Is 2 ct round brilliant solitaire too big for hospital environment?

Hello PSers,

My first post! I'm a long time PS stalker. I very much appreciate the information here.

Two questions:

1. Would a 2 ct in 6 prong Tiffany style (Vatche U113/BGD knife edge/WF knife edge custom to be more like Tiffany) be too much/blingy for hospital setting?

I previously wore a 1 ct round brilliant in 4-prong and I think I got maybe 5-8 comments about how blingy my ring was in 10 years. I don't want to draw attention to myself and at the same, I love a bigger spread than what a 1-ct gives. I did think that maybe 1.5-1.7 ct would be a good balance, but I don't want to think about upgrading in 10-15 years.

2. Would a 2 ct in 6 prong in Tiffany style setting have issues with gloves? My previous 1 ct 4-prong solitaire did not have any issues with gloves.

My ring size: 4-4.25
Wedding band: thin plain knife edge wedding band.
Metal: both will be platinum.
Frequency of wear: daily (i only remove my ring when working out with weights or equipment). I don't remove my rings for showers or for bed.

Thank you for your input!

I’ve worn 2 carat equivalent rings that were cubic zirconium just to try it out. Hated it cuz it stuck out too high for me even with a lower setting. For me, the sweet spot is a 1.2 - 1.5 carat if I’m doing an MRB. I’d suggest getting something like that from Amazon or Berricle to try it out and see how you like it.

Here’s an example just to try out:

For me it was a no-go with gloves, seemed like 1.5 was where it topped off, due to height of the setting- i ended up going a bit smaller than that, but honestly, I just wear my diamond wedding band a lot of the time at work. I'd recommend getting a low-cost CZ in a similar setting and trying for yourself like Hwinty says above.

What specialty are you in and what country?

I personally am unbothered by whether others think it's too blingy or not. It will give patients something nice to look at to cheer them up, and your colleagues something pretty to admire in boring meetings! If someone will judge you for a 2 carat they'll judge you for a 1.5 carat, so don't let this influence your decision.

However, the practicality issue is worth considering. Will you be in and out of gloves all day? In a fast-paced environment like emergency medicine, or can you take your time to wriggle out of them carefully eg dermatology? If the former, a 2 carat in a sticky-uppy setting would probably get in the way. The same in low setting, not so much - but this may not be what you want. The suggestion of finding a similar Berricle setting to try is a really good one.

Go for the 2 ....you'll regret it if you don't and 1.7 is the same as 2.0 honestly. you'll figure out the rest

I would get the 2 ct and not wear it to work. It’s a pain with gloves and washing hands.

Just wear what you like not what people think!
2ct is good. Do not go lower if your heart was set for it

I don't think it being too blingy is the issue, but if you want to wear it all the time and need to pull gloves on and off all day, it may be an issue if you are setting it in a pronged solitaire. Maybe it wouldn't be so much of an issue with a bezel as those can often me made to sit a bit lower and you don't have the prongs to deal with. Buy the cheap CZ rings in a couple of stone sizes and see how large you can go without it being a PIA. It doesn't sound like you want to leave it at home, and you really want something to wear pretty much 24/7 so make sure it works before making a mistake on a permanent setting.

For those of you who wear your rings with gloves, don’t the gloves leave smear marks in the diamonds?

To answer the question, nothing is too blingy if you like blingy…. As for comfort I personally find anything above 6mm to be annoying for daily wear so am not the one to ask :)

My daughter is a RN. She wear a (size 4.75) 2.05ct 6 prong ring to work.

I wear 1.5 ct in the hospital. No trouble getting gloves on (the setting it the vatché u113). I think 2 ct is just fine but may want to keep in mind the population you work with.

To answer @oncrutchesrightnow - I havent noticed smears from gloves. We use powderless nitrile gloves at my hospital. The hand sanitizer makes a mess, though.

Rings will rip the gloves plus all the hand sanitizer/ washing. Save the ring for off the job.

I wouldn't want to wear a stone that big at work. I'm a nurse in a hospital - Many of the nurses I work with either wear a smaller CZ ring at work or a silicone band. Gloving on and off all day gets really tiring with any ring, but especially with a large ring that's as high off the finger as a 2ct will be. Even if you get a smooth, low setting it is still going to protrude and snag on gloves and pull uncomfortably the entire time the glove is on

The settings are fine, definitely not too much even if the stone is 2ct (I have the WF setting, modified.)

The glove issue may bother you, or it may not. You'd have to try it on to see.

Nitrile powderless gloves and no smear but still tears sometimes and get sick of hand washing soap. Still vote for getting BIG but not wearing to work.

The setting determines comfort for me, the general patient socioeconomic situation determines the size for me. I frequently turn my ring so that it’s on my palm side and that makes it not catch on gloves and leaves just the plain underside visible to the patient.

Lots of parts to your question.

If you use the Purell-type hand sani that evaporates like pure ethanol, then no worries. If it's the gunky, lotion-y stuff -- I have no answer.

Agree that height matters for a prong-set. Spouse wore her solitaire ~ 1.15 cts (I couldn't swing the 1.25) for decades taking gloves off and on all day, every day (but not in an OR setting).

Vis-a-vis wanted or unwanted attention: I was surprised to learn that spouse got frequent oohs and ahs about her diamond (decent with a GIA report but no excellents, I am sure, and it it would be the "before" picture in any PS upgrade scenario) in a $90 (?) 14K YG placeholder mounting than she ever did for her (now-retired) Kashmir-look Edwardian unheated vivid-blue sapphire right-hand ring. For a certain clientele, it's the size of your colorless RBC -- that's all they will see. A handful have told her "You have nice jewelry!" which she inferred meant they saw the earrings or "other" ring.

One colleague always had her inch-long marquise tied into her scrub bottoms like Wonder Woman's belt :mrgreen2:.

Thank you MillieLou and everyone else for your input. They were all very very helpful.

I am in the US and my specialty is internal medicine. I am a hospitalist (I see inpatient/hospital patients only). I have given this a lot of thought and you are right. My heart is set on a 2 ct and the only reason I was leaning towards 1.5-1.8 ct was because of potentially drawing attention to myself at work. And you are right MillieLou, if someone is going to judge me with a 2 ct diamond, they are going to judge me with a 1.7 ct diamond. Plus, I have a life outside of work and will one day retire and I do not want to upgrade ever. This will be my one ring to rule them all (at least in diamond form anyway). When I had the 1 ct 4-prong set high, I would turn my diamond around so it's not easily visible.

And gloves did not bother me (my 4-prong ripped maybe 5-10 set of gloves in the last 5 years). And we have nonpowder nitrile gloves except for a few times during covid where some rooms were stocked with nonpowder latex due to shortages... Oh the days of covid.

Great idea on buying a CZ to get a feel of how a 2 ct would look and feel on my hand. I will do look for one now.

THANK YOU everyone again!

Wildcat03, I just adore your e-ring and set!!! Thank you so much for your input.

I don't work in a hospital but I am in health care and I work hands-on with patients. I have to be very careful not to scratch people with my 1ct. After the wedding I plan on only wearing the band to work. When I wear gloves I haven't ripped through any of them, but I'm not always wearing gloves.

That's what they all say! by the time you are retired you'll be rocking a 4ct!

LOL... I truly don't feel I will do that... and I will say, there is nothing wrong with a woman in her 60s rocking a 4 ct or any other carat size for that matter. Really any woman of any age. :cool2:
