I have been collecting for over 11 years. Until about 4 years ago in my experience there were great and cheap overseas sources for colored gemstones. Good gems with good native cuts. Or good gems with precision cuts that went for more, but not too expensive. I do not find that to be the case anymore. Now a days it seems that selling is very hard and buying good gems on the cheap means buying pre-owned when you are lucky. Even then great gems at great prices remain unsold. Unless someone has a source they would like to share, I have found that in general there are not great sources for inexpensive good quality gems and interest in colored stones seems to have diminished. With that said I am only a collector and not someone in the trade.

Okay so...
~Start small....I started with the cheap stuff...bad cut...crappy color...etc. I learned the stones without investing to much into them.
~trust no one selling you stones, unless they have proven themselves.
I could sell you all kinds of stones that were fakes or frauds, and you would believe me when I said they are real and/or been tested. See, I have the "Certificate of Authenticity":Up_to_something::naughty::mrgreen2: with this stone, and those things don't lie!:snooty::naughty::nono:
~Assume everything is suspect, including treatment, synthetic, imitation, etc. There are tons of small asian men, who would love to sell you a synthetic cobalt spinel, as a faceted tanzanite, or maybe some iolite rough as tanzanite.
~ Most importantly....surround yourself with knowledgeable people, like on Pricescope, who can help guide you through the pitfalls and perils of the gem industry.
~Lastly....steer clear of diamonds and corundum. Both are hard to bust into the market share with. You will lose your ass trying to flip rubies and some of the sapphires. Leave that part of gem sales for the pro's, or until you are knowledgeable enough to make educated decisions with buying pricer gems
