How small is too small for a FCD?

This fancy deep blue diamond has amazing color and it's within my budget, but it's so tiny. At just 5 points and 2.24 x 2.34 x 1.60 mm, is it too small to even be noticed in a piece of jewelry?

Have you tried on jewelry pieces with 5 point stones to determine if you like them?

Wow!
QUICK! Which vendor? :Up_to_something: :Up_to_something: :Up_to_something:

Don't shoot me but I have to say that people and FCDs vary.
Many people would not bother with a stone under a carat, so they consider more affordable CSs.
I totally respect this.

Natural blue diamonds of strong color are astronomically expensive and rare, so we working people have to do without or grab a small one when it floats down the river.
Some people, who've fallen under the FCD spell like me, will find certain tiny FCDs possessing exceptional color to be totally worth the money, and IMHO that FCD does considering all the shades of blue I've seen in natural diamonds.
I love the violet I see in it.

For a short time I owned a tiny Fancy Deep Blue emerald cut.
I traded it in and now kick myself for doing so.
My hang up was I had to work so hard to get light into and out of it in a photograph compared to the rest of the collection.
Today, I appreciate it's inky depths.

My 8-point Fancy Intense Greenish Blue pear has an exceptionally strong presence for its size.
Although it's the smallest of 12 it is probably my second favorite.
Do I wish it was larger? Sure, but then it may have been too expensive for me.
Some FCDs are like hot peppers in that they are small but potent.

If you put a zillion 5 point FCDs of all colors side by side, a few would pop out because of their color.
It looks like you have found one that would stand out.
If the price is acceptable, I'd grab it. (Sorry, as usual with FCDs I have no clue what it's worth.)

Then again, don't let anyone talk you into buying this.
If you feel 5 points is just too small, pass it up ... but you'd better save up your pennies if you want something larger with this color.

I think you'd have to consider the setting very carefully so the diamond does not disappear.
A full bezel would probably cover a good 20% of the top view of a 5 point diamond.

I haven't, although I do have a 5 point round fancy greenish blue diamond. I think that's why I hesistate, because I know that diamond is overwhelmed by my other larger, more intense stones. It just doesn't really stand out.

It is the size of a melee - have you drawn this out to see how large 2 mm is?

Is your goal is for it to 'fit in' with your other stones as a loose collection, or set it alone or to set it with some of your other FCDs?
I used to have a 0.65 ct Yellow heart but traded it in because I wanted a loose collection that looked nice together.
The large Yellow stood out like a sore thumb so back it went.
It's tempting to grab larger FCDs of more affordable colors and smaller ones of the expensive colors but only you can decide if the results are aesthetically pleasing to you.

I think you have to decide if your goal is the appearance of the collection or the merits of the individual members.
If the former your collection will take much longer to build.

Even if your goal is the collection, I know some FCD collectors ignore matching size and shape because FCDs are just too rare.
They just shoot to assemble their view of the perfect combination of colors.

Do you have a goal of a ring of multiple FCDs? A bracelet or necklace?
FCD earrings are a challenge since most gals want them to match, and good luck finding multiple matching pairs of FCDs. ;(

Yes, I know exactly how tiny it is. I have a round that has approximately the same dimensions.

I do want it to fit in with the greater collection because my eventual goal is to use most them in a pendant. It's definitely not like any other stone I have in shape or color, but maybe that's ok.

This is me.

Hmmm, 5 points is pretty tiny.

But lately I've been working on the idea of a rainbow band, with 2mm fcds in a spectrum of colours, so I guess it depends on what you want to do with it.

If your intention is to do a cluster of some sort, they all must be around the same size thereabouts else this little guy is bound to get "lost" amongst its larger kin.

Beautiful stone, but probably not right for me. So if anyone is interested ( ;) Kenny) the vendor is Red Diam. I've purchased 4 stones from them and have nothing but wonderful things to say about the company.

It's not posted on their website, but you can call/e-mail to ask about it if you are interested. It's part of a pair with the other stone being a fancy puplish pink heart of equal size.

Is it this listing? It's the only heart pear I could find.
It is a different pic.
Your pic is on the left, and the above pair listing pic is on the right.

If so it's 8 point not 5.
Also it's not pure blue (Fancy Deep Blue) it's Fancy Deep Gray Blue.
With no lab report I'll take a pass.
I'm not a risk taker or hoping to get lucky.

Also, I only buy if a stand alone stone has an-internet-published price.
I'm not comfortable with asking a seller to come up with a price.
Just my way.

Thanks though. :wink2: :wavey:

Nope, not the same stones.

Susie reading all of your posts I think your initial gut reaction was the right one for you ie pass it by. I adore FCDs BUT to get enjoyment I need to turn them into jewellery - not sitting in a box (although I absolutely understand the joy of doing that). At 0.5 AND in a heart shape it's difficult to incorporate into a setting that will oooomph up the size and not darken it too much.

If it had been a 0.5ct round I would have suggested having it as the centre piece of a flower design but being a heart that would be odd!

Also, in your first pic, I see tons of grey. I appreciate that's just a photo but it would be enough to make me walk away. Anyway, good luck with finding something equally as lovely.

Then maybe someone bought it or it's on hold.

LD, it was 5 points not 50.

I remember those blue hearts. I considered buying the set, but ended up buying something else. I kind of regret not getting them, but I unfortunately can't buy everything I want :(

I have bought over a dozen fcd from reddiam and I know they will send the stone in for grading at your request.

Wow, that set would make a killer piece of jewelry. I used to dislike hearts until I joined PS.

Anonymous- would you be willing to share what you bought instead? I saw you had a thread a few years back where you shared some of your collection. Any new acquisitions?

I would have shared these earlier but quite frankly I'm embarrassed of my pics. The stones look great in real life but for some reason my camera gives them an orangy tint that drives me nuts. Anyway here they are. Both graded by GIA.

Fancy Intense Pink
Oval
.32ct
SI1
4.58x3.46x2.44
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Good

Fancy Deep Pink
Pear
.26ct
SI2
5.09x3.59x2.08
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Good

The .32 FIP oval is easily the nicest stone I own. Unfortunately the pics do not do her justice

Beautiful pinks, Anon. :cheeky:

I'll ask them if you don't know but since you have so much experience with this vendor ...
If GIA grading is higher or lower than their in-house grading do they adjust the previously-published price?
Am I obligated to buy it if I don't like what GIA graded it?

I know you've passed, but I saw this picture today and thought it would be a fabulous way to showcase a small FCD:

From my experience you are never obligated. I had them send in a stone for clarity grading, it only had a color only report. I had told them I would buy it if it came back XXX or better, it didn't so I didn't end up buying. No cost to me.

AN0NYM0US- Beautiful stones! Thank you for sharing.

This is the sort of design I was referencing where I was saying that if you had a round it would be easier to work in as a central feature. With a heart it's more difficult to achieve such a good flowing design.
