings down 2 sizes for $50 each.

I believe re-sizing up would require additional precious metal to fill the gap, hence it is more expensive.

I shall wait another day before revealing the quotes I received.

Thanks for everyone's input so far.

It would depend on the ring and how far it has to be sized up or down.

Sizing up a ring can be a very simple matter of stretching the ring on a mandrel or ring stretcher. The increase in circumference in sizing up from a size 6 to a size 7 is around 3%, which would not be noticeable in the thickness. This is pretty quick and easy (much faster than cutting, soldering, cleaning up, etc). This is particularly good for patterned bands, where the pattern would be disrupted if the ring is cut and extra material added.

But, of course, not all rings can be stretched. If it has stones, delicate metalwork, etc, then stretching might be just a tad destructive :o Then, the ring has to be cut, new material soldered in (lasered, depending on the ring), filed to shape perfectly and refinished. That is a lot more work and a lot more expensive.

Sizing down is, generally, a matter of cutting, soldering and cleaning up. The material cut is not worth a lot (using the calculations above, 3% of a 3 gram ring is 0.1 grams, which would be worth around $5, considering loss, refining, etc).

I don't think I have ever paid more then $50.

Here you go, the quotes I received from the local jeweller near where I work:

70 GBP for platinum, 55 GBP for white gold, and if rhodium re-plating is required, that will cost another 20 GBP!!!

The white gold channel set carre band that needs re-sizing is likely to be more than 2 sizes up, and it may not be doable.

I shall take them to the jeweller for evaluation once I have the money to spare to do the work.

BTW, the same jeweller repaired my 3-stone ruby ring last year, by sourcing a very well-matched 0.2ct approx. G/H diamond side stone, popped the other side stone out and re-set both in the bezels, and to re-dipped the ring in rhodium, all for the grand sum of 400 GBP!!!

I went ahead with the repair and paid in instalments.

I'm not familar with exchange rates, so I used a converter and forgive me if I'm wrong on these…so the platinum sizing was $115? That actually doesn't seem too bad, I paid $80 to have a ring sized down 3 sizes (which I will never do again btw!) The white gold was $82? That seems pretty high. The rhodium doesn't seem that out of line to me, I pay $35 to have a ring rhodium dipped. Maybe prices are high in my area! (NJ)
