How to set to play up the color on this aqua?

Full disclosure, this won’t be set til middle of next year as I just sent my unloved diamond necklace to DK for a reset. Plus I’ll prob buy a tanzanite to throw into the necklace because I did not love the lab emerald I wanted to give my sister. I’ll just save my money and buy her a real emerald when she’s older.

Anyway the aqua is very light. I want it to be as dark as possible as that’s my preference for aquas. I josh couldn’t resist that it’s an OEC. Looking for ideas on how to best set this so I can obsess over it for months. 580FAABA-0AE0-4E31-9D21-6CBDB093331A.jpeg9589F54C-C823-4BAF-A964-FB9D84E6C373.jpeg7DC29206-D9E7-41AB-80B6-20F92D103F3F.jpeg

Here’s my ideas. Although I think I like the style of the brooch better. It’ll be yellow gold.

speaking to the how to enhance color to be dark (saturated?) as possible

That crazy color gold coating in blue, but just done on the setting that’s under the pavilion? Maybe not an enclosed cup, but substantial metal in that area. No experience - just a guess.

if it’s not the color you really want - I’m not quite sure it’s ‘worth’ custom setting(s) to experiment/try and get it to look the way you wish it were, tho.

pretty stone as is.

I love the colour of the Aqua and its cut, thanks for sharing!!! :kiss2:

Personally, I love the combination of different shades of pink with different shades of aqua/turquoise/blue-greens etc...

For your stone, if it was mine, I would set it with an antique-inspired halo setting, or 3 small round stones on each side, with pink stones like Spinel or Tourmaline.

If it is to be set in metal only, I would use rose gold in a metal halo.

DK :))

Think the budget used setting option is a better idea? It’s a pretty setting.

Halo-ing it was an idea I had but at 10mm it’s already so large. Think a regular bezel would work to play up the color?

@winnietucker you have such slim fingers!

Some ideas of metal halos for you:

Thanks for sharing! I really like the second purple. Is that yours & do you have more pics? I think I’ve seen something like this with CVB. I’ve also considered it a thick bezel. I’ll start googling metal halo this weekend and see where that takes me.

That's the purple Amethyst cabochon in rose gold (I *think*) that belongs to @Acinom, here is another photo of her beautiful ring:

Thanks! I’ll have to do some searching after work.

If you set it in a closed bottom basket that should reflect light back up through the gem.

Sorry work is insane so haven’t been able to google like I want to but I’ll come back with photos and questions!

Oh shoot do we know if a PS-er owns this? I want to see more of it.

Seems like it must be at least a PS lurker for such an unusual cut in an aquamarine set by David Klass! Is your gorgeous stone recently cut or did you get it out of an antique piece?

Whenever I see something interesting on DK’s IG I automatically assume it’s for a PS-er lol.

I got the aqua from a PS-er who got it from another PS-er who got it from gem art services.

Sorry if I wasn't clear - If you put some aluminium foil under the aqua to form a little basket (so it wraps up the sides), does it make the gemstone look how you want? This will show you a similar effect to having a closed basket under the gemstone. It works for some gems and not others - depends on colour/cut etc but it's a neat trick to see if what, if any, difference it could make.

Oh got ya! No it didn’t help...

Thank you!

Another idea for playing up the color is to use contrasting color melee or side stones to trick the eye, a lot of my gemstones appear more saturated next to the opposite color. Here's an example that I will probably set together:

Maybe a neon pink color like Jedi spinel melee or sidestones?

Edit - actually pastel pink may be a better color contrast since the aqua is pastel blue.

I’ll try to see what my local jeweler has to see what that’ll look like. Thanks!

Hi @winnietucker I love your aquamarine - it is gorgeous and very special. My stone is a green beryl. When I received it I thought it was lighter than it appeared in photos. So I quickly changed my mind from white to yellow gold. I thought about rose gold with the green, but since it is an old mine cut I decided yellow gold would work better for some reason. More of a vintage vibe. Regardless of what you decide you aqua is beautiful and I have no doubt you will find the perfect setting for it.

I think an onyx or enamel black halo would best darken the aqua color. If you're going with CS combinations, I suggest orange instead of pink. I think pastel pink will do not a thing for this aqua for darkening the color, only for enjoying the color as it is.

Definitely do not use any green stones with the aqua unless they're a bluish green, or they'll make the aqua look even more pale and not blue.

Not sure if I have posted these before, however, IMHO, pale pink shades will contrast well with pale Aquas. Here are my own combinations.

First up is my pale blue with a hint of green JW Aqua with a pair of pink Morganite traps also cut by Jeff to make a 3-stone ring:

591441 591440

This is a set of mis-match pale blue Aqua and a pale pink Tourmaline pears from Brad as in the The Gem Trader, that I am going to set in a bypass ring of some sort:

589817

Just throwing ideas into the mix.

DK :))

I vote no yellow metal when the blue-green is that subtle. Either Pt or Rh-plated WG.

A light blue would look lovely next to a light purple.
