Insanity in Belgium

Obviously this is horrible and shocking and truly insane, as you put it, but I really wouldn''t call it evidence that should make anyone fearful of putting their kids in daycare. Planes crash, and we still fly. Students at school bring guns to massacre other students and we still send children to school... and so on, and so forth. Exceptional cases are tragic, but they''re certainly not the norm.

That said, my eyes welled up with tears reading the article. Exceptional, yes, but insanity is certainly right on.

Similar things could happen in a McDonald''s, a WalMart, an Amish school, etc. and have. There is NO protection against the mentally insane.

The fact that it was a day care center was really incidental IMO.

One teacher with a tazer or a firearm and the willingness and skill to use it could have prevented the whole thing.

I think we need to realize that in order to protect our children when we put them in the care of others that we need to have tight security in those places. No, you cannot prevent every single scenario, but it is not good when someone can just walk in off the street and do this. I hope it will cause schools and daycares to have tighter security. I would have thought the Amish school situation would have been a wake-up call. But that said, if someone wants to do something badly enough, they can get in even with locked doors. We just need to make it harder to at least give a few seconds to call police or security, that''s all I''m saying.

Some daycares actually have closed circuit TV and the parents can monitor their kids and their care over the internet. I think that is a good idea in this day and age (not for the scenario above, but just to be sure the caretakers are doing their jobs).
