This is a little long...but I thought I''d share about my experiences with both Macy''s and Target...if anyone is considering registering there. Target had been a long time favorite store of mine, and always had good products at decent prices. I can''t tell you how many times I have had to change out things on my registry because they were out of stock and they could not tell me when or if they were ever coming back in...not happy whatsoever, but I figured it could be worse( as you will read on, it got worse, hah!) Its just a registry to give people gift ideas so you don''t wind up with 500 toasters!

I tend to think they are having problems with their vendors bc of the economy and thats why they are having a hard time keeping things in stock? Who knows! I still had rock solid macys...right?

Now onto Macy''s...another one of my favorite stores...which had the bulk of our items, bedding, china, bathroom, kitchen appliances and so on.

My mom had called me two weeks ago to tell me that she looked at my registry and all of my china was purchased already! I was excited, china in my family is a tradition, and while it isn''t used all the time, and I''m sure we could use other things, I couldn''t imagine not having it! The aunts always purchase it for the niece. Lucky for me, I''m the only niece! So I had a gut feeling that I would be receiving all of it! :) This is the one area my family is traditional, and we have dinner parties often. We just bought a house and I couldn''t wait to use it....and then I get a phone call...

My FSIL calls me to tell me my registry now says I still need 2 place settings. So I checked it and thought oh, well maybe someone thought I could use "this" over "that"...and returned the china and purchased something else. Nope, not the case. She is involved in the planing of my shower (its supposed to be a surprise!) and asked if anyone had recently called and said they weren''t able to go, answer was no. She told me to call Macys and see what happened.

I called Macy''s customer service just to see if there was a glitch, and expressed that I didn''t want to know who purchased it, I just wanted to make sure everything was ok. The woman was very nice and helpful but apologized and said no, nothing has been returned it must have been a glitch...after looking at my registry she realizes that not only 2 sets of china weren''t purchased, I was missing 4! She apologized again..and corrected the registry. I let my mom know what happened and she got very quiet and said "your aunts weren''t able to purchase you china because it said fulfilled, they got you other gifts instead"...they had just thought someone else had purchased it and were upset that they couldn''t carry on the family tradition...but were happy I was receiving it anyway.

I said, oh well if it matters to them that much, why don''t they switch out the gifts, I''m happy with whatever they are giving us to start out with. My mom looked at the registry, to top it all off...the china is on back order now, and she said "there just isn''t enough time". Which basically means my shower is probably tomorrow as I am going to be out of state next Saturday and wouldn''t be able to go to my own shower! lol

So thank you Macys, you ruined my surprise and ruined a family tradition! Macy''s offered nothing for letting a mistake like that go on for 2.5 weeks, not a oh, we''ll give you a place setting, or we''ll give you 20% off the remaining china for our mistake. They just said, well you can use your completion discount after your wedding. Gee...thanks.

When I have a baby, I can guarantee I won''t register at either place for my baby shower!

I''ve heard of weird things happening on a registry before, but this one is just not right!

Oh how horrible! It's very unprofessional of them not to offer anything. And I can just imagine how upset your aunts must have been at not being able to continue the family tradition. Could you tell your mum to let them know that they could exchange their gifts and just give them to you when you come back from your trip? This way it won't matter that the shower is drawing near...

knowing my aunts, if they couldn''t purchase the china, they probably purchased very thoughtful and practical gifts..if we have to purchase 4 place settings after the wedding, its not the worst thing, I''m just not impressed how Macy''s handled the situation and wanted to give a warning to anyone thinking about registering there...I''ve already told my recently engaged and soon to be engaged friends! They are steering clear of both. Their response was "Bed Bath and Beyond and Crate and Barrel"...im sure people have their issues with both of them, but they didn''t like hearing this one!

I thought Macy''s would be easiest because they are everywhere!

I''m so sorry to hear your tradition was ruined. I will agree with you though that Macy''s has issues,I also have a registry there and have had a lot of problems.I actually ended up moving the stuff that was really important to us over to the Pottery Barn registry (bedding, curtains, dinnerware, etc.) because stuff on the Macy''s registry kept disappearing or being back ordered.

Once again I''m really sorry though.

We first registered at Macys back when we were getting married. I had so many problems that I canceled the registry and went elsewhere. Thank goodness it was in plenty of time.

Ugh, this is very similar to my Bloomingdale''s issues -- Macy''s and Bloomie''s are the same company.

I''m sorry they spoiled your surprise, though. Boo on them.

Ohh man, that''s awful! I''m sorry you had such a bad experience

Sorry you're having isses. I never had a single thing go wrong with mine, but sh*t happens. I don't think Macy's really owes you a free setting or a discount, and I don't see how you're coming up with that logic. You're still getting gifts, just not the ones you want.

You can also return anything you got and use the completion discount to get the china.

We are registered at BBB and CB....and not a single issue from either. Kinda sucks its too late for you at this point. Hopefully you get it all sorted out at the end.

Eek! This is good information to have. I opened registries at Macy''s and Target, but I have not actually registered for anything yet. I may be changing my registries after seeing your and others'' complaints. At least I know I don''t have to worry about Bed Bath and Beyond.

I''m sorry you are experiencing this. I know it''s a hassle having to deal with CS and all, however, I don''t really understand why you think you are entitled to a discount or extra place setting. Glitches happen and all of my friends who have had registries have had their stories. As shertz mentioned above, Bloomie''s has a lousy registry system too, so I think it is a company-wise issue that is affecting A LOT of people. We''ve kept our Bloomie''s registry to a minimum for this purpose. We would have to ship back anything we don''t want because there is no Bloomie''s were we currently reside. Bloomie''s is more convenient for our guests than it is for us!

At least you have the completion discount to get the items you really want. Enjoy your shower!

Ditto this. I don''t think Macy''s needs to compensate you at all for having their products be backordered, or for a computer glitch. That''s just how life goes sometimes!

Thritto.

If the items were back ordered I honestly would mind...that happens everywhere.

What has me bothered is this wasn''t a computer glitch for a day, it went on for almost three weeks...and made family members upset. I wonder what would have happened if they hadn''t caught the mistake before my shower. There would have been a ton of confused people at my shower! I wouldn''t return anything that was given to me unless it was a double, everything on our registry is either things we need or would love to have.

The post was mainly to let girls know that this could happen to them, just an FYI of the sort. Ive been hearing some pretty bad things about target and macy''s registries lately!

I''m sorry for your disappointment

very annoying!

That''s unfortunate, but have fun at your shower anyway!

I understand why you''re annoyed, but this kind of stuff happens all the time with registries so it''s probably best to just accept that fact going forward! After your wedding, you can return any of your other gifts and use the store credit to purchase your china...problem solved. It can still be from your aunts in your mind!

Can I just say that we had a similar experience with Target. They are a longtime favorite store of mine so naturally I wanted to register there. Saturday was our shower and we had over 50 people show up. Most of them shopped at Target. We ended up with MULTIPLE same items. We got 3 sets of canisters, two cutting boards, three foot mats, and numerous other things. I checked the registry online and all the things were doubled and tripled up. Not sure why they wouldn''t be doubled up on the printout in the store if they weren''t online.. but okay whatever.

So I figured it was just a mistake on Target''s part, right? Off we went to target on Sunday to exchange some things. They told us that without a gift receipt we would have to go sign into our registry and print out the sheet showing it was their mistake. So I go to the side of the store to sign in, and my password and email address don''t work. It keep saying that they can''t find us in the computer. I am 100% sure that our login information was correct because I use the same password on everything. I had also signed in from home on numerous occasions.

I had to go up to the register and tell the lady what was going on. We were able to pull up our registry (without signing in) but apparently you have to be able to sign in to make an exchange.. which is all we wanted to do (it''s not like we were asking for a refund). She told me that under those circumstances Target would only allow us to exchange up to $70 worth of duplicates per ID (DF showed his drivers license). They said that if we get duplicates at the wedding, I have to come in and show my ID and they will let us exchange up to $70 worth of duplicates that day. Can you believe that? So ridiculous. And it was THEIR mistake.. they were the ones who fouled up the registry. Like you said, the whole point of making a registry is so that guests don''t purchase duplicates. We had so many people embarrassed because they bought the exact same thing someone else bought. My sister invited her two best friends to the shower and BOTH bought the same thing as someone else. They both told her after the shower how embarrassed they were. I felt so bad about it.

Luckily our exchanges on Sunday were exactly $70.11 (we lucked out), but I will never recommend target registry to anyone. So frustrating.

Re. the highlighted: I wonder if there is a significant delay in time between when the items are purchased and when they show up on the printout/registry? The only possibility or reason I can think of is that you had multiple guests who waited until the last minute (day before or day of your shower) to purchase a gift, and they ended up choosing the things that, in the store on the printout at the time, showed as unfulfilled.

Target is notorious for registry issues.

I am notorious for not having the registry scanned when I buy a gift. I typically forget to print it out and don''t want to deal with it in the store because either the machine is down or there''s a line. So I go online before shopping and see what''s left. I know, I''m a horrible person and a bad guest.

This is what I wonder too. Perhaps some people didn''t get them scanned when they checked out?

I''m sorry to hear about your registry issues. Many of my recently-married friends also had issues with Target and Macy''s registries. We registered at C&B and BB&B, and neither had any problems. C&B was especially great and hassle-free when it came to a few items that arrived in poor condition; they just shipped us replacements, no questions asked.
