I had a bit of a rough journey (in a first world problem sort of way) with choosing a center stone for my wedding ring, but I am so happy to have stuck to my guns when I decided that I only deserved the best for my budget. I turned down the rather lousy performers offered to me locally and decided I could do way better by shopping online on my own. Big thanks for all the help received at Rocky Talk, straight to me and by reading all the other topics available on related topics, I just love absorbing all the information you so gracefully share with us newbies. :read:

((Just a quick explanation again for anyone who might be wondering why I've bought a half carat for a wedding ring. Here in Scandinavia the traditions concerning rings are somewhat different. The engagement usually takes place without any rings and afterwards the couple chooses their rings together - traditionally both get a matching band with no fancy stuff - white and yellow gold are usually the only options available. The fancy only takes place with the woman's wedding ring, which has one or several small diamonds. The size of them is usually no more than .30ct at max if it is a solitaire. The color grades are quite strictly in the F-H range and clarity almost always VS (though mall stores offer mainly SI's). The cut options are mainly rb and princess. Cushions, radiants and such are known only by the most underground jewelers  ))

I started by searching for a 30 pointer modern cushion, but ended up drooling over AVC's and then pretty quickly understood what I really loved were the AVRs with their lovely feminine flower patterning. The ordering process with the very helpful and patient David at GOG was really easy. All my questions and concerns were handled quickly and in a super friendly and professional manner - something that I sadly haven't really experienced at jewelry stores before. The diamond arrived about 2 weeks ago, but I didn't get to posting until now.

I am actually missing my 0.52ct G VS2 AVR now that I finally took it to be set. The setting is going to platinum with fishtail prongs and half eternity side stones on a thin 2mm band.

The pics are quite bad and really don't show the crisp whiteness nor any of the facet patterning. I only took these pics (in the middle of the night, at kitchen) before taking the diamond to my jeweler and I am quite bummed that I didn't remember to take any juicy outdoor pictures.. I've asked our wedding photographer to take some nice ring **** shots, so I hope that will make up for it :)
Now I'll just have to wait until the end of June to get to see and wear it.. :nono:

 what a crispy diamond indeed!!! It must be really hard having to wait until ti's ready.

And I recognize where you are coming from: we have a comparable ring tradition here in the Netherlands.
Your ring will be gorgeous :appl:

Congrats it's a beautiful stone!!!!

I think an AVR is a great choice. I can't wait to see photos of your completed ring.

Exciting! AVRs are so beautiful. Can't wait to see the finished ring.

That's going to be spectacular! How will you wait to wear it????

Wonderful choice!!! :appl: Just think, you'll probably be the only one in your country with an AVR!!! Can't wait to see the finished ring!

Sweetness! I'm looking forward to seeing it set. Congratulations - wear it in good health and joy and laughter and love.

As a fellow Scandinavian I know exactly what you are talking about!

Lovely stone!  Can't wait to see the ring!

Congrats on your new AVR :appl:

Congrats very pretty stone. What setting are you chosing?

Wow, thank you Acinom, Lorelei, pandabee, Sky56, fogdancer, arkieb1, Polished, LLJsmom, AprilBaby, diamondseeker2006, lioness, kalomeli, thecat and OVincze so so much for all the kind words! I know it's sort of a teeny tiny stone (for the purpose at least) by PS standards so I am surprised and touched by the amount of sympathy and understanding of my joy over my lil precious   :D

I don't know how to quote multiple sources, sorry. But:

Acinom: I love hearing from ring traditions and etiquettes from other cultures, I find it interesting how in some parts of the world the engagement ring (and therefore maybe also the engagement itself?) is placed with more value while other tend only to focus on the ring exchanged at the wedding. Btw,I just lurked your 5ct OEC and omg that is one gorgeous stone! Are you still working on that VC setting? I love the vintage feel of it.

pandabee: I laughed so hard when I saw the description. I guess it serves a purpose to not state "diamond" on the parcel, at least if the interested malicious parties are dumb enough to not get what the pseudonym translates to? :naughty:

diamondseeker2006: I received the stone already couple of weeks ago but only got to thanking David at GOG today  I asked him if they have shipped to Finland before and whether there are any other AVRs or AVCs around here that they know of. I'm not sure if they want to give that sort of information out there, I guess it could fall into trade secret category or something..? But it would be REALLY interesting to know for sure! I won't feel any less special if there are others

OVincze: It is going to be a hand forged platinum setting, about 2mm width with 0.01ct diamonds on the band creating a half eternity (I hope). The center stone is set with fishtail prongs. I would love it to have a bit of a vintagey air about it, simple enough not to become outdated in a few years time - but feminine enough to entertain me and accentuate the AVR. Big expectations, huh?

Here's one of my inspiration pictures. (I am sorry to say that I have no recollections of the rightful owner of the picture and the ring. :nono: ) Those chubby girly prongs just make me drool.

Actually, it is not teeny tiny in my opinion. A gorgeous stone does not have to be huge either. It is a matter of taste, culture, etc. I love large stones and smaller stones alike, sometimes the smaller ones really stand out. I still remember seeing an amazingly cut 30 point RB in Antwerp, that stone blew me away and it was only 30 points! My favorite yellow now that I set into a necklace is 57 points. I love that stone to pieces. Cut, cut, cut, as a result the stones speak to you and make your heart sing. I have also seen amazing 3 caraters, etc. too.

In my country, I live in Hungary I know of no vendor that carries beautifully cut stones, let alone true ideals, maybe I will be the first one, sadly initially perhaps not one person will appreciate them here, although I think people see beauty and people can learn and perhaps people will start to appreciate quality and education will hopefully spread. Either way I do not want people to have anything less than the best.

Tell me about those packages, that is so funny.:))) Whenever I order from Antwerp I sit nervously checking the computer every half an hour when delivery is expected. Last time my computer said that my package was turned back to France, well, there was a bit of a turmoil as you can imagine both here and in Antwerp as a result but strangely the package arrive about a half an hour later and I held it in my hands whereas the computer still said it was in France. Also, I go out to take over the package and I ask the driver whether ID is needed and he asks me for nothing, pretty strange but they must be thinking I ordered a book or something and everything is of course insured with Malca Amit but nothing shows what is on the inside. Shipping has become so safe these days, perhaps I should knock on wood, a few years ago I would have never even dared to order one valuable piece online let alone to have a full order shipped to me. I must admit I still get a bit nervous though.:)))

Sorry, I forgot to add that in Hungary very few women get diamond engagement rings too, when they do and they are usually from men in better financial situations, the stones they request are not larger than 30 or 40 points. My engagement ring was 58 points and people here thought it was huge.

Nothing is to big or too small! We love gorgeous diamonds of all sizes!!!!
