I am overwhelmed by all of the vendors and most of them have little in stock. I am looking for a square cushion or asscher sapphire in a purple or green. Size is flexible 3 to 5 carats. Any sightings-I would love to know

Bgray,
You aren't going to find a 3 to 5 carat sapphire, regardless of colour, just laying around in a vendor's inventory. Add the specific colours purple and green makes this less likely. Add the cushion shape or asscher cut and you get the point. You are most likely to have to request to have such a stone cut. Just as a caution, have you seen many green sapphires? They aren't a deep green but most likely to be grayish green or bluish green.

thanks Carmen: I am looking for a step cut n Emerald or Asscher OR a classic old mine cushion. Many of these gem dealers carry these modern brilliant cut stones which i dont care for. The Natural Sapphire Co seems to have the best selection but I am little afraid to buy from them

NSC has a good return policy, right? If they have what you want and don't mind knowing that they are generally more expensive, I don't see what you have to be afraid off. Customer service seems to be hit and miss and who knows if you'll be one of the luckier ones with a good experience.

good point. i dont want them for a setting just the stone. chrono: should i request a specific certificate from them if they just offer there own stating unheated?

How much does treatment matter to you? If it matters a lot, I would opt for an independent lab report (GIA, AGL, AIGS, etc). Yes, I know this sounds sacrilegious to suggest accepting their company provided report but for me, it depends on the price point as well. If you don't mind and it isn't expensive, I'm fine with it. But considering that you are looking for a 3 to 5 ct stone and it's from NSC (price wise - I'm not implying their stones are heated), I'm guessing it will cost a few $K and at that price point, I am more likely to want independent verification / proof.

yes treatment matters to me-i am looking at 7500 plus . one of the stones i am interested in has a report that says rapport de pierre preciouse edelstein bericht. i have never heard of this--is it legit?

don't discount Montana and/or Australian sapphires. in some cases you'll get both green and blue within the same stone.

No wonder the name is familiar. This looks like a memo from Christian Dunaigre's "new" independent consulting company / lab. He started out his career with AIGS, then moved on to Gubelin for 10 years before branching out on his own. I am not personally familiar with his company but based on his reputation, I would think it as very reputable.

interesting thanks-if you have any suggestions for vendors I am open. I am not a fan of modern cut sapphires (Horner etc). I love the old lumpy cushions and anything step cut. would love a square purple-y cushion.........

have you considered a cabochon or sugar loaf?
