generally you do not get what you paid for, unless you bought a stone with a great upgrade policy. check with the vendor where you got your stone. you can maybe get trade-in at another vendor but you will not get what you paid for the stone. another option could be to sell the stone on consignment, you may get 30-50% of value

some vendors have 100% trade in policies, it depends on the vendor. most vendors do not. I am not sure how much you could get on consignment, 30-50% is a ballpark I have read on PS before but may be different based on your situation. check with the vendor you got the stone from to see if they have an upgrade/buyback policy, if they do not you can look into other options.

I assume your jeweler doesn’t have an upgrade policy? And that you are aware that a cushion of the same weight will look smaller than a well cut round of similar weight? Second, is your round well cut? If it is an ideal or super ideal, you might be able to find a vendor who will consign it for you (try GOG or Pearlmans or maybe even Engagement Rings Direct). If it isn’t… it MIGHT (might) make sense to have your round re-cut and re-certified. BGD does re-cuts. It will cost you some money up front. BUT… it will enable you to sell your diamond for more and faster if your cut improves dramatically. Especially with Valentine’s Day approaching in February.
What is your color and clarity and carat weight now?
If BGD can recut for you (not every stone is a candidate, or if they are the performance improvement might be negligible in relation to the loss of carat weight) and you can find someplace to consign with… you will likely see more money than if you consign an average stone… if you can find someone to consign with reasonably.
How much money you are willing to put toward an upgraded cushion will also have an effect on what you can work out for your round. If your round is a super ideal G VS2 of 1.27 carats (good mover) and you want to buy a 2 carat cushion, you might find that a vendor is more likely to work with you.

+1. And some of the weight will be in the corners (which a round doesn't have). A 1ct RB has a diameter of about 6.5mm, but a 1ct cushion might have dimensions <6mm in L and W. Not many people kite set cushions, so either the L or the W is the finger coverage that you will get.
So the cushion will appear smaller and cover less of your finger, even if the surface area of the cushion is bigger (33.2 sq mm for the RB vs 36 sq mm for the cushion).

This varies depending on what you are looking to do, what the stats of your round brilliant is and how you want your cushion to be.
Different vendors have different upgrade policies and usually for an upgrade to take place one trades in their original stone for a bigger one.
You don't necessarily have to go back to your original vendor, but they usually will help you out the most being that you are a repeat customer.
