I have always wanted a round diamond for an engagement ring. After looking around, I came upon some oval diamonds that are really high quality and about $1000-1500 less because it''s oval and not round. My band will be a slightly thicker platinum band. Does anyone have any ideas on why go round and not oval? Thanks!

No reason other than the price difference and personal preference you already mentioned.

I like fancy shapes and had a 2.05 D-VS2 Oval for many years (got replaced by a pear when I married websailor).

However, it did have a slightly deep depth percentage and my heart sank
one day when a jeweler said, what is it? 1.75 cts?

Not really

I could find a few reaosn why oval is better: less common, less expensive, larger looking than rounds due to elongated shape - at least when depth is ok. and it can be ok. for an olval at less than it is for a round anyway...

Perhaps you could go down in color and clarity with a top cut round because the brilliance hides tint and inclusions under bright light. But this would be the only thing pro-round I can think of.

I have seen one interesting new oval cut that, despite being a bit thick in the girdle - it actually worked.

Normal ovals loose quite a lot of brilliance. They are too shallow in one cross section - and too deep in the other.
