I just stumbled across this from another website I frequent. I figured with the other thread about how to be a good wife, that this would be interesting as well.
I personally find it funny, but it''s because I''m pretty laid back about the whole "feminism" thing.
Reading it, it almost seems like satire now...but things really used to be this way!!! Crazy.

Anyway...here it is!! (Don''t worry if you can''t read the print, scroll down where someone typed it all out).

Ha! That was actually a pretty fun read...I''m like you luckystar, I''m typically very laid back about these types of articles and can see the humor in them since they just don''t apply to life today. I do agree with #8, though...keeping "girls" happy by giving them lots of breaks to fix themselves up a bit, hee hee. I wonder if there is some outdated version of this for men somewhere, as far as what it took to hire a male employee and keep him happy. Hmm.

I do like #10. I''m not a big fan of profanity.

From a guys perspective; and a person who has hired, fired, and supervised people in the past.

While things have certainly changed from long ago - and there are clearly some points in the article that no longer apply (and I question if a few ever really did - but understand where they came from).... Many of the other points are actually still valid today for a good chunk of the female population. There are of course many gals who are exceptions to those rules - and who can work outside of them.

I will also say that I prefer to hire gals when I could. The right kind of gal will be the best worker - as long as I have provided the right environment (which includes a restroom with shelf space for gals to store things).

Guys have their advantages too - but typically work best under different conditions than most gals.

The biggest issue any good manager or supervisor has (and they are not good unless they can at least halfway accomplish this) is to blend a work environment where both guys and gals work productively together in - without excessive friction, attitudes, and complaints. I am not going to say I was perfect at it... I will only say that I understood that there were issues and tried my best at making it work right and choosing & working with & eliminating a few people to have a good working environment.

You know what. It''s the people''s comments below the article who claim, "Sorry Ladiees, this is still how it is today. This list is pretty accurate." that make it a continuous struggle to feel like women are equal in the workplace. They''re not.

I work in an office of 150, all male engineers. The only women they''ve hired are for AP/AR, HR and IP. That''s it. They''re all assistants of some sort. Now, you get out in the factory section and there are two female supervisors but they''ve been here 15 years. We''ve brought in countless outsiders in management positions and we''ve had women apply for upper level jobs. My company never seems to hire them or promote within. Am I working in the wrong office? the wrong field? the wrong part of the country? How is it that women could even be compared on an equal level when there are no such pairings?

Starset...

As an Engineer... and working in a highly technical field... I suspect that you are working for the wrong company - and perhaps in the wrong part of the US (there are some definite cultural differences as you move arround the US). Our engineering workplace has about a half dozen gals, including in supervision positions.

My comments above could perhaps be better summed up as follows: Women tend to work and function differently than men. In general, men and women are different creatures emotionally. There are also some physical differences; which provides advantages for certain jobs and disadvantages for others (but their are always some women and some men who cross over on those advantages).

The key to hiring and getting a productive worker is to build an environment that the worker is most productive in. Most women then to need a different environment than most men.

Now a person hiring people and structuring a company has a couple of choices...

1) If the company is largly male based - they can look for women who will fit in best to a male based environment (hence, the concept behind the above rules on how to hire a women). If the companay (or group) is largly women based (and these exist) - they will largely look for men that can fit in (and I have been fired from a largely women based group becasue I did not fit in).

2) If the company is to be largely mixed then a different work environment must be created than if the company is largly male or female.

The real problem - is too many managers who are guys - and gals - do not either recognize the differences and the issues; or don't want to put forth the efforts to change their workplace to accomodate a reasonably mixed workplace.

Personal experience tells me that this is not the easiest thing to do - but well worth it when you get a good mixed team working together. Good gals can bring out the best in guys... and good guys can bring out the best in gals...

I suggest that you look arround: I am sure there is a better oportunity for you somewhere.
