How to determine the “fair price” or “wholesale price” of a stone (especially if it’s of a large size)?

Hi everyone, I’m helping a close friend of mine evaluate a large stone that she is purchasing. She does not live in the US and is planning to go through a dealer/jeweler (Not sure what to call them) to acquire said stone (quite a common practice where we are from). She is planning to go see the stone herself before taking a call. She is deciding between a princess cut and a cushion cut and is looking at the 6-8ct range (a very large stone!) I told her whatever I could think of of how to evaluate the stone etc. but the last question she had was about price - is there any way to determine what is the wholesale price for a stone (so she can figure out if she’s getting a good deal)?

She could hire an appraiser of her choosing to look at the paperwork and to give her a very good understanding of retail, wholesale and discuss the merits of making an offer rather than just paying what is asked should there be sufficient room for the seller to make an adjustment. Not every deal is overpriced. Some deals are priced so low that there is no room to haggle. Other times, a smart offer based on reality, is not unwelcome.

Thank you for your reply! I'll pass on the info to her. I can understand why hiring an appraiser makes sense at those sizes, definitely!
