I don''t know if everyone has read my "Lurker no more!" post, but in it I talked about wanting the Tiffany Novo... Well, my and FF are going to make the 3 hour drive to the Nashville Tiffany''s to look at them! I''m excited, but worried because I''m afraid we''ll get there and I''ll either 1) hate the ring
8.gif
2) love the ring and he''ll hate it or 3) Love the ring, he''ll love it, It''ll make me want it more. We''re not buying anything today though either
39.gif
I asked what we''d do if we find the "the one" while we''re there and he''s like "I''m not buying anything."

He just called me, and his mom just gave him a 20 minute lecture about how he can''t afford to buy me a ring at Tiffany''s and he better not even think about it (mind you he''s 22 years old and has a very stable career). She''s doing this because he called about a quote on a novo and that particular one is out of our price range, and he then told his Mom, so now she probably hates me and thinks i''m pressuring him to buy the $18,000 ring! Why must this be so FREAKIN dramatic???

Hopefully things won''t go too awful...

Congrats on going ring shopping! I know you think his mom is being dramatic, but if I were her I''d be a little scared of the Tiffany''s brand name too.

Stable career or not, it''s hard for a guy to say no to an expensive ring when he sees his girlfriend put that sparkly on for the first time. So be inquisitive, try on lots of settings, and best of luck with the Novo! Can''t wait to hear how it all turns out :)

I really don''t know your FF''s financial situation but 18,000 is a huge chunk of change for the average 22 yr old, so if I were his mom or anyone else close to him I might react the same way unfortunately. However, if money is no issue then there is no harm in buying a ring from Tiffany''s. You get great craftsmanship and beautiful diamonds (generally.) Now, if money IS an issue, I would highly suggest looking at the alternatives to a Tiffany Novo. For example, a square hearts and arrows stone with a thin pave band, or a square cushion with a micropave band. I would go to Good Old Gold about the square hearts and arrows and ERD if I wanted to try a cushion. The plus would be that you''d get a WAY bigger stone for the money and that''s a WIN WIN situation for everyone!
Best of luck at Tiffany''s, hopefully you''ll fall in love with something that fits well into your FF''s budget. But do not be discouraged if you don''t, you can get a similar look somewhere else for less!

I was thinkin'' the same thing! Most 22-year-olds are just fighting their way out of college, with very little savings (and usually a little debt, just for good measure

). I hope that you take the advice of other PSers and try not to get too swept away by the Tiffany name, since it comes with quite a premium!

DMBsgirl''s suggestions for alternatives are really great ones
1.gif
But if you really do have your heart set on Tiff''s, I hope that that is what you get, without too much financial hardship!

Thanks for your advice... We''ve tried on other settings before, but I''ve always been in love with the Novo. I know other places have similar rings, like an H&A with a ritani endless love or a micropave band, but I just don''t like the cut of the diamond or the setting. I''d rather have the original
4.gif
Plus, I don''t want to order a ring off the net because we''d rather be able to hold the ring in our hands and physically see it.

I guess I should have clarified myself, I don''t want the $18,000 one, that''s just one that they told him about over the phone. It''s a larger center stone (1 1/3 ct) than we wanted. We talked to a wonderful SA there and we got on the computer and checked inventory elsewhere and we found a lot of rings within our price range and size. But, I also came to realize it''ll be SEVERAL more months before we get engaged.. better than several more years right?

I also tried on the Lucida, tiffany setting solitare, RB solitare with channel setting and the Legacy....but my heart is still with the Novo.. but it seems the cushion cut faces up smaller than a RB...

I wish i could win the lotto....I saw a lot of things in that store i loved!

I can understand why his mother was a bit worried as at 22 she probably wants him to save up more of his money before getting a ring and getting engaged. You should let Tiffanys know exactly what size etc you''re looking for and see what they come up with. Would you rather a larger non-tiffany ring or a smaller tiffany ring?

I will probably get into trouble for saying this, but in my mind a man who is still being lectured in this way by his mother doesn't really seem old enough or independent enough to be getting married or spending so much $$$ at this stage in his life.

Again, We are NOT interested in the $18,000 1 1/3 ct. It''s just when he called the Charlotte store, that was the only one they had close to a 1 ct. We are looking at ones more in the $10,000 - $12,000 range. We did let them know what we were looking for and the price range and we got a very good idea what it available to us. I did a lot of research on rings and ring/diamond dealers before even mentioning to Jon about looking at them.

I can see what you mean Pandora, but you''d have to know his mom to understand. He''s the oldest and I think she has issues cutting the apron strings. She''s older and very weird about things. They wouldn''t co-sign for him to get a credit card to build some sort of credit until he was 21 because they think 18 yr olds shouldn''t have Credit cards because they''ll put themselves in debt, even though Jon is an extremely responsible person and very frugile with his money. So now that''s really screwing him up because he can''t get much of a credit line anywhere.

That is a huge chunk of change...mighty nice down payment on a house....

That was kind of what I was thinking.

If I was his mother, I wouldn''t be happy with a 22 year old spending 10-12k on a ring unless he had already bought a house, paid of his loans and was totally financially comfortable.

It may well be that your bf has already done all these things, in which case that''s fine.

In any case, each to their own re. priorities - I''m merely pondering why your bf''s mother might be freaking out.

ITA.

Living at home with mummy and daddy- Mum should be lecturing
Living in an apartment with car loans etc- none of mums business but not to intelligent to spend that kind of dough on a ring
Living with a mortgage on a home, no car payments, no student loans, with 10-15 G extra cash laying around....Priceless.

There are probably other categories to be x-treme, but I think the illustration is clear and why we all love UPGRADES!! lol

Yes it is.. but my grandparents passed away 2 years ago and left me a large inheritance, which will be used as a down payment on a house. I''ve also got a trust in my uncle''s company which pays for all of my ungrad & grad school.. and any left will be used as a dp on a house too.

Sorry girls, but... Isn''t that sad that she had to justify herself and give us so much personal details for you to approve?

It's always nice to have the full story, and sounds like ring shopping is going to be super fun without the financial worries! If you want a Novo, go for it....just beautiful! Oh, and don't worry about the Mum, they love to keep their boys in the nest as long as possible!

Good Luck and happy shopping!

No, I''m not trying to gain anyone''s approval. If I were, that would be a really sad life to lead. I''m not trying to give so many personal details either (do you think i''m happy that my grandparents died? No. Do you think i''m excited that I have an inheritance? No. I''d rather have my grandparents back then all of the money in the world) I just didn''t give the whole story and apparently from my first post people were confused about what we were actually looking at/considering.

Believe what you want, but keep your rude & uninformed comments to youself. No need to start unwarrented and unnecessary drama. And No, I''m not looking for your approval either.

I didn''t see it that way... she may have been. That''s the problem with reading someone''s words instead of physically hearing it.. hard to see facial expressions and voice inflections...

Sorry if I took your post the wrong way Anchor.....

I would love to see peoples faces when they are replying etc! haha I always have a big old smile on mine and I am never trying to be ugly or rude, but my humor does not always reflect as intended!

p.s when you go try on the novo, it is a cardinal rule to take photos hehehe (Sales Associate permitting)...

It seems like you''re BF''s mother and dilworth79 future mother-in-law have a little something in common. Maybe they should get together and talk about how they need to let their sons grow up and be independent!

Hopefully you''ll both end up with the rings you want... not want mama wants! Good Luck!

er... Not trying to be rude here, and definitely not trying to create drama. Why you would say I think you''re happy your grandparents died is beyond me. I was just saying it''s a shame that sometimes people get so inquisitive about details and other people''s financial situation. It was''t even addressed to you.
