I'm working on a reset of a family ring. It's a pear diamond (.6 carats) with four tapered baguettes (.39 carats total). I'm 45 years old and wear a size 6 ring. I am thinking about getting a new center stone--round brilliant cut, approximately one carat--with my existing baguettes, in a setting similar to this three-stone Tiffany setting: https://www.tiffany.com/engagement/...th-baguette-side-stones-in-platinum-GRP10898/

Do I want to incorporate all four baguettes or just use two? I'm worried that using all four (two on either side) will overwhelm a one carat center stone. Welcome insights as I know this group has lot of expertise to share. Thanks in advance.

I would probably just use two (meaning one baguette for each side) I have a similar ring to what you linked. My baguettes are just straight instead of tapered. So I might be biased but I think it would be so beautiful that way!

Thank you. The existing baguettes are H in color, SI-1 clarity. The jeweler is directing me to a round diamond for the center stone that is .98 carats, F in color, SI-1, with a price of $5684. Does that sound about right in terms of stone match and price?

What is important to you? Personally I’d never buy an F colour or higher. I wouldn’t pay for colour the eye can’t really tell apart from a G or H. But I’m not colour sensitive. i would definitely go for a better clarity and a lower colour. You’ve also not stated the most important “C” - cut! If the cut is poor your expensive f colour diamond will still look dull.

With a budget of $5k I’d be looking for something in the G-H colour range, excellent cut, and VS2 clarity and would get the biggest eye clean stone I could find within those parameters. But everyone has their own preferences.

I also wouldn’t be buying it from a jeweller and paying a 30% mark up....

I just did a super quick search for you on James Allen and $5k would indeed get you an ideal cut VS2 H colour of about 1ct. That would give you a great looking diamond.

Hi. Yes, excellent for the cut! I hear you & know there will be a jeweler mark up. I just wanted a point of comparison if I were to buy locally. I’ve been looking online and also at Blue Nile which just opened a shop nearby and they were super helpful. I’m going to ask the jeweler if he will set a stone I source elsewhere. I appreciate the feedback.
