Hi folks,

I bought this emerald cut diamond from eBay, ended up bidding more than I would have liked at just over $3.5k.

It's a 2.02 carat stone, bottom heavy (8.45*5.9 face up). I love the cut corner shape and the warmer colour but it does have some inclusions.

Would you stick or twist? For my setting I'm going for a blackened cut down bezel with a yellow gold shank. Possibly with some graduated diamonds along the band. I like the story and ease of sticking with this stone, but I don't know if the inclusions would bother me when set.

I can see 1.5 carat, cleaner stones for the same or similar price.

I like the shape. If you think those cleaner less-bottom-heavy stones would face up almost as large, then yes. But what is your recourse with this one? Return possible? Selling it would be a killer.

Inclusions are super-obvious to me and seemingly right under the table and white at least -- but that is ~ 6X on my screen at a measured 50mm across.

I hate eBay, FWIW. I would never buy anything crave-worthy on eBay for the very reason you mentioned. Was it here? Somebody once described it as "losing an auction," not winning -- since you are the person who valued the item the highest.

I think anything other than an MRB with all the data is impossible to evaluate on eBay -- and even then it's fraught as so many posts here have pointed out.

Not a diamond expert, though.

It's returnable - I have a few days to decide. I had it tested to confirm it's natural etc and was offered half it's value if I did want to sell.

That take on eBay is so right. It is a losing game. I have definitely learned a lesson here at least.

I'd be looking at around 7.5-7.7 * 5.5ish so losing about a mm in length and half a mm in width. Find it v hard to judge whether that's significant or not!

You'd be losing 16% in face-up size ("area" of the crown), if I use the middle figure of 7.6mm length for the next one. That would be visibly smaller, imo, but only if they were seen side-by-side.

You can mock them up in whatever you use -- pptx, etc. -- and see how noticeable the delta is. I can do this if you'd like but not until tomorrow.

Curious what others think.

My perception is that this gem will bug you and reduce the joy forever -- and the only reason to do this project is joy.

I really like the shape too, but those inclusions would ruin the stone for me. I would return while you still can.

My mind clean is VS, and I do not believe this stone is a VS, so it will be bother me.

What is the spec out of interest?

DK :))

This stone has a pleasing shape. It would work as a pendant or earring, but I wouldn't put it in a ring.

You don't love it. Return it.

In defense of ebay, I have gotten GREAT bargains there! The trick is to buy things you know more about than the other bidders or buyers, to be patient, and to get lucky. I bought a pair of 24K earrings made in the 2nd century BC for $69, including shipping. The seller thought they were Victorian. I bought a ring with a pair of well cut, natural, unheated sapphires in a lovely shade of purple, about a carat and a half apiece, for approximately the melt price of the setting, a lovely art deco platinum-and-diamond confection. I've found so many amazing treasures on ebay! You have to know what you're doing, and it's harder to find treasures than it was fifteen or twenty years ago, but it's still possible.

Those inclusions, in an emerald cut, would be a no go for me. I am inclusion sensitive though so you might not mind them. I assume you had some idea about them before you participated in the bidding?

HI:

Inclusions a deal breaker for me also--especially in a ring. Clarity is very important in step cuts. And I like what @LilAlex said about joy. Also something my DH said to me a long time ago bears repeating here..."I never want you to look down at your hand/ring and wonder why it was a bargain".

cheers--Sharon
