I started out collecting rocks when I was young (I think i was about 8 or 10). My neighbors gave me a rock tumbling machine and i loved seeing how different rocks would look after polishing. Now, I am just a big kid who still loves collecting pretty rocks!!

I hope you keep going on your rock collecting adventures with your mom - that's an awesome bonding experience

I remember years ago when I began my lapidary journey and I was cutting stuff like Jasper, Petrified wood etc. I began a thread here at the request of many members and eventually went trade as an Opal vendor. Nobody gave me any grief over it and I had Gene and Dana both give me lots of advice and tips from their many years at the wheels.

Instead of being condescending, why don't we all help foster someone's interest in gems and minerals so they can begin their own journey - especially if this is a kid who is showing an interest in it.

I have a very large and loved collection of rocks and minerals, it’s a fascinating hobby and career if so inclined.

I Learned a term from a professor last night . It was something he called reverse verification. People don't verify the original information but cast doubt on it. This what Fox News does. It casts doubt on information that others believe to be true.
It is not a small thing . We all have disagreements on here, some nasty, some civil. But, at least try to find out if this is genuine. This person posted on the diamond board and encountered things like send it to the GIA before you send it to Sotheby's or Christies. Is it any wonder that he/she tried the colored stone board. All the kid wanted was to show his rocks. Just like you all do. He/She knew it was only calcite.

If you do things and act by rote and reverse verify, we can end up in trouble. It does please me to see Kenny's retraction, even if you think I am foolish. It made my day!

Hi Annette,

I don’t mean to offend or bash anyone. You are right, jumping to conclusions is rarely
a good idea, and I am guilty of it. All I was saying, based on the few interactions I saw on this threat, indicated that you seemed offended by pretty mild comments that some people, including me, posted.

Not going into any debate, I have no time for that. If I offended anyone, I honestly apologise.
