I think wedding planning makes me insane... (or is it vain?!) and super self conscious about my skin and body overall... last week I spent $50 getting my eyebrows ''shaped'' and on my first bikini wax (owww!)

Let me know how it works! Sounds interesting!

I spend $30 every three weeks to get my eyebrows shaped

Have you tired the brazilian wax? Oh my lord. I felt like she ripped out my spleen in the midst of the waxing. Has anyone ever been threaded? It hurts like the dickens!!

I am getting laser hair removal and that''s no walk in the park either....owww....ironically the under arms hurts MORE than the bikini area.

Oh lord, just thinking of a brazilian makes me tremble LOL. I would NEVER want to go through that!

I have never had my eyebrows threaded, but I''ve heard a lot of people say how wonderful it is. I guess you would disagree with that

Me, I''m content with having someone pluck my eyebrows. Waxing left me with some scars

I''m so glad to hear others talking about the vanity issue! I''ve been getting microderm abrasion every month,
had my eyebrows waxed for the first time, and just started using proactive for my acne. I really like it so far!

Rascal - I''m worried that it will be a slippery slope and now I''ve got my eyebrows all nice and even, I''ll be forking over that $30 every month or so.... and then it will be facials.. .and then... who knows?!!

I''ve never tried the brazilian. I am *kinda* thinking of it for the wedding, to surprise FI but I''m not sure I can do it... the bikini was bad enough... we''ll see how brave I feel in a few weeks! In fact, this whole bikini thing was to see how bad it was, in case I DO decide I want to try the brazilian... hm.. is this TMI?!!

The funny part was the waxing lady said that some girls come in asking for the brazilian and never got waxed down there before, and so she always does it evenly on both sides first in case they want to stop after the bikini part...

She was pretty good though, and worked pretty fast, but still, owie!

Mario Badescu products. That drying lotion worked wonders on my skin when i was still having problems.
Now I''m into Lush products, yum!

tybee my best friend swears by proactiv, although I''ve never tried it! I really don''t feel like I have true acne, just a pimple here and there, but I''m always paranoid I''ll have a huge one right on my nose or something for my wedding!!!

Flopkins,

I don''t have really bad acne either, I do get an occational zit from time to time, especially around my period.
The proactive has really helped me not have any-- oh, that''s a lie, I have one now! But I have fewer than I used to.

I agree it''s a slippery slope. The facials/microderm are really awesome. Who have I become? I used to be such a tom-boy!
I even had my first pedicure!

You know what has always freaked me out? Every time I get a bikini wax, even the brazilian one, she always puts her hand on the newly waxed spot, and it totally feels better. What is that? And threading works for little tiny hairs, but they can hurt!!! The brazilian wax makes my jaw clench. I mean, TMI, but WTH? There are hairs there?!?!

there is this spa in the valley (I think its called blue), that has a wax called "The Tiffany Box" - they wax you down to a small square piece that they then dye the tiffany blue color.

Some of Mario Badescu stuff is great! I get facials there and always end up buying tons of products. The drying lotion really works, some other stuff, I''m not so sure.

Threaded? I''m afraid to ask. I have an awful picture in my head.

!!! Only in LA....

(I am an LA native, so I feel safe saying that!)

Why blue though... I don''t know. If I was going to go that far I would dye it a different color, something more exciting... like RED!!!!

Because they couldn''t call it the Tiffany Box if it were red! Ha! OMG, I feel like such a dirty girl!

On the subject of Brazilian waxing, the first time I ever got waxed was a Brazilian. It could have been worse, I suppose. But the upper hair was much more painful than the lower hair, ironically. You''d think it would be the other way around.

Flopkins--if you really like the eyebrow waxing after a while, do it yourself. I was always a plucker, in an obsessive-compulsive way, but I started waxing about 6 weeks ago and I like it. Kinda messy the first time and also the first time I had some irritated skin around the brows for a few days but after that every time has been successful. I do my lip too. (This is all for the wedding, BTW...vanity!!!!) I want to do my underarms for the wedding but my friend says it''s more painful than a Brazilian wax AND more painful than threading. I actually don''t mind the pain of eyebrow and lip waxing when I do it myself.

EBree--threading is the Indian method of removing hair by somehow twisting two threads around the hair and pulling out. Apparently these women do it like at lightning speed but supposedly it hurts way worse than waxing.

Ooh, I love this topic because I'm big on hair removal! I get the brazilian. I'm addicted to it, actually! Once you do it and get over the pain it's hard to go back to doing it any other way "down there"! I think people psych themselves out too much about the pain. Yes, it hurts! I mean, it's like the most sensitive part of your body, but I totally think it's worth the pain so I try not to think about it. Also, if you go every 4 weeks or so, the hair isn't as long and hurts less. My big question is who would want to do that job?! I always chat with my person because I've been going to her for years but it's still pretty awkward!

For facial stuff, I do the threading. THAT hurts. But supposedly, it's like a massage for your face and is better than waxing because it doesn't pull or burn your skin, it just manipulates the hairs out. I get upper lip and eyebrows done that way. Eyebrows don't really bother me but the lip does. Tears actually roll down my face during that but again, I think it's worth the pain because it's much more precise than waxing.

Just my 2 cents!

Oh no,
I hate hearing that arm pits hurt worse than Brazilians. I was really thinking about doing mine, but now I''m scared!
Do the Brazilians get better after a while? Or do they continue to hurt like Heck?

Yep, only in L.A! I know of a place in the valley that does the same thing (and no, not by personal experience!) Get this, it''s called "pink cheeks"!

yes be careful with their toners, some are WAY too strong and need to be diluted, or you will end up with a face full of burned peeling skin... but i used their products for years until I got hooked on blisslabs.

''the tiffany box'' - how funny. the hairstylist i used to go to once told me that he was going to be hiring an esthetician who specialized in styling the ''nether regions''... he was so excited about it & kept telling me that she could do ''so many fun things'' to my area down there - fun colors and such.
23.gif
i just laughed because it was too funny... but i told him that i thought he was way ahead of the trend curve in our part of the country - that was in Tulsa (Oklahoma) about 5 years ago... i don''t think most Okies were ready for that - probably still not...

For anyone considering waxing, be REALLY careful if you are using some of the acne topicals: Retin A, Differen etc. They help acne by sloughing off the top layers of your skin faster. I am on DIFFERIN and I found out the hard way that waxing my eyebrows is not a good idea. The wax litterally pulled off the top layers of my skin and I was red and bleeding. I''ve had it done by a few different people over the years thinking that maybe I just didn''t find the person with skill. Finally the last person I went to asked if I was on RETIN A or DIFFERIN and when I told her I was she said she would not wax my eyebrows...only tweezing. Sure wish I would have known that before.

Anyway, I wanted to spare anyone the red, bleeding then scabbing that I endured.

Island Dreams--just curious: did you have the same experience with facials? I use retinol, a milder version of Retin A I believe, and when I had my first facial in December, my face felt like it was on fire. The esthetician also waxed my brows and it was red and "chapped" (not exactly bleeding) above and below my brow. My girlfriends told me it all hurt so much b/c of the retinol that I use. Like you, wish I would have know that earlier--hello, why don''t these people ASK?!

Tybee--everyone says that any waxed area hurts less as you do it more (Curlygirl''s reasoning is what I''ve always heard). The bad thing about the pits is that you have to grow the hair long enough for the wax to adhere to it. I could figure how to deal with the pain if I could just get over the embarrassment of not shaving it for two weeks! Can you see me at the gym in my tank top, doing arm and shoulder moves?

I LOVE Mario Badescu products. I go every 4-6 weeks for facials there and I started using his products religously the past 6 week. My skin has never been better. I''ve been using the Glycolic Cleanser every few days, and a gentler cleanser every night and morning, plus Aloe toner and then oil free moisturizer. I also do a mask every 2-3 days. My skin hasn''t been breaking out like it used to along my hair line, thank goodness. I love his stuff.

Really? I always thought it would be the other way around! I've gotten laser hair removal under the arms and it wasn't TOO bad. But I might have high tolerance for pain since I do all my waxing myself. It's totally worth it though not having to shave or wax all the time! I might try the bikini area too then, but it costs 3x the price of under arms. It'll solve the problem of ingrown hair too.

If you do decide to have the brazilian, don''t try it for the first time right before the wedding. Your skin might get irritated. You don''t want to be uncomfortable for your wedding.

Initially arm pit waxing hurts a lot but after a while it doesn''t hurt much. Seems like the hair becomes easier to pull out.
To me, brazilians hurt more and I don''t feel like it''s gotten much better over time. I think the biggest problem is "maintenance".

I know! I would have guessed that too. If you didn''t find your under arms painful you are good to go. I guess I am a baby. I never waxed though. The nurse said the upper lip is the most painful, under arms is number two. Where I go, my bikini area was only 2x (maybe not even that much) more. And that is for a "full" bikini which means I can get as much or little taken off that I want. They have a cheaper package but I think it only goes an inch in on both sides.

My mom used to make a home made sugar ball (like they did when she was a kid in "the old country" ). She would spread it on my leg and pull, spread, pull, spread, pull...no mess at all. That was so much nicer than using wax...but unless you make it perfectly so it comes out soft it doesn''t work and I could never make it work by myself. So then I waxed practically everything (minus the Brazilian and face) for about 2 years. It definitely doesn''t hurt as much after you keep doing it (I didn''t think the underarms were so bad). My problem with that was getting serious ingrown hairs, not fun or pretty at all.

So, I am a firm believer in electrolysis...been doing it for a long time. You have to be seriously patient but in the end it is totally permanent. Depending on the area, I also use a topical anestesia so it doesn''t hurt. I have no hair in my underarms or lower legs, and it is amazing! Tank tops, sleeveless dresses are my fav and I have no worries at all. My eyebrows are done, upper lip, lower legs, even toes. Believe it or not, it''s the toes that hurt the absolute most.

For those of you waxing your eyebrows, I would definitely say that unless you like changing the shape of your eyebrows regularly, get the electrolysis done and make it forever. The cost to do the area seems comparable to waxing.
