This stone is 28.97 ctw., measures 17.5 x 15.5 cm. I believe that it is a garnet, possibly a Hessonite/Grossular. It has a lot of tiny snowflake-like inclusions all through it. Would this grade it at about SI1? And is the value in the $60/ctw range?

I''ve searched the web and could find nothing this size!

I bought it at auction and would like to get an idea if I did OK. :) Also, what are the chances of something like this appreciating in value? Obviously it''s not an eye-popper to look at, but it is some hunka rock!

Thanks

Photo from the back to show inclusions and color a bit better (I am not too good at gemstone photos...sorry)

And one more from the side. It is a fully facetted cushion, with a depth of 10 mm (sorry on other note I mean mm, not cm. LOL)

I dunno - I''ve seen Hessonite @ 70+ct. for less than $11/ct. (included also).

I think you answered your own question. One factor in whether something is a collector quality stone is desirability. As you say yourself, it is not an eye popping stone.

Hi and thanks folks. You pretty much confirmed what I "felt." You know what auctions are like (getting carried away) :) Anywho, I did not pay that $60/ct price and there was a 2nd bidder who wanted it...gave me his card and said let him know if I change my mind...which I have and will.
