How to determine if the sapphire is real and reset?

Hello,

I am new here an just singed up to get some jewelry advice. I recently bought a very cheaply priced piece from Etsy. It was a pendant with a 6 mm marquise cut blue sapphire which I was told was genuine set in a gold plated pedant surrounded by cz. It is dated back to 1983.

My plan was to buy a nice looking piece of jewelry for super cheap, but I wanted to determine if the sapphire in the pendant is real, and if it is I would like to have a replica pendant made of real gold and to set diamonds instead of cz around the sapphire. I wont be supremely disappointed however if it is not actually a sapphire since it was really cheap and didn't come with a cert or anything like that.

How would I approach a jeweler about testing the sapphire and how much would that cost me? Has anyone had a replica pendant commissioned and if so how did they go about doing it? And I was also wondering how to determine the side stone size so that I may be able to figure out how much it would cost to get nice diamonds of this size to set in the pendant.

Any help is much appreciated :) Thank you.

Update: It is a real sapphire, its a Montana sapphire that has been heat treated. I bought a new chain for it turns out the one I had is actually gold and I can sell it at some point but for whatever reason I didn't feel like doing it today.

I will at some point reset in a real pendant and replace the cz with diamonds but I'm still not sure how to do that. I'm sure I'll figure it out in time.

Last update: After exploring my options I brought it to a jeweler and put down a down payment so that it can be set into 14K white gold with 14 .02 ct diamonds. I am so excited. But will miss it dearly as I won't see it again for a month. :(
