So a few days ago I posted about going tanning. I''ve been before and was just debating because I wasn''t sure if I had time to really develop color between now and my wedding next Sunday. So I went on Monday and was fine. Then I went to the salon today and went into the booth for the same amount of time, and FRIED my face and my bubbies. But nowhere else. Apparently they changed the bulbs and didn''t bother to warn me. So I know for a fact my face is going to peel between now and the wedding. My questions are:

1. Is it better to let it heal and then when it starts to peel, exfoliate it and then moisturize or
2. Don''t encourage it to peel even if it does naturally?

Right now I''m sporting some nice string and goggle lines from the tanning goggles. My boobs are KILLING ME. I''m covered in aloe and solarcaine and I took some advil too.

HELP ME!!!

If I burn on my face I try my hardest not to let it start pealing naturally. Pealing makes my skin itch so bad it drives me crazy...I try to keep as much moisturizer on as possible...
However, I don't burn easily and if I do it tends to fade into a nice tan fairly quickly, so if my wedding was in 11 days my skin would probably be ok by then.

I think it depends on your skin type.

ETA: I'm sorry your in such pain...the tanning salon should have warned you. That's very dangerous on their part...I hope you did or will let them know they need to at least warn the next person.

I tan and fade from burn to tan pretty quickly too, but I''ve never actually had to think about the time line, ya know? There''s a certain luxury to burning and getting over it naturally. I''ve never had an issue where I had a deadline with it.

I would get to the dermatologist and ask for some Biafine. It you get it tomorrow you probably won''t peal. Its a perscription wound healing emultion. Original use was for burns. I use it on every sunburn.

Just keep moisturizing! Use the aloe like you are, take some aspirin for the redness and rest yourself! If you have the chance to get that medicine I would say go for it. Don''t exfoliate until the redness is gone.

So sorry you are burned! I got quite red today too at the tanning salon.

Oh! and did you do stand up or lay down? Don''t use the string on the goggles when you do the lay down. I just rest them on my eyes and they do the trick. For the stand up-get Wink-Ease-they stick on your eyes and are disposable. Your tanning salon should have them for purchase.

Crap, that sucks! I would skip the aloe and just use lotion. And try to get whatever em1 mentioned. Aloe feels good but I don''t think it moisturizes as well as lotion does. I hope you heal quickly and don''t peel too much!

P.S. You have now officially chased any lingering thought of tanning before my wedding from my mind, because this would totally happen to me!

Sorry that I don't have any good suggestions other than what was already mentioned.

Just want to send you loads of healing dust and hope that you feel better and recover before the wedding.

There is some Banana Boat after-sun stuff that I SWEAR by to keep from peeling. Let me see if I can find the name of it.

So sorry to hear that you burned! The sunburn I got last summer peeled even though I put all kinds of lotion and aloe on it. I do think the aloe helped more than any lotion. My friend''s step-mom turned us on to "Hold it Right There" from Bath & Body Works. It seems to help moisturize, keeps you from peeling, and turns your burn into a tan. I wish I''d had a bottle of it when I got burned last! I think I''d vote for option B- don''t encourage the peeling. Just moisturize, moisturize, moisturize and ignore any peeling. I also wanted to add... are you doing your own makeup? I would buy some green concealer or powder or something. It definitely helps to tone down the redness.

Oh buggar! sorry to hear that Hudson...

If it were me in this position i would keep up with the moisturising and much as you can and invest in some decent after sun lotion (i like clairns but there is plenty out there). If you do start to peel a i would do daily GENTLE exfoliations to keep it looking as fresh as possible, you may also want to consider investing in some good quality self tanner (or go have a spray, but i know your not keen on that) to help even out the different skin colours before your wedding.

I would also be seeing what options you have in regards to the tanning salon being so negligent. Personally i think they should be covering the costs to fix this stuff up, you are getting married in less than 2 weeks!!

I take full responsibility for it. I should have gotten out the second I started to feel warm. I unfortunately didn''t get that "burning" feeling because the booth (stand up) has these super duper fans. The pain is a bit less today but I''m definitely pink on my face. I went to bed with lots of aloe (I think it was the Banana Boat stuff-it''s blue with a red spray cap) and I think I''m going to pick up some of the B_BW stuff oobie mentioned. I think I have time for it to peel, I just hate the phase where you look like your face is falling off. Like I said, all I really care about is my face. The other areas of my body that burned (just the sides of my chest) won''t show on the wedding day so it''s OK if they peel. I guess I always thought skin was skin and never realized that some skin is more sensitive to light than other parts. I''m not planning on exfoliating any time soon because my face is definitely still irritated and that''s just asking for trouble. So I''ll wait until the burn mellows to a nice caramel colored tan and then do it.

Thanks for your support and help ladies, I really appreciate it.

i would take advil. i''ve never been able to save my skin from peeling (i might not have found the right product!). my advice: when your face starts to peel, exfoliate bc the skin has to come off-it''s dead. then, if you are not prone to breakouts, apply neosporin to the really bad areas and lotion to the rest. how many days until your wedding? don''t worry about looking blotchy-even severely uneven skin can be matched. worse case you can get some dermablend, which covers everything.

I''ve never intentionally tanned, but when I was a kid I''d get dreadful sunburns outside. MOISTURIZE! And definitely consult a dermatologist. Sorry you''re in pain.

If you''re anything like me, I would go to a dermatologist. I burned my face a few years ago and even though I lathered the aloe, and moisturized, my face peeled badly--like I had had a laser surgery of some sort--but I had a BAD sunburn. If yours is not severely burned, keep using the aloe and moisturize often.

I think you''ll be okay by next week.

MOISTURIZE!

Oh that sucks they didn''t tell you about the new bulbs! When I used to tan, they put a sign up in the room right after they changed them.

I bought aloe from Walmart that has lidocaine and some extra vitamins like A/E (I think) in it. JD shaves his head and is notorious for not using sunscreen. I also swear by Noxema. It looks ridiculous, but I slather myself with it (Well, I used to, when I actually used to go out in the sun) and hang out. I just let it soak in. Several years ago I laid out at a lake and ended up looking like a lobster..I slathered Noxema all over my entire body and laid down in the basement for a couple hours..when I woke up, I was a bit pink is all.

Like some others said BANANNA BOAT LOTION! You can even use it on your face. I''ve been tanning for a while now to get tan for my wedding. I don''t burn but I still use this stuff faithfully everywhere.

Other real sun-sunburns I am a huge fan of Aloe, stick it in the fridge to chill it then apply, your non red color should be gone!

Good Luck, that stinks!!!

packrat-Noxema is an interesting idea. How''s the menthol on the sensitive burned skin though?

I''m sitting here at my desk applying and reapplying Nivea. All I have on hand is the hand cream, but it seems to be working...Luckily only my cheeks and on the outside of my eyes are burned/peeling so I don''t have to worry about the Tzone getting nasty.

banana boat after sun lotion with aloe...its yellow colored and is usually on the bottom of the sunscreen display in grocery/drug stores. I LOVE this stuff. I buy it year around because it helps with razor burn. And if I''m peeling I put some on the peeling and its never broken me out on my face.
Be careful with nivea and other lotions, because they can have stuff that will actually irritate your skin. (maybe alcohol or something)

I found the Noxema to be cooling and quite soothing actually. It never stung or anything. It looks ridiculous, especially after it''s soaked into your skin-you look like you have some sort of strange skin condition..but I just would keep putting it on and letting it soak in.

Nivea has a moisturizer that has a self tanning tone to it. I wonder if you got the lightest shade and used that if it would not only moisturize but help to turn the red to more of a tan?

I have used it when I have gotten too red and it just tones down the red to a shade of tan and at least makes it look better even if the burn still hurts.

Three words: Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize

Good luck! I''m sure it will be just fine. And if not, makeup should cover any oopie-peels up.

i''d like an update! how is your skin today?

I''m doing well today. My face is no longer burned, but my cheeks are still peeling. Just my cheeks though. I''m actually afraid to really exfoliate because I don''t want all of my face to peel. It''s especially gross IMO when you peel along your hairline and nothing can cover that up! My bubbie are still pink, but no longer hurting.

Thanks for checking on my coco. And thanks everyone else for your suggestions.

Aww... Take care Hudson_Hawk

oh good!! i think you will be in great shape for the big event. glad to hear it!!

one more thing-if you decide to self-tan with a fake tanner at home, stay away from the kind you spray on from a bottle. i find that those streak WAY more than the normal kinds that are a lotion you just rub on.

Phew! What a relief Hudson. I was having horrible visions of a very purple, very peeling bride! Not long to go now!!!! Good luck with everything in the leadup.

another good way to avoid streaking of self tanner is to mix self tanner with regular lotion. Its not quite as potent then and tends to not get the dark knees/elbows/ankle as bad as just plain self tanner does.

I also do this with foundation. I don't usually need foundatilon but mixing a little of a liquid foundation with a face lotion gives great light coverage and I think works better than just tinted mosturizers. This might be agood idea if you are still a little red/pink/peely on the big day.

Just thought I would resurrect this thread to, well, hijack it.

1. HH, I was thrilled to read in another thread that your burn has subsided and everything is falling into place for the wedding. Enjoy your day!

2. I am now in love with BBW "hold it right there!" I am a "burn then tan" kind of girl, even with decent SPF. My first few times in the sun every year or vacation I always burn. After that I tan pretty well. I knew I was going to be in the sun this week, so I bought a bottle per recommendations of pscope ladies. Sure enough, I burned to a lovely pink on Tuesday. I applied the lotion twice on Tues night and then morning and night on Wed. By Thursday the burn wasn't even noticeable except for two small areas on my back. Thursday I burned a lovely scarlet. I applied the stuff stuff twice Thurs night and once this morning. The burn is already half as noticeable. I ran out today and bought a second bottle because I read it is a seasonal product and I want a nice, full bottle for our trip to Mexico this winter!

Thank you, as always, pscopers.
