I seriously never get upset about this stuff but based on what we were all talking about the other day I thought I would share. For starters today is my 30th birthday and I happened to also get my monthly present. Really! I''m so pissed. The thing is that if I continue to be regular I will also get it on my wedding day.

I know it isn''t the end of the world but I get extreamly bloated and my cramps are rediculous. I can''t be on BC for medical reasons so there are not a lot of options other than suffer. I''m taking midol but it does not help. I still keal over with cramps half of the time. Its terrible but that part only lasts the first two days.
My amazing fiance suprised me with a trip (won''t find out where to till tomorrow) and I have to be in a bathing suit all weekend. This is so awesome.

Ok, vent over.

Would taking pills be an option? How do other people deal with it? My *gift* went away a few days before the wedding, so I was okay for the honeymoon, but you can imagine how cranky I was the week before the wedding! I had zits like no other that week...

I take calcium suppplements - it''s supposed to help with cramps (and PMS mood swings!!). I know others who cannot take the pill. I''m so sorry you are sad

I take these everyday and swear it really does help.

Maybe try the calcium/magnesium supplements. It can''t hurt.... :)

Thanks for understanding ladies. Yeah, my skin is an issue right now too. It''s like my body is freaking out to enter the 30''s and hello breaking out.

Anyway, I am going to take the suggestion for the calcium/mag supplements. I have some I''m just never good at taking them unless I really have a reason and if it helps the cramps then that is all the reason I need.

Thanks!

Oh EM, I'm sorry you're feeling so crappy (((hugs))) My sister used to suffer from very painful cramps that often left her vomiting or near vomiting. She used to miss school during the first few days of her period. Our family doctor prescribed Anaprox, a muscle relaxant, which she took for a couple years with much success. Like you, my sister wasn't on BC either and she found this was the best option for her. Of course, if you're against traditional medicines, there are naturopathic options. Can you talk to your family doctor about this? I hope you still enjoy your trip this weekend!

ETA: I almost forgot

All the best on this terrific day! I hope you have a good one despite your challenges.

I''m sorry about your "present" ... Totally sucks. I feel ya on that one. I have a similar problem. Since you can''t "make" it go away via bc, maybe you can try to alleviate the pain ... What I have found to significantly help me is to start taking Extra Strength Advil Liquigels - 400 mg (I can only get it in Canada - it may be prescription strength in the US) a couple of days before it is scheduled to come. My philosophy is to knock them out with pain meds. Midol does nothing for me either. Nothing.

I take the Advils religiously and by the time they "hit" ... it is mere discomfort as opposed to sitting in a dark corner cringing from pain and rocking back and forth cursing your uterus. I continue throughout my visitor''s stay and it really makes it all so much easier to deal with. If you don''t want to do Advil or can''t for some reason, maybe you can inquire with your doctor about a prescription strength pain med that will help out more than any over the counter stuff.

Additionally, I''ve heard that Evening Primrose Oil taken as a supplement is really helpful to some women - both with regards to skin and the gifts associated with your "present". Maybe it has something to do with balancing hormones or something - not sure but ... since you have some time, I figure you might want to give it a shot.
Also - if bloating is a problem, stay away from caffeine and salty things in the week or so prior to it coming and drink A LOT of water.
Anything to help, right?

Don''t despair. Your trip, while not what you may have hoped for, will be wonderful as will your amazing wedding and honeymoon. I''m sure that you will still manage to have a fantastic time!!

I hope this helps in some way ...

That's what I do! My mom discovered it in college, when she'd always feel better from cramps/bloating/etc. after eating ice cream or drinking milk. She finally made the connection. That's her one bit of sage knowledge to pass down generations!! lol

I take 5 caplets at the first hint of my period, 5 more 12 hours later, for the first two days (or however long you tend to get cramps). Midol actually does help me too, the one that's targeted specifically for cramps.

I really feel your pain... I used to have debilitating cramps in high school and the beginning of college, before I started listening to my mom's advice re: calcium supplements

Em - my friend, it appears as though we are living in parallel universes. Seriously. Once 30 hit my skin went on the fritz. I was in total denial and was spending $$$$$$$$$$ of money on the "best" skin care products etc ... Nothing really helped. Some were better than others and some made it worse. Anyways, once I woke up and put on my big girl pants and admitted that I was having problem skin, I made an appt with a dermatologist and my skin has, for the most part, been amazing.

Give yourself a present for your bday - Get a dermatologist and get them to hook you up with whatever will work for your specific skin issues, in addition, to getting some good pain meds.

EM1 I TOTALLY get where you coming from!! I could have written your post!

Is there anyway you can call your doc and have him/her call in a script for you. My doc perscribed 500mg motrin and it does wonders! I used to be doubled over in pain for a day and a half every month...sometimes so bad that it made me puke...the motrin is the ONLY thing that helps me...Midol was a joke...never did anything! AND...if you start taking it a day or two before you start your period it shortens the time you'll be on for...always a plus!

Also I would suggest taking vitamin C too. A couple years ago an old doc of mine (who has since retired) said that if I take 3000mgs of C that it would also lessen the bleeding...It seems like a lot but really you can get the 1000mg pills and it's not so bad...That also has helped a lot.

I'm not a doctor but this has helped me in the past....and if I'm really desparate (ie..have something special coming up) then I'll take like 4000mg of the C and I'll only bleed for like 2 1/2 - 3 days. My normal cycle is 4 w/o the C.

Sorry your feeling crappy ((HUGS))...Hope this helps!!

EM1 - I have every issue you can think of, from polycistic ovaries to endometriosis, so I understand your pain. My doctor in recommended for me to take a natural vitamin/supplement that you can buy at Target or Walmart called St. John''s Warts. I call it my happy pills, because as soon as I take them my pain goes away and my horrible PMS goes along with it. It''s also suppose to boost mood and your metabolism. I know others mentioned calcium which is also good and try drinking milk! I know it''s silly, but all the vitamins help your system! Good luck & I hope you feel better soon!

I''m sorry sweetie. I have no advice, other than try not to let having your period on your wedding day get you down. It might not happen, but if it does, you''ll work through it. AND you''ll still look fly!

Happy 30th Birthday!!! It''s a very important b-day, and will be a very special year for you. After all, it''s the year you get married

feel better and BIG smooshy ((((hugs))))

PS--get yourself a tub of ice cream for later, and don''t feel guilty!

oh and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

im so sorry
7.gif
i know how terrible that is. exercise REALLY helps me when that happens....go to a really intense spin class or something and just force yourself to do it--i have found that it helps with bloating and cramps.

also-if you are worried about the bloating (and can just take something for the pain), don''t worry so much. i know that when i am having a "fat day" or i feel like i look very bloated nobody else notices. i ask my fiance and he thinks im crazy---i think we are the only ones who notice little changes in our bodies. you''re going to look beautiful no matter what (you did post the gorgeous b-pic shots right?).

Happy Birthday EM1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I''m sorry about your *issue*...

I''m sorry.

I''ve so been there..minus the trip..but it made me miss out on b-day fun like going out places because I felt so sickly. But I did want to say happy b-day!!!

You guys are awesome! So much advice. I''ll have to try one thing at a time but at least I have a few more months before the wedding.

As far as the skin is concerned...I used to work for a pharma company selling to derms. Needless to say my derm practice is on speed dial and I''m in there quite frequently. I''m even getting monthly facials but really I think part of me thinks its worse then it is. I litterally had perfect skin growing up so its just depressing for me.

Anyway, I really appreciate it you guys. I''m off to the gym here in a few minutes. And Coco...I do agree with you. As long as I can make it through the back pain then I usually fine my workouts help with the bloating. Usually my tummy hurts to touch it but today its not so bad. I''m taking that blessing and getting to the gym. I plan on relaxing this weekend and getting some sun.

Thanks again for the well wishes!

Happy Birthday!! Sorry to hear about your monthly "present" and hope the gym session would energize you a little!

Oh, EM1, I completely know how you feel! I''m so scared to get my period on my wedding because I get the worst pms and cramps.

I''ve tried every supplement and herbal remedy known to man, but the only thing that has ever helped me (even a little bit) is Advil.....lots and lots of Advil. I take 3 or 4 200mg pills as soon as the pain starts and follow every couple hours with another 2 pills until it''s over.

I really hope you feel better...and HAPPY 30th BIRTHDAY!
9.gif
I''m only a few months behind you (yikes!)

I''m so sorry you''re so upset about this! I know what those cramps are like... I used to get them too the first 2 days of my "gift" every month. Doubled over in pain, throwing up, even passing out from the pain a couple times. I suffered through it for around 2 years and then saw my doctor who prescribed Naproxen for me. It''s basically like Advil except MUCH stronger (advil and midol never did anything for me either) - and if you start taking Naproxen the day before you''re going to get your period, and take it every few hours (based on the dosage prescribed) it REALLY helps. The cramps were still there for me, but they were more just "annoying" than debilitating like they had been before.

I became allergic to aspirin after a while and Naproxen is related to aspirin, so I had to stop taking it and started birth control pills instead (which basically got rid of any pain entirely, but unfortunately, you said that''s not an option for you). If BCP aren''t an option, then I would DEFINITELY recommend talking to your doctor about Naproxen.

For now, just try to have fun on your vacation!!

Just in case you don't know.... 2 Alleve = 1 Anaprox (or close to it according to my Dr.) That's what I always took for cramps pre BC and will most likely be taking again now that I'm off the pill.

Hi EM1,
Sorry you''re hurting!

I used to have the same problem until I discovered 800 mg Ibuprofen. You need a prescription for it (any primary care doctor or OB/GYN can write you one), but it''s pretty cheap (around $10 for 50 pills) and it completely gets rid of the pain for me for at least 4 hours per pill. I bet your OB/GYN would be willing to call in a prescription for you before you leave for your trip.

It completely changed my life -- before I had these pills I couldn''t do anything without moaning and crying for that whole 2-3 day period. Now, I take a pill as soon as I start to feel any pain, and 20 minutes later I feel great. I highly, highly recommend this route!

Good luck to you, feel better, and have a great time on your trip!!

Happy birthday EM1! What a sweet guy to plan whisking you off somewhere great for your birthday.

Can you pick up some instead cups from the drug store? They work great with bathing suits, and are supposed to not cause as much cramping as tampons can.

I totally feel your pain. I also find that calcium/magnesium supplements and *totally* cutting out my caffeine habit has helped. (Caffeine depletes our bodies stores of mg, so ya know...)

If you can''t get a script for 800mg tabs, just take 4 x 200mg tabs, same dose, but available over the counter

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DARLING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, so re: your menstrual cycle...you''re probably feeling more shitty about it now because of your hormones. Truth be told, with all the stress we''re going to have the month of our wedding, I can guarantee you''re going to be late. I have my fingers crossed for you. I know how awful it can be, before I started the pill, I could not leave the house for the 1st two days of my period. I would literally pass out on the street and throw up with the pain and spasms. The only thing that works for me is mefenamic acid, it''s an NSAID just like ibuprofen/advil, but stronger. Ask you physician for a prescription if you''d like to try it. If advil works for you, I would start with 600mg, so 3x200mg every 6 hours (keep in mind, max dose of ibuprofen when self-medicating shouldn''t be more than 2g).

Would it be possible to go on the pill for even two or three months just to get you through the wedding? I can understand not being able to take them long term, but I''d ask my dr. if I could take them for a short period of time if at all possible.

Hope you have a wonderful birthday weekend!

If you have to be in a bathing suit and will be in the ocean, a lake, or a pool I would strongly advise that you avoid the newer Tampax tampons with the extra absorbent string. The string soaks up all of the water and you''re left with a wet crotch for much longer than you would like. I was on a beach vacation when I received my "gift" and couldn''t stand the tampons and had to spend half of an entire day of my vacation searching a tiny Caribbean island for a box of old fashioned Tampax tampons (the ones with the box without the cut-out plastic window. It was a nightmare.

Happy birthday Emerald! I''m sorry you''re having a bad day, but it sounds like your bouncing back fast. As for the skin, well it happens. My fiance is 30 and I think his acne has suddenly taken a turn for the worst. He actually wants to take acutane (AGAIN. He''s taken it in the past).

As for the cramping, etc., I don''t know if you have ever considered the IUD? Mirena makes your period very, very light (for me non-existent) I don''t even HAVE my period. And I don''t have any side effects from the low level of progesterone released, while the BC pills (even lowest doses) made me into a raving lunatic. I can''t rave enough about it. To say it changed my life is an understatement.

In any case, take care of yourself today! I hope your guy takes good care of you!

Awww...I''m so sorry you are feeling rotten.

One other thought to try for the bloating - there are foods that are natural diuretics, like asparagus - could you try to up your intake? I always find that upping my intake of fresh fruits and veggies as much as possible makes me feel better almost no matter what the problem is - might be worth a shot?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!

As for the "monthly gift".....I used to take Pamprin and it really worked for me. The only thing is it made me drowsy, but that helped me sleep as the pain was SO bad during my period. Also, tea is a natural diuretic and it helped relieve some of the bloating. I prefer iced tea, but hot tea is also very soothing.
