When we first got engaged, I had FI attempt to do a business trade with a few of the big wedding vendors as our budget, as lots of you know by now, is like $10k for 100 people in Rhode Island. It''s not the easiest thing to balance getting it for "free" with quality and something that fits your vision lol. Anyhow, we ended up confirming a trade with a limo driver, a DJ, and a DOC. Great! (Actually, we had a florist at first, too, but he ended up closing down a couple months later

Well, limo guy and DJ are fantastic thus far but DOC has been MIA for, no exaggeration, 8 months!!! She would do this thing where she emails me and asks when I''m available the following month.......then I''d respond with my availability.......and then she would NEVER respond to that........until a few weeks later, she''d do it again....and the cycle continued that way.

I was fed up so I asked my FI how much the trade show banner was going to cost us to make in exchange for her services and I worked from there looking to replace her. I went on the Knot, found a BUNCH of raves about this one lady, called her up and had an appointment, no lie, 2 days later (this past Monday). She was SOOOOOOOOOO fantastic. She met me at our ceremony spot and we basically had my entire ceremony designed in an hour. She''s going to make lemonade and bring some linen so that we can serve lemonade and ice water to my guests (orignially, I was just going to have bottled water on ice for them). She will even set up my ceremony chairs and make my petal aisle (saves us $150 for set up fee).

This is where she gets tremendously MORE wonderful........

*she offered to address my invitations that very night in her trained handwriting (!!!) and then emboss our return address, get them stamped, and send them out the next day! Too bad my embosser didn''t come until yesterday and I had already labled them

OH well, I still had her emboss, get them stamped and send them out for me. I had to work this morning early so that was a load off :)
*She''s lending me one of those fantastic slilver plateau cake stands that I"ve been oggling that cost $70 bux
*She''s lending me a sliver tray for our gift cards
*She''s doing a bathroom ammenity basket for FREE because she has tons of leftover, unused stuff from all the weddings she''s done
*She''s offered us her home to get ready in on the wedding day (this could save us $150 if we do it as we had to pay our site for that extra time)
*She can order flowers for me wholesale!!!

Okay, plus she''s going to do all the other DOC stuff and run my rehearsal with her assistant!!!!

I think in a matter of 2 days she''s saved me $400! If any of you RI brides want a R.A.V.E., you let me know and I''ll pass her info along!!! (Get her before your invites are done so you can use that service she provides as well!!).

Apparently, she''s more like a DOC on crack

as I didn''t find ANY other DOC willing to do the things she''s already done for me in 2 days. The fact that she handles the actual design of my ceremony and reception, will meet with me THREE times before the actual wedding, and does things like set up ceremony chairs makes her more like DOC+.

I just had to rave about this! I mean, she''s gonna serve lemonade to my guests at my ceremony. I

her right now :)

So Happy, I''m glad things worked out but I have a question. It was a little hard to understand your post ONLY because I''m not sure what a DOC is. I''m assuming "_____________ of ceremony." It sounds like she''s offering a ton of great things for your ceremony. ALso, can you elaborate on the trading you had your FI do? What do you mean by that?

"Day of" coordination??

oh yeah, that makes more sense.

Hehe just a guess. Even my educated guesses don't usually make sense...woohooo!!! I'll take weddings for $1000, Alex

No worries! Yes, DOC = Day of Coordinator. And my fiance owns a large-format printing shop in RI so his skill comes in handy ALOT. He does a sign or a trade show banner or vehicle graphics for them and they do xyz for us :) It doesn't work out all the time, hence we had to pay in full for many other vendors, but any little bit helps :)

Our DOC will definitely be running the ceremony and then also the reception, but right now the ceremony stuff is all we've talked about thus far in our first (3 hour!!!) appointment :)

Oh, and I meant to add that my budget is 10K not including honeymoon. One of these days I want to make a list of all expenditures to see how we did it for this amount.

So Happy,
I''m a little late here but congrats on a great find! She sounds wonderful!! I''ve decided recently that it''s worth paying a bit extra (in your case, no extra cost included which is even better) to be a bit more stress free. Your DOC sounds very together and is offering so many great amenities.

What did you decide to do on the veil?

Thank you, Dixie!!! So, you are considering one as well? I am so excited for you! You will LOVE it (of course, as long as he/she is fantastic....my advice is to check the Knot and call only those that are highly recommended but also have the word "reasonably priced" in that recommendation lol).

As you know, I flip flop on decisions ALL the time. So even tho my last post on that thread said I was going to get a new one, I have since thought about it and may actually keep this one. I am trying to find a replacement thru veilsbylana tho, as she seems willing to let me exchange it. I look in her ebay store all the time in case a fingertip length one pops up that I''d like. Basically, I''m working that Symphony veil out of my system slowly and if I get another veil it will be in exchange for the one I have so costs will be minimal :)

No, no DOC for me. In fact, I never even heard of them until on PS and until reading your post, had no idea what a DOC was. But I''m happy for you b/c yours sounds great. I was actually referring to other things that I''ve recently changed my mind about.. like the flowers! But I won''t hijack this thread, maybe I''ll start one later.
Right now, gotta go work on the invites!
I think it''s a great idea to exchange the veil you have, if you find a better one you like.

Hey So_Happy! Glad to hear that the DOC is working out so fabulously for you!

If you don''t mind me asking, how much does she charge if I don''t have any useful connections to barter into the deal?

We have a sort-of-DOC from our caterer...so not sure what/how much another person would add?

Basil~ For just day-of coordination, I''ve seen anywhere from $600-$1200, but that''s just because I really only looked at a few before I found the one I love. You can go on the RI Knot board and you''ll see a few names rise to the top as the "best" :) My DOC seems to be the only one that does more than just Day-Of stuff, tho.
