A transitional cut that is
I ended up with some jewelry money burning a hole in my paypal account. So, after some pondering- wicked cool setting? single diamond? bracelet?- I ended up going, you guessed it, diamond. I already have a RHR so it''s not like I neeeeded a new one. But, I just couldn''t make myself get a setting that would have cost more than the 2 ct transitional cut (in it''s original platinum setting) I was eyeballing. It just seemed wrong, despite how much I do want to reset my e-ring.
Got it in the mail today. I knew it had a big table- transitional cut, after all- and so I was wondering if it wouldn''t be very fiery. Actually, though the table is GINORMOUS (definitely over 60%) it is remarkably fiery. The pattern is really pretty- very checkerboardy. It reflects a LOT of white light, and though it isn''t *quite* as fiery as my OECs, it''s still a fireball. The table is hard to get used to- it''s glare-y, and it gets grubby quick.
It was sold as an I color, VS something clarity. I knew from the start there was no WAY it was an I color, the pics showed a lot more color than that. It is probably somewhere between an M and an N, which is fine, and about what I''d expected. I haven''t found any inclusions with my loupe, but I can''t seem to fully de-lint it either.
I got it from Dover Jewelry on eBay, and they kindly gave me a return period to decide, which was totally necessary.
It has a faceted girdle, interestingly enough. Never seen one on an old cut before- it makes me think it was repolished at some point. It is still very, very thin in a few places.
The setting''s pretty- I like the little e/w marquis cuts, and the fishtail setting for the center stone is a style I like a lot.
The price was a crazy good deal. I can''t resist those!
Then, I just lucked into an actual antique platinum filigree setting for my 3 1/2 ct OEC. It''s pretty cool. It isn''t like my absolute DREAM setting, but honestly, I like it sooooo much more than the current one, and I really really wanted to find a real antique setting for it, but didn''t ever expect to since there aren''t that many for stones that size. Also it''s bezel set, which is ideal for my OEC and it''s super thin girdle. I''m sure it''ll be a pain to swap stones, being a bezel, but I know a good bench guy. It has about 1 carat in single cut melee. It was also super, super cheap- a tiny fraction of what a Van Craeynest would be, or even a Greenlake setting.
Also got 2 half-carat-each OECs that match perfectly in size and color at work, rather randomly. They were irresistably cheap ($200 each) and will be earrings. They''re about J and SIish clarity. One''s a bit better cut, but they''ll be separated from each other by my huge head, so I don''t care too much.
(The hands in the hand shots are not mine, obviously. The ring is reallllllly loose on me- it''s currently a 6 1/2 and it falls off. I will probably have it taken down to a 5.)
