My friend has a 10 plus carat irradiated diamond his father left him. His dad died 10 years ago and we have no clue what he paid for this diamond and he wore it in a ring but it is now loose because my friend sent it to GIA. He has no clue what it is worth.

I was hoping a knowledgeable PSer could either direct me to the right person to ask i.e. trusted appraiser and/or give me their thoughts on this diamond. I am posting the GIA grading report and a photo. I have video but cannot add it here.

I plan on contacting Adam at OWD tomorrow but in the meantime was wondering if anyone here could chime in with their thoughts. Thanks!

WOW love the diamond.

That is going to be a tricky task figuring out the value.
I would contact Neil who posts here as Denverappraiser

Thanks Karl.

That is a beauty!!!

What a pretty color!

I'd get it recut for optimum light performance.
Yes, it will fall under 10 ct. and is a terrible idea if you intend to sell it.

Still, I'd to it if I was going to keep and enjoy it.

(But, where in the world could I wear a 9.1 ct honker?)

Looks like my tiny green diamond.

I'd send it to brdiangavindiamonds to get it recut for optimum light performance.
There is plenty of weight to spare and it's not worth millions of bucks like a 10 ct fully-natural (material and color) Fancy Deep Green FCD would be.
It's a tad on the deep side so it may not lose much diameter, unless the girdle was placed too high or low.
Unfortunately there is not way to know this from a GIA FCD report since they never report Crown and Pavilion specs in degrees or height.
A side view pic would reveal this.

Yes, it will fall under 10 ct. and a recut is a terrible idea if you intend to sell it.
Few buyers understand good cut (and are therefor willing to pay for it) but every buyer understands carat weight.

If I was going to keep and enjoy it I'd get it recut.
(But, where in the world could I wear an 8.9 ct honker?)

That is a beautiful colour! Like the others, recut would be my priority if I was gonna keep it within the family. If planning to sell, then maybe leaving it over 10ct+ is the way to go.

Thanks Kenny, Aprilbaby and bmfang. My friend is probably going to sell it as he won't wear a 10 carat diamond. LOL I could rock that baby and I would get it recut if it were my diamond.

I have reached out to Neil and Adam.

In the meantime you might want to google around and see if there is anything comparable for sale to give you an idea of retail value. A quick search for 'irradiated green diamond' did yield some results. You should pay closer attention to the listings of sellers who are disclosing the treatment properly.

While it is cut a bit deep, I don't see a good enough reason to recut it based on the photo.
A dip under 10ct would greatly reduce the value and it looks good to me in the photo.

Thanks so much for your additional input Karl. Appreciate it. I heard back from both Adam and Neil and my friend will be contacting Neil today. Excited to hear what the outcome is.

Thanks very much for chiming in Bryan. I did some googling re irradiated green diamonds but (and I am the first to admit my googling skills may not be wonderful) was not able to find any comparable stones that are near 10 carats in size. So hopefully Neil can give my friend the information he needs to go forward with selling this diamond.

My friend sold it for more than he was offered by my Diamond trade person. Happy ending for T.

Some types of radiation only effect the color at the surface of a diamond. I think checking to see how deep the color went would be a must If you wanted to keep the color during a recut.

In the past you could hardly give away low color "Cape" diamonds, that's why some were irradiated to change the color to a fancy. These days low color diamonds have great value as old cuts. If this diamond were mine, I'd jump for joy if it turned out the color was only skin deep. I'd have it recut into an 8+ct OEC in a heartbeat. =)2

Too big you think? My darling wife thought her 5.05ct OEC would last her forever. Last week she asked me if they made 8ct lab diamonds. It's true, DSS does exist! :eek-2::eek-2::eek-2:

Well, they make 7 ct ones!
