Hi guys and gals. My name is Ted and some of you may have read a few of my posts in RT. In addition, some of you may have helped me pick out my engagement ring!

Let me start with a little background info, ill keep it short: My undergraduate was in physical education with a heavy human science background. Currently I am working on my Masters in Community Health Education (school track). I plan on teaching phys ed and health in the school systems soon, just subbing for now and finishing my grad work. In addition, I work part time as a physical trainer for all ages.

I just found this section of the forums recently and I was thinking about how much I can contribute here. I was wondering if anyone would be interested if I was start a forum thread once or twice every week about little tips here and there to help influence everyone towards a healthier lifestyle? Let me know what you guys think. I have tons of information that I would just love to share.

First Food for thought:

Interval training for women burns approximately 10-20 percent more fat than constant cardio training.

For an example; If i was to workout for 30 minutes of cardio; I would interval train by jogging at a fast pace (5-7mph) for 3-4 mins and then immediately walking (3-4 mph) for 4-5 minutes.

The science behind it: (trying to keep it simple) Running is very aerobic, and in result will lead to burning carbohydrates. Walking, will lower your heart rate to a state of non-aerobic exercise. This is where your body starts to burn/use fats as source of energy.

Tests and experiments done through exercise science have shown that a combination (interval training) will increase the amount of fat calories used during exercise!

Ok. This was just a little preview of some information that I can post.. if this is old news or something you are not interested in, feel free to let me know. It wont hurt my feelings :)

Hi Ted, wow, that is awesome you have your degree in PE and a science background!!! Sounds like you have lots of good info that we could use in the Healthy Lifestyle thread; please join us there. Lots of us work on eating healthy and excercise. Here is the thread https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/healthier-lifestyle-thread-7th-sept-till-13th-sept.124619/ and Lorelei starts a new thread every Monday. Good to see you in the Healthy Lifestyle subforum!!!

Thanks for posting! I think your advice would be really helpful to many of us. I agree with Skippy, please post on the weekly HLT threads. That way we don''t have to hunt for two threads and all the info will be together. And, we could all discuss how the tips would incorporate with our current goals, programs, etc. It really would be great to have an on-site go-to-guy if you''re up for it!

Hey Ted.......as the lone guy on the HLT, I''d love it if you joined us and like Skippy said, the HLT would be a great place for you to help us. You''ll find a great group of people who all work very hard towards maintaining a healthy lifestyle and we share our successes (and failures) on a daily basis. Hope to see you there........

Hi, tap!

Thanks for the tips. I just wanted to say good luck with your career aspirations. I'm a former high school English teacher (I teach college now) and I think you'll find it to be an enormously fulfilling career.

My husband is a muscle specialist and an OT, and we're both certified personal trainers (although I don't train anyone anymore.) It's an exciting industry if you stay abreast of all the current research.

Are you familiar with Tom Purvis and his RTS programs? They're a great way to keep up-to-date. I'd say the biggest problem with professionals in the health and fitness industry is that they stop learning once they become "professionals."

Here's a link to the RTS website. If you're at all interested in biomechanics you'll love the programs. My husband always comes back from the courses with new things to think about.

ETA: Congrats on your engagement!

Hi Ted!

We need you!! LOL

I think many of us here could gain benefits from your posts, especially people like me who want to lose weight and change my lifestyle for the better

Ted, so what about guys?

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. ill start posting in the weekly post instead of creating two similar threads. Stone-cold, to answer your questions:

Interval training burns more fat calories for guys and girls; the numbers just show a slightly higher percentage for females.
