Hi,
I am new to posting on this board and only found you a few weeks ago. I haven't actually been successful posting so I'll see if this works without trying to attach a picture. You can call me Antoinette if you like (not my actual name) but I found you because - well I like to look at diamonds, a trait I inherited from my recently deceased grandmother who was Liz Taylor only (in my eyes) more glamorous.

Her third husband (prior to their marriage) workedfor DeBeers importing & had his own monkey (imagine my childlike disappointment when I learned said monkey was no longer a part of his life). They met when her second husband bought a stone/pendant for her from him (by then he was designing). When husband #2 ran off with some girl #3 proposed with a 5 c round diamond and a love affair was born. How many 9 year olds spent their time at grandma's house being paid a dime for every errant diamond they sifted from the carpet in Grandpa's home office? Those were the days.

My current e ring is composed of that first pendant solitaire diamond he sold to #2 (a round- I'm told it is a very fine old European cut- what does that mean?) and a handful of those pesky little carpet diamonds. I knew NOTHING about setting a ring and since #3 had long given way to #4 I felt I had to use my Grandmother's jeweler friend despite the complete incongruence of our taste. She didn't listen to what I requested at all- chided me for wanting platinum ("You will be back in a year begging me to swap this for gold!") where I asked for bead set I got channel and down the list it went, the ring was so uncomfortable and every time I looked at it I wanted to scream "No Channel Set!!" You couldn't even see the diamonds- that we had it reset before the wedding.
Figuring anything would be better than what I had I just described something simple and the guy filled in the rest- no one asked how high I wanted it to be or told me I could have a single or split shank- I was clueless and planning a huge wedding (event planning I knew plenty about). I just described a ring and the people my dad recommended made it. My parents believed it would cause a great scandal if I pointed out the difference between the ring I asked for and the one I got to the jeweler (remember Grandma was a regular and a friend of this "artiste") so they offered to help us get it reset as long as it was never mentioned and since we had blown our wad with the first setting and granny was never the wiser.

Recently We lost granny and because I am the one who always admired things that shine she left me her ring and a few other baubles. I told my Mom to wear it for as long as it gives her comfort but eventually it will come my way (my mom has never even wanted a 1 carat diamond ring so it is purely sentimental to her-let's face it, it's sentimental to all of us. Did you know that you can have your remains made into a diamond?? Q
I don't want to muck it up this time- I can't muck it up this time. So I'm here to spend some time learning and getting advice before I move into the choosing phase.
What will I do with this diamond? My choices as I see it-reset my current Ering (about 1.4c or 1.04? I think with another 1.5 in little diamonds) and wear the sparkler as a right hand ring or pendant. OR upgrade, wear the sparkler as an e ring and have my current Ering made into a halo set (or other) necklace pendant and a set of diamond studs (maybe halo set as well) so I have a whole sparkly set that I can wear as often as I like. Budget will be of concern but by the time mom parts with it we should be able to save up a chunk of jewelry change.
What kind of settings would a round 5 carat diamond look good in? It is in a yellow gold bezel with some strange almost Hebrew looking squiggles on it right now that isn't my vibe (reset for husband #4). I like white gold or platinum (what 8 have now) vintage, halo, split shank, Art Deco, Edwardian, gorgeous side views, cushion cuts, ummmmmm I don't early know what I like haha.

I will try to include pictures in a reply if I get this text up. I started wearing my Ering on my right hand and my two wedding bands on my left and I am liking that better than my old set up of all three rings on my left hand- it was uncomfortable and I think it detracted from the diamond. The solitaire kind of gets lost in the little diamonds.I think it could have been done with less metal to show off the diamonds but no one explained if there was a reason it was done as it was. Thanks for making it through my post :)

Hi, welcome, do post some pics I am sure everyone would love to see your bling. I'd love to see the Old European Cut - that is an Antique cut of diamond that existed before Round brilliants they are usually round or off round and have bigger chunkier facets than Round modern Brilliants do.

Re: Intro from a newbie and some questions about granny blin

Yes, I also would love to see some pictures. It would be very hard to give opinions without actually seeing what you currently have :wavey:

Re: Intro from a newbie and some questions about granny blin

Loved reading your story but like the others, I must agree:

Welcome to PS!!! :wavey: We actually have several people here with 4-6 ct diamonds and you'll find plenty of excellent advice on settings! There are a few master ring makers around, and we can direct you to the ones that make the styles you love. I love your story and the fact that you have some special pieces from your grandmother! I would set the 5 ct stone as an e-ring, but I'd probably reset the current diamond in another ring, such as a three stone, so that you can wear it either on the right or left hand. There will be times that you don't want to wear the large diamond. I'd work on saving for the setting and then just getting the stone from your mom if she is not going to wear it. No point in a diamond sitting in a safe deposit box for years.

Here is the 5 ct thread:

Acinom's setting by Victor Canera would be an outstanding choice for a round stone. Her pictures on the thread above don't show the french cut sides very well, so here is her other thread:

Oh, I can't wait to see the pics! :)) PS'ers have great taste and can steer you towards a great setting for your grandmother's bling!

Awesome story!

Re: Intro from a newbie and some questions about granny blin

Ok let's hope that picture posting goes better tonight- I did try before. I hadn't read the "how to" take pictures of your diamond thread so I apologize if these are all wrong. I'll take some pictures of my current ring and try to do a better job with that. Thanks for e info about the European cut- a jeweler told me that it was a very one old European cut stone- like O said I had no clue what he meant- O just thought it looked round- shows you what I know :)
And now for some glam granny bling

Re: Intro from a newbie and some questions about granny blin

Almost have the Ering pics up but they are all cell phone pics as you can tell :). I can remember granny telling me she had a slightly smaller but better quality diamond but at the time I wanted this one because I always loved her wearing it.

Re: Intro from a newbie and some questions about granny blin

You wanted pictures so be careful what you wish for- of course none of these rings have been cleaned in ages :( I tnk I might have a pic of the 5ct stone that will show its cut better Ill check.

Diamond seeker- I love all of them! What shape are the diamonds in the three stone? I can see how some of the settings could accommodate a round even if they are shown with another shape. Prettttty

Re: Intro from a newbie and some questions about granny blin

That is one seriously honking ring!! It is very beautiful, but I can see how the style might not be to your taste. It's very different from the style of your own rings. Personally, I would be tempted in the first instance to reset it into a plain solitaire & see how you can live with it for a while. The stone will look completely transformed when it has more light going through. And you might decide its not for you after all, so I would save the expense of a really fancy setting until you've lived with it for a while :wavey:

I think you are referring to Yenny's three stone with the octagonal settings? If so, her stones are all rounds! I love that ring and would be thrilled to have one like it! They would be able to get two matched sides to go with your center stone, too.

You have great potential with that huge diamond! That will be fun to reset! Your rings are beautiful!

Re: Intro from a newbie and some questions about granny blin

Thank you,
Ya I wonder what the diamond in granny's ring looks like under all that metal. The original setting was also not really my cup of tea but it showed more of the diamond and then had a thick band with rows of melee diamonds across it- just a lot of diamonds- as many as you could get on there I think- lol. Yes I really like the octogenarian three ring as well as the other - hmm not sure how to describe it but the other three ring. I wonder of they would have to find European cut stones- I suppose everything doesn't have to match. So is the European cut still considered a round diamond? Can anyone tell of the larger stone is European or regular brilliant cut?

Re: Intro from a newbie and some questions about granny blin

Can you put up some really well lit, macro shots of the big diamond?

Re: Intro from a newbie and some questions about granny blin

Yep, a clear, bright, close up picture of the 5ct would help us identify the cut. Making sure it's clean for the photoshoot will help, too.

An Old European Cut is another flavor of round.

Welcome to PS, and thanks for the pretty pictures.

Re: Intro from a newbie and some questions about granny blin

I'll work on it. I don't have the ring (mom is wearing it) but I have some more close ups from that day and ill try to take some more when I see it next. Not sure if I can dig up a real cama, we are cell phone dependant :)

Re: Intro from a newbie and some questions about granny blin

Hmmmm now that I see them all up there I don't think those pictures are any better. I'm going to have to take new photos I think.
I do dear if there will be a bunch of Schmutz in the bezel setting when the bust that baby free. Do you think they can save the setting for my aunt to put something else in (she is a master wire bender and specializes in silver and black pearls) I think she would get a kick out of it but I would guess the setting will need to be cut open or something to pry that sucker loose.

Re: Intro from a newbie and some questions about granny blin

Thanks for the updated pictures! They are a little clearer. I think the stone would look nice in a simple solitaire, perhaps with pave on the band if you like that look. The cut looks like a modern round brilliant of average cut quality. It might be a little brighter in a more open setting. An open setting would make it easier to clean. Anyway, it's huge and I'm sure it will be stunning in whatever setting you choose.

Edited because I forgot to answer your other question. It is possible but difficult to reuse a bezel setting. You do have to destroy either the bezel or the stone to remove the stone, but the bezel can often be rebuilt by a skilled benchperson.
