hi everyone!

I''m a new-to-posting, longtime lurking geek (apparently, looking at my SN, no imagination either). In my months of lurking, I''ve noticed that PS-ers get along well. People who get along well usually have lots in common, so I have a strong suspicion that there are certain characteristics that will tend to show up more in the PS community than anywhere else.

In fact, as a solid forum-unit within PS, the people in LIW should have weakly MORE in common than any two random PS-ers. For example, a lot of us seem to be younger than the average PS-er and less wealthy than the average PS-er (probably because we''re younger). In other words, wanting to see and talk about pretty rings can''t be the only thing we have in common! Hearing young and not-wealthy, the first thing I think of is "college/graduate student". I may be projecting a WEE bit here, as a young, non-wealthy grad student who is a LIW, but I can''t help wondering...

To current students: What are you studying / what are your hobbies?
To non-current students: What did you study / what are your hobbies?

I''m a 2nd-year grad student studying economics. Changed my undergrad major from music to biochemistry to chemistry to international business to management to econ! Nice to finally find a comfy niche

. As a grad student, my hobbies are limited to watching random netflix my friends get and looking at PS.

I graduated Aug 2006 with a BA in Economics

I also had two minors in Marketing and Business Administration.

I guess we do have something in common... you are the only other girl I know of with a major in Econ!! I was a scholarship athlete for all 4 years, and successfully changed my major 6 times!! :)

i am a currently in my 3rd year of undergrad and im getting my degree in psychology with a minor in sociology

i have a whole year left but its all good not going rush through it becasue i want to be able to learn all that i am correctly and not stress out too much....but when i do graduate i want to start working as a case worker than after about a year go get my masters then after that take another year off and get my PhD....

i do want to eventually have DR. in front of my name, i want to one day be a family and marrige counsler...have my own office and everything...

all in due time!

but for now im a happy 3rd year looking forward to my senior year!!!

...and a hapy patient LIW!

I just had to chime in that I also have a Bachelors in Economics, what are the chances? My minor was in psych though.

I am a 4th year undergrad majoring in Business Management with a minor in Accounting. I graduate in May 2008. From then it''s on to 15 months of grad school to get my Masters in accounting. My FF graduated in Dec 2006 with a bachelors in communication studies ( he graduated a semester early).

My hobbies... baking, gardening, volunteering for animal rescues, sewing.. a real martha stewart type. LOL Though you would never guess it if you ever met me.

I am a very impatient anxious LIW... 7 years seems like an eternity.

Fun thread!

I graduated in May with a bachelor''s in microbiology and a minor in biochemistry.

Hoping to someday get my PhD in microbiology or molecular biology. :-) Yay science!

Great work gals! I love to see ambitions among the LIW''s for letters other than Mrs.

Hey Emilina, that''s a great ambition and I bet you would be a warm and wonderful counselor! But when you say, "then after that take another year off and get my PhD..." you mean then take a year off AFTER WHICH you''ll start your Ph.D.? Getting a Ph.D. in the United States takes on the average about 5 or 6 years of pretty much full time work. Not 1 year. It''s a major undertaking. It can be done a little faster if you''re willing to work 12 hours a day/ 7 days a week! It''s a wonderful achievement, but you should be prepared to seriously devote yourself for quite some time if you want to go that way.

Hurray for all of you!

Great thread!

I will graduate with a double major in Business Administration and Marketing (hopefully in spring 09). Then I would like to pursue my masters in Environmental Policies or Management. (a tree hugger at heart
1.gif
) I also have 2 associate degrees.. guess the darn school bug has hit us all!

My hobbies are snowboarding, riding my motorcycle, walking our doggies, hiking with my hunny, being out doors i guess in general!

I have 2 degrees, one in Supervisory Management and one in Marketing.
I was commencement speaker and graduated top of my class...ahh...

I will eventually be going back for my Masters in Marketing.

But I have a crazy life, but I love it and my education is really important to me.

I was always involved in clubs and student government when I was in college and sometimes I really miss it!!

Well, no econ. in my background... former English major/creative writing minor here. Working on an MLIS (Masters of Library and Information Science), will probably graduate in May of 2009 (I''m done with 15 of 36 credits), and someday hope to be a friendly public librarian
4.gif
, possibly specializing in Young Adult Services. I''m a life-long learner type, so libraries are great places to be! I do have an interest in finances, though, and am considering taking an accounting class next summer to bolster my resumé (in case I become an administrator at a library instead of the person who helps you find that book to read).

As for hobbies, obviously reading--I''m a member of JASNA (the Jane Austen Society of North America) and also like nonfiction of a quirky nature. I like movies, mysteries, playing Wii Sports, knitting somewhat badly (which is why my e-ring/w-ring CANNOT have pavé or prong settings or be eternity style
40.gif
), blogging, classical music (I took voice lessons for 5 years and sing opera) and a bunch of other things.

This is a fun thread!

Bachelors in psych and Masters in Marriage and family therapy. Currently working as a substance abuse prevention counselor in a middle and high school.
hobbies: PS! movies, internet shopping, reading celebrity gossip mags (haha, nothing too deep!)

Independent Gal- i know it takes that long...i meant to say i will take a year break before i start for my PhD...i like to have small break before i jump back....sorry i wasnt clear about that...

Emilina22 - I also want to do family/marriage counselling!

I don''t want a PhD though just a Master''s. I think it is a little different in Canada too. I will be graduating with a BaSc in family and community social services

great observation, justa. I agree wholeheartedly.

I'm just barely out of LIW status, and I find that I have a lot in common with the LIW's in the thread. Probably, as you say, the younger folks who have not as much cash, who love to oogle, etc. And in fact, I have enough in common with other PSers that I recently found out that an old high school friend of mine posts on here as a LIW!! It actually served as a sort of starting ground to our reconnection as future buds.

It's a beautiful thing.

ETA: and I almost forgot to answer your questions...

I graduated six years ago from college but I majored in Graphic Design, and I'm currently an Art Director.
I don't have a ton of hobbies, more like obsessions. Currently it's diamonds and PS (!!). But I love photography and I read a lot. I'm a self-admitted fashion whore who used to make clothing for her barbie dolls (needle and thread) and adore fashion magazines. I secretly want to work for one someday, even if it's just doing GD. And I'm a big dork for my siamese cat and hope to get a boxer with my DF when we buy our house.

thanks for letting me babble!

Cool, Emilina ! Go for it!

OK, degrees first:
*Graduated 2001 with my undergraduate law degree (LL.B.)
*Got my masters law degree in 2002 (LL.M.)
*Got my barrister-at-law degree last year (BL) (this one''s my practitioner''s degree, the others are academic)
*Will get my PhD next year, all going well (I started it in September 2004)

Much more interesting, hobbies:
*Knitting knitting knitting knitting knitting (I''m a bit obsessed!)
*Music (piano, flute, a bit of violin when I was younger but not any more)
*Dancing (very very amateur swing dancing, I only took this one up recently)
*Horse riding (when I can afford it, it''s very pricey
7.gif
)
*And of course, Pricescope!!!
9.gif

Ooh, I''ll play! I''m a first-year law student. I took a couple years off between college and law school, so I''m in my mid-20s now, but still relatively young and definitely not wealthy
2.gif

Like amy_dub, I''m sort of Martha-Stewarty, I love being in the kitchen and decorating. And like rubybeth and Delster, I''m a knitter -- which definitely limits e-ring styles, especially since I''m the type who looses any piece of expensive jewelry the second I take it off. Unlike some (most?) of you, I''m not officially an LIW because I''m not all that impatient for an engagement yet, but there''s so much on this forum that I identify with, so it''s a nice place to hang out. And when I AM ready for BF to pop the question, I''ll be armed with terrific knowledge!

Apologies for the threadjack here but Octavia have you seen my knitting thread over in Hangout? I think it might be due a reinvigoration...
31.gif

P.S. I'm not on the LIW list either - no proposal expected here until that dratted PhD is done so I don't consider myself 'officially' waiting...
1.gif

Justageek--- thank you for starting this thread!!

I cannot tell you girls how much I LOVE the thread!!!

It is so nice to see all you girls here, that aren''t just sitting around waiting for a proposal. We are all extremely educated women that do more than "oogle" over rings... even tough it''s extremely fun!!

I have contemplated going back to school, but only becuase I believe I could make attending class a new career. I love learning new things and taking the interesting classes.

I worked for Fidelity as a Financial Advisor in Dallas after graduating, but C(the FF) is in the oil business in S. Houston, so I made the move in May. I worked for a couture bridal designer for about 4 months and have now been decorating the apartment my FF and I live in. Luckily he has the amazing income and total job security since it''s his Father''s business and "C" will be taking over.
"I know all the hybrid lovers on PS are going to despise me now!! Sorry :)"

I noticed that a few of you girls are very interested in family counseling and social services. My heart is with you all. I have recently interviewed as a career counselor for the local womens'' shelter. I love being there, and thought why not make a career out of it!!

Anyway, I just wanted to say hi and let all of you know that you are inspirations to me. Good luck with all of your classes(probably some finals coming up?!?!). I would love for all of us to keep in touch!!
36.gif

um... I think I''m going overbored with the anti-lurking, but I had something I wanted to say to everyone who posted
9.gif
. Seconding meresal, good luck on finals!! Long post below...

meresal: Congratulations!! and wow. you''re a designing financial advisor? don''t see too many of those
36.gif
. I was also a student athlete
9.gif
-- right up ''til eighth grade... much respect for balancing that with studies!

emelina: the average time to get a BA/BS in the US is still much higher than 4 years! You''re absolutely right -- you shouldn''t rush through your undergrad because, believe me, when you get to grad school, you''ll be tested on it. I''m also not quite sure how psychology graduate programs work, but many of the graduate programs in economics neither require work experience nor a Master''s degree. Just something to check up on if your end goal is the Ph.D...

goodfun: =-o! haha my specialty within Economics is "Psychology and Economics" ^_^

amy_dub: All throughout middle school, I used to just sit in a corner and knit/sew/crochet during recess
20.gif
. Crafts are so relaxing!

SeeShell: One more time -- YAY SCIENCE!

Independent Gal: Everyone I know in my program is currently working 14 hrs a day, 7 hours a week, except major holidays. Average graduating time in my program is 5-6 years
38.gif

You know how that Simpsons episode goes? Bart starts making fun of a graduate student: oh look at me I''m 30 years old and made $800 last year. And Marge replies, "Don''t make fun of him, Bart. He just made a bad life choice."
41.gif

Beanie: Who doesn''t just get the urge to hug a tree? I certainly do! (this might also explain why I''m at Berkeley)

Alexis: Congratulations!
36.gif

rubybeth: I love libraries. and librarians! There was a recent article in the NY Times actually about how library and information science is becoming more popular as a major. I totally identify with your dream of wanting to be surrounded by an awesome book collection, helping people explore other worlds :-)

DMBsGirl: Love your bunny!

smiles: Sounds like an awesome plan. Congratulations on your upcoming graduation!

tberube: =-o boxers are so adorable!!! such mean reps for a breed that can be so snuggly.

delster: piano, flute, and violin?!? are you Korean too?!? (jk... kind of. I''m Korean-American, and I can tell you firsthand that there''s a bit of an obsession with piano, flute, and violin.) I''m sorry to hear you don''t play violin anymore -- it''s definitely hard to find time to play as you get older...

Octavia: Congrats on law school! Sounds like you''re having fun :-).

Thanks for responding, everyone! I had this fear that I would come out of lurkdom by starting a topic, and absolutely no one would post back. Like the dream where you''re giving a speech and then you realize you''re naked? Something like that. Have a nice weekend!!

i doubt anyone else on here has this major...you ready? cinema studies!! i studied films - history and symbolism mostly, and graduated a year ago. i almost minored in dance also. it was an awesome major, but now i work at a logistics company as a quality assurance specialist. go figure...
3.gif

as for hobbies, i still LOVE to dance. i also love watching movies, so does my FF (he actually has seen more than me!!!). i''m a huge shopper, but mostly i just like hangin'' out! nice to meet you all!

I graduate in 3 WEEKS!!!!!
With my bachelor of science in Graphic Communications (emphasis on multimedia)
in short...i make web pages, edit music and video, and create 3d animations and different kinds of graphics!

I am a 6th year Pharm.D. student and will be graduating in April! FF is also a 6th yr Pharm.D. student and will be graduating in April as well. We both have jobs lined up in the DC/Baltimore area and are so excited to start our lives together in April! (Although I will be living with him near school starting in March! :) ).

My hobbies include shopping, reading, knitting, and running...oh and of course obsessing over e-rings and pricesope!!!

I wanna play!. I''m in my third year for my undergrad degree. I''m working my way towards a B.A. in Psychology with a minor in Animal and Veterinary Sciences. My hobbies are watching tv with my roomies, anything craft oriented, and sushi and martinis with my friends! YAY this thread is fun.
36.gif

how fun!

I got my undergrad in Speech language pathology and elementary education as my second major. i''m currently in my first year of grad school for speech path with a year and a half left to go. i want to get my ph.d in either neuroscience/development or autism, but i still have a while to think about that! FF is a computer engineer.

as for hobbies that i USED to have time for, i love sewing, reading, snowboarding, hiking (pretty much anything outside) and baking. unfortunately grad school has sucked up my life and i don''t really have the time, money or energy for much of that anymmore my FF is really into nerdy boardgames....so i fall victim to those too by default.

Yay! I want to play!

I'm currently in my last year of undergrad, Anthropology/English double major with a concentration in Spanish. I am currently working on my thesis on bachelorette parties and a paper on tattoos that I will be presenting at an anthropological convention next semester. I plan on working for a few years and saving money so I can get my Masters in either Marketing or Business.

I also want to learn French at some point so that I can move to Paris for a few years (not sure when, but it's on my list of places to live) and Italian so I can maybe live in Florence. I'm almost fluent in Spanish and did my internship this summer in Central America. I would love to do something that involves languages and cultural communication and actually use what I'm studying!

As far as hobbies, I love learning languages. I work at Build-A-Bear Workshop and adore it (what could be more fun and relaxing while I work on my thesis?). I live for my 2x a week gym date with one of my good friends, and I love to bake. I'm also a full blown Christmasaholic and am currently testing gingerbread recipes with my gym buddy and figuring out how to decorate a small apartment on a smaller budget.

ETA: (Because my post wasn't long enough!) I love board games, especially Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit, and Cranium.

Eeek, I forgot one! I''m also going to get my motorcycle license soon and I want to get my very own Harley in the next 2-ish years.

Yay! Another Pharm.D. student! I''m in the 2nd year of a three year Pharm.D. program. I can''t wait to finish! It''s awesome your FF is also going into pharmacy, I''ve wondered what that would be like with all the pharmacy talk all the time, haha. Our three year program really gets us working hard all.of.the.time.

My hobbies when I''m not stressing about school are reading, shopping, browing PS and the Purse Forum, working out when I''m not being a lazy bum, watching old movies, having a cozy evening at home and generally acting like an old woman.

It''s nice to see so many students/recent students around on PS. I also got the feeling I was younger (and less wealthy!) than a lot of the PSers.
