I like this stone, but I don't like the window.

two videos, the first shows it under natural light and artificial light, the other with pink spinels:
This is a larger chrysoberyl that I've had my eye on for a while. I didn't know it had a window til I asked for videos. In addition, the larger inclusion breaches the crown surface.
Probably too many deal breakers... Honest thoughts? Thanks.

Very nice colour and other than the window, the step cut is pleasing to the eye. I don't know if these will be deal breakers for me as it will depend on the price. What is the ct weight and mm size of the chrysoberyl? I do see an inclusion or some sort of feather to the side. How deep does it go?

Thanks for your thoughts. It is 8.5ct. Its 12.7x11.3x6.1mm. GRS called it vivid yellow-green.
I think the inclusion is a feather. It breaches the crown's surface. I will ask how deep it goes and to confirm the type of inclusion.
Price feels on the high side, but not sure how much a chryso of this color/size should go for. It is over 5k. I'm asking for a discount, will post exact price when I know. But I expect it to be 5k or slightly over 5k.

Chrysoberyls are one of my favorite gemstones. I could be wrong but it looks more like a tilt window and for that stone it would not bother me very much. But the inclusion would make it a deal breaker for me unless an expert gemstone deemed it safe for setting and wearing. I would be concerned that one hard knock of the ring might chip that whole corner off or it would break during setting. If you can be assured that this is unlikely it might be worth the money given the rarity of such a large, pretty Chrysoberyl.

I see it more as a regular straight on window, not a tilt window. That’s very large for a chrysoberyl, and they tend to go up in price at the 5 carat mark. I like the luster and I like the step cut. However, it is not an inexpensive stone, and if you have a higher budget, you should be able to get something you really love and not questioning.

Thank you both for posting.
Yep, the vendor confirmed it is a full on window, not a tilt window.
They lowered the price to 5.2k.

They will get back to me tomorrow regarding specific details about the inclusion. The stone is from a well known jewellery house and gemstone dealer. They said the inclusion would not pose a structural issue during setting and does not run deep. The idea of destroying the stone with an accidental knock is scary. I was planning on a gypsy setting (gent's ring), which may protect the pavilion and girgle, but not the crown I assume.

I tend to agree with TL's sentiment about getting something that I have no doubts about. In fact, I want a stone that will make me never want another chrysoberyl again because it scratches all the itches chrysoberyl provides (inflicts?). That is my philosophy when buying gems.

I've been looking for a larger chrysoberyl for about 6 months and have not found something nicer at this larger size. In fact, this is one of the first chrysos I found on the journey. Maybe it is better to keep looking.

I have seen a more saturated colour chrysoberyl around nine carat for $9000. But I prefer the colour of your stone.

If you're looking for sizable little to no window then yes keep looking. Its a pretty nice cut but the window is very obvious.

The color is really lovely though.

I think you would have more luck finding a more saturated stone around the three to four carat mark, and the price would be exponentially less, and it would still be a sizable stone.

I love the color, but for 5.2k you should get something you love and have zero concerns about. I would probably keep looking, but it is lovely

This seems to be the common sentiment.

Are you talking about one that was on Ebay, oval, windowed?
If its the Ebay stone which I'm thinking of (which seems to have sold), yes, it had a more intense highlighter neon saturation, however I was not convinced by the pics/video. When I asked for a video against a white background or a handshot, I was provided with a video against a greenish blue background and told it was a white background. That plus the price put me off.

The window was the major flaw that stood out to me so I made it the main topic in the title. In hindsight a certain degree of windowing would not bother me but I worry that this one is a bit too big. Perhaps if one of the cons was less major (window, inclusion, price), I would be more set on this stone. I do really like it.

I like biiig stones. But less spent on this one is more I can spend on another, so this is something to consider. There was one 4ct stone I found which seemed to have better saturation, but the window took up 80% of the face-up, and it looked too much like a peridot.

And, AJSgems had this one for 2k and I was unsure what to think about it (it doesnt show up in the chrysoberyl category so it probably sold). I should have asked for an additional image/video. https://www.ajsgem.com/chrysoberyl/chrysoberyls/chrysoberyl-5.51-carats.html

I will wait for more info from the vendor on the inclusion and think on it.
Right now I'm leaning towards taking a step back and evaluating my priorities thanks to the perspective provided by you all. Thank you.

It is not on eBay. It is at a wholesaler I have visited

I loved it when I saw your video. I think it would be spectacular in a gypsy or bezel setting -- 18K green gold. If the setter is not the vendor, be aware that it will be hammer-set (pretty sure) and they may not want to gamble on a stone with flaws near the girdle. (Ask me how I know; prong-set is a different story but also a ring for a very different man.). Gypsy-style or bezel will close up the window, imo, and I think the tone is perfect for that style (not too pale and not too dark).

I would bezel-set and make the band crisp and geometric with two circumferential bevels that align with the facets.

I'm doing something similar now -- only half the size! Mine is a cushion so a softer-styled ring.

Multicolour.com has a wide selection of chrysoberyl as well. I would focus more on Tanzanian material. Other material, especially Sri Lankan, is not as neon .

It’s a gorgeous stone! Love that Emerald cut too, agree the window is too large. If I had a generous budget I’d buy it then get it recut to perfection.... :Up_to_something:

I like your design idea. Unfortunately, in the new images, I think the inclusion looks too concerning but I'm not an expert on this stuff.
I hope your project will be a success. I'd love to see the finished product. I may also end up with a smaller stone.

I will keep this in mind, thanks.

I asked about a recut, but as I expected, they said the shallow depth and problematic inclusion make this unfeasible (from what I've seen the 6mm depth is more typical of a 5ct stone, roughly)

Here are the pics they sent me of the inclusion. They confirmed it is a feather.

In this cut, I wouldn't mind the window so much.
