In general the African Emeralds trade at about ½ the price of the Columbian stones. The African stones tend to be cleaner than the Columbian, but usually exibit a touch of black or gray. The Zambian stones out of Africa can display a yellow-green,spinach-green,or grey-green. These stones have a wider range of color vs. Columbian, but lack the “bright” vibrant color of the Columbian.

One of the most desired color of emerald is a bluish-Green to Green, with strong to vivid saturation and medium to dark tone. Premium stones exhibit excellent transparency, with good evenness of color and minimal zoning. I attached a little pictorial to help emphasize through pic’s the diiferent hue’s,tone, and color variations in emerald.

When shopping for emeralds, prices can be all over the board. Emeralds are typically included and treated, which is why I would have a independent appraiser/gemologist evaluate the stone. I think “emeralds” are beautiful stones, but because of the demand of this gem and the current treatments on the market, I think more caution should definitely be excercised. . Most emeralds on the market today have been treated with various types of oil or resin to improve their appearance. There are also many synthetics/imitations on the market.

Like I stated above, there are many factors which involve the evaluation of this gemstone and the brief general description you included with the size, shape, and price per carat will not help. A picture will help give the PS viewing audience a better look at the stone, but pictures only go so far into the true representation of what the stone actually looks like and treatments which might be present. If I were in your shoes, spending almost $4,000, I would have a trusted independent appraiser take a look who is preferably a certified gemologist.

Excellent post, Josh. I don''t know if you know it yet or not, but you have a serious colored stone addiction. Sooner or later you''re going to end up being a dealer.

Colored Gemstone Nut:

Can you tell me where I can find a color chart on RUBIES, similar to the one you posted on Emeralds??

Thanks
Ger

CGN: thank you for that very helpful post! I''m in the learning process and getting ready to start searching for about a 2 ct. emerald to be set into a RHR, and it is somewhat difficult to find a lot of information on what to look for or be aware of when trying to find the right stone, so your post helps tremendously!

Columbian emeralds are generally colored by an impurity of chromium whereas the African emeralds generally (a dangerous word I know) get their color from vanadium I believe. A chelsea filter is useful when shopping for Columbian stones although emeralds and some other green stones from some other localities may show red under the filter as well. Vanadium-colored emeralds will be inert to the filter.

Do Muzo emeralds show red under a chelsea filter?

Thanks
