We're always talking about what colors to combine, and I wanted to say that I love this combination of stones and metal color. The vendor's (Ross-Simon) description: "ovals of pink opal and orange carnelian. For added sparkle, .40 ct. t.w. pink sapphires and .20 ct. t.w. diamonds are sprinkled throughout. 18kt rose gold ring. "

I like pairing warm and cool colors together. I prefer color combinations such as yellow and purple, green and pink, orange and blue, etc. . .

My current dream ring would be a neon paraiba surround by neon orange stones like fire opals or mandarin garnets.

Unfortunately, I can't find a ring like that online to show you.

I typically shy away from such color combos in jewelry (guess it reminds me of cheap costume jewelry from my childhood), but I love those color combos in general, if that makes sense. I would love to see your Paraiba (and it would be Paraiba; cuprians would just not make the cut, lol) and Fanta spess ring, TL, and I love your Mahenge an blurple ring. Preg, that color combo is lovely - almost like you are making the combined effect of a padparadscha color. :))

Someone around here made a gorgeous orange and purple ring - my favorite color combo when I was a kid. I'll see if I can find it...

TL, would you do apatite with spess, or too soft?

Minous, yes, I like the blend. The jewelry pieces looks much better to me in real scale on the bottom pic, than the top pic that is blown up. (It is a ring.)

Apatite has a waxy luster, and I don't like stones with a waxy luster, but that's just me. I love high luster stones.

Thanks, TL. I just learned something new. I haven't seen an apatite in person.

Green and pink together is one of my favorite color combos...mint garnet and mahenge spinel specifically. I know I've seen that combo done beautifully around here. I'd love to do it one day myself :)

TL,

What makes you say that Apatite has a waxy luster? I own several (it is one of my favorite stones) and mine, which are well-cut and polished, are far from "waxy".

A simple Google search of "Apatite luster" brought up several results, with Mindat, Gemselect, etc giving Apatite "vitreous" or "glassy" as the luster. That is about where I would put it as well. Definately not "waxy".

I'm sure cutting/polishing would make an impact on the stones luster, as well as the clarity of the crystal. Perhaps you haven't seen a great example in person.

As far as the durability....I haven't set one yet. I know that LD has. I do have one that I want to set, hopefully someday. I will be extremely careful while wearing it!

In a google search, I see apatite being described as waxy as well as vitreous and glassy, e.g. http://books.google.ca/books?id=Z5r5M5ebK7YC&pg=PA268&lpg=PA268&dq=waxy+lustre+apatite&source=bl&ots=rq02QQSJWe&sig=kPQG8nTAT9KSzSO37ALJMO5igCM&hl=en&sa=X&ei=CELsUur2KMW5kQegz4Ag&ved=0CD0Q6AEwBA#v=onepage&q=waxy%20lustre%20apatite&f=false . I seem to remember Lisa Elser once stating that apatite was "a bear to polish". I haven't seen one in person, either, but I'm certainly tempted by the colour! I've been too chicken to set tanzanite, though, so I don't see apatite in my immediate future. ;)

A PSer that I bought a Mahenge spinel from had been thinking of setting it with some really bright spessartites. It wasn't a combo that I would have thought of, but it was beautiful, and somewhat similar to the OP's picture. I like the tsav/hot pink combo, too!

Well, maybe you had a better experience with apatite, or yours had better polish, but the ones I saw had a more dull luster. When I compare them to chyrsoberyl or spinel, they just don't do it for me. Sorry.
