Ideas for a sapphire reset?

Hi, I currently have a blue sapphire in a CvB setting and I have convinced myself it looks like a class ring. I have not worn it in maybe a year plus due to that. Or more.

The stone is 10.5x8.59x4.7mm. I don't want just a plain solitaire though and I don't want a Diana style halo. I already have one of those in a smaller stone size. I don't think I want a halo and I don't want to do a three stone with a center that large.

Any ideas? Simpler would be better, I think. I did like the setting that @Cerulean had but I would not do as much detail. I find that I don't wear my detailed or halo stuff anymore. Screenshot_20231101-154120.png
 
Here are my current sapphire rings or sapphire adjacent. The only one that I actually wear is the three stone on my middle finger that's in the center. The others just feel too... Extra?

For reference, I was thinking about maybe a Sholdt semi bezel, but I don't know if I like this stone enough to merit the cost.

That's a beautiful collection. It's a pity you don't wear most of them...

I'm assuming you are looking for less detail and clean lines. Your stone is big. Here are some big-stone inspos I've collected:

I'm thinking of these as ideas for the general shape - you can mentally add or remove detail as you like.

I also like the idea of an E-W bezel with steep sculpted shoulders, but I can't find a suitable example.

Thanks, yes- looking for more streamlined and clean. I like the bottom east west a good bit and could see that with a half bezel.

I think the east west bezel you are thinking of could maybe be like this as a base?

They can add a textured finish or engraving. They do excellent metal work.

But they are $$, similar to CVB pricing.

It is a large, pretty sapphire though.

There is some windowing, but I never had it recut because it really didn't bother me that much. I honestly don't like the modern precision cuts either. I know most prefer that, but I don't. I could have the pavilion tweaked possibly to close it a little. I never wear it though, so wearing it is probably better than not?
 
I totally think a solitaire is the way to go with such a large gem. Perhaps set in yellow gold with engraving or chasing to add texture. Van Craenest (sp?) would be the dream.

Whoops I see you said streamlined and clean lol! I’d still do yellow gold but maybe hammered or brushed finish.

I'm open to engraving/chasing! I just don't want a halo anymore because it's not what I reach for anymore.

I wonder if I had the outer engraving polished to shiny versus matte if it would make it less class ring? I see a class ring, whether it's there or not!

You could remove the antiquing and it would change the look a lot. A Q tip and some diluted ammonia would do it.
 
This is out of left field, but what about converting the ring to a pendant or a bracelet? Remove the shank and add a bail or bangle… would be stunning

I actually thought about a bangle. I have not ruled it out!

I used to wear bracelets a lot, but stopped. Maybe that is the way to go, because I do have a lot of sapphire rings!

Thanks! I wanted to see the profile and basket. I may ask DK how much somethign like this would be, with maybe some light engraving on the band for interest. Something simple.

I am on the fence about a recut. It does have a bit if of a window, but I don't dislike the stone as is. I may ask for it to be unmounted and then see what someone thinks about closing it up a bit.

I think I am going to take it a local jeweler that has done sizing for me before to steam clean off the antiquing and polish it. Maybe that will help without resetting. I will try that first. It's easy enough to add the antiquing back if I don't like it.

That wave style setting is very classic and common. I think Stuller even has a version! I know Green Lake jewelers also does. Point being, I think you could find many versions. I really like the pave on the one lala found though!

I would not touch it. It's lovely -- as are the others.

It looks nothing like a class ring -- except it has a big blue stone in it! So will the next iteration, btw.

One DS wears a step-cut sapphire bezel-set E/W in a wide, heavy, featureless matte-finish platinum ring. He shakes his head as he tells me he gets asked all the time if it's a class ring. It looks nothing like a class ring but it's the only frame of reference that his post-college cohort has.
 
Oh, I've always loved this ring! I actually have a LT wishlist folder with it in it, but private school for my teenagers keeps my jewelry budget pathetically small lately.
 
So, I decided to have the ring polished to a shiny finish and remove some patina. I think it's much better and I think I will leave it as is now. It feels a little less class ring. It was still always be a big blue stone so not subtle but I think this is much better!
