I''m sure it''s been asked before, but which company would you suggest for ering insurance. I have a homeowners policy, but I''m not sure if I can add an ering to it? Is it better to get one w/your existing co or go with a jewlery specialist? thanks for any and all input!

hi lili

mine is added onto my renters insurance.

Lilmaria, you can add your ering to your homeowners'' insurance policy, that''s what my FI did. And since you already have a policy with them, they might give you some sort of discount. I am not sure who you are insured with, but we have Travelers'' and to add the ering to the policy, you will have to give them a copy of the apprisal report for your ring and the cost of the insurance is usually 1% of the apprisal value. some insurance may not require it but ours did. hope this helps!

Mine''s on our homeowners (state farm, I think). you might do a search re. insurance, I know there have been lots of threads on the topic over in RT or SMTR, can''t remember which though.

Mine is on our homeowner''s.

Mine is State Farm but it was too expensive to get added on to anything, it needed its own policy

lilmaria-

Might depend on your company. My ring was insured through a stand-alone policy not with the homeowner''s company; two months after the policy went into effect they sent us a letter, giving us a week''s notice they were cancelling the insurance b/c they''d made a mistake and weren''t supposed to give us the insurance if we didn''t have a homeowner''s policy with their company. So we spent that week scrambling to find another so coverage didn''t lapse.

Good luck!

Advice for you guys in searching for good insurance online. All the top insurance companies are at your fingertips on the internet. Most local agents can only quote you from the few companies that they represent. They may not offer you what is best for you financially or reliable but only what they happen to have available.

I have mine insured with Jeweler''s Mutual. Chubb is another insurance company that I know some people use for their jewelry. I wasn''t able to get Chubb because we do not have our homeowner''s insurance with them, but I have heard this rule can differ depending on the area you are in.

good luck with your choice!

mine is on our homewoner''s.

FI and i have it on our homeowners insurance. it costs us $90/year (the ring cost $11,500 ish). we did not have to have an appraisal. they ask for the type of diamond and the type of band.

we have USAA.

I have Chubb, we don''t have homeowner''s insurance with them (we live in the Washington DC metro area). The cost was very reasonable and the process easy.

Hi- funny, we were just talking about this on the Knot, so here''s a modified version of the post I put up there:

We insured our rings through a co. called Chubb Insurance. We went with a separate Chubb jewelry policy rather than add it to a homeowner''s/renter''s policy, for a few reasons:

--Some homeowner''s/renter''s policies only cover during theft or fire IN THE HOME. I am much more likely to lose my ring on a business trip or randomly throughout my daily routine, than to have someone take it off my dresser while I''m sleeping. Chubb covers loss, theft, fire, etc., ANYWHERE in the world, whether it''s your bus stop or a trip to Ireland.

--Chubb covers breakage, not just loss/destruction, which is often excluded from homeowner''s/renter''s insurance.

--Chubb has no deductible- they give you 100% of the insured amount back.

--Chubb offers a cash payout option, so whatever amount your ring is insured for, they cut you a check. OR, you can go to the jeweler of your choosing (aka the original jeweler, if you want) to replace the ring. Some homeowner''s/renter''s policies will only replace your ring at a jeweler of THEIR choosing, and as long as they replace your diamonds within a color/clarity grade of your original ring, they''ve fulfilled the terms of the policy. In other words, if your original ring was a G color stone, and the diamond they replace it later tests as an H, you''re SOL.

--I think Chubb charges between 1-3% of your insured amount per year to cover things. More than some homeowner''s/renter''s policies (We pay $211 per year for both my rings and DH''s ring), but worth it to me for flexible coverage.

I understand that some agents won''t sell jewelry insurance independent of homeowner''s insurance, but we didn''t have a problem with that.

I would love to insure with Chubb, but I have not yet found anyone in L.A. who will underwrite a stand alone policy. Anyone have any recent experience with someone who will? Thanks!

thanks for the detailed information! I called a chubb agent in our area and think i will place all of my jewlery on the policy. I have earrings from an ex boyfriend, my favorite watch and the ering. The lady was really nice and I would feel more comfortable with the insurance than without. I am worried about getting an appraisal b/c I don''t have a jewler I trust in FL and I don''t want to send all of my jewlery to ny to my sister-in-law''s jewler. Did you get more than one appraisal? Is it necessary? Thanks for the help!

Hi again- we got our stand-alone policy from an agent in Boston. I have heard people say before that they had a hard time finding an agent that would issue them a stand-alone jewelry policy, but keep looking- they are definitely out there. We didn''t have any problem- I think we found ours in the online version of the phone book.

Another nice thing about the Chubb policy is that for items under $50,000, an appraisal isn''t required. You just tell them the amount for which you want to insure the item. We used the paperwork (receipt and item description) that we received from the jeweler. We faxed the agent the paperwork, and they sent us the policy. Later, when we added my wedding ring and my husband''s ring, we just called the agent and added the extra items over the phone. Couldn''t have been simpler. Good luck!
