I’m cancelling my 5 stone ring with Brian Gavin Designs. The ring has missed my 10 year anniversary, my birthday and it won’t be here for the holidays. I don’t see a point trying to rush it any more.
BGD has done up 3 CADs and none of them came back with the changes I requested. I wasn’t advised when I made the request that what I wanted was not possible or you can't change their stock designs.
I was very detailed and specific with what I wanted. I sent lots of pictures, including my own ring, and links from 2 PSers (Fire and Ice’s Nightgale and kcoursolle’s U prong). I don’t want very pinched prongs or scalloped stones. I wanted the metal to come out past the griddle of the stone, like the side view of mommylawyer’s ring or my own ring.
After seeing my Nightingale with pinched prongs, I spoke with Leslie last week and described what I wanted. She said I wanted the U prong setting and not the Nightingale. I went ahead with her recommendation and changed the design. When CAD came back, I asked for the width of the gallery and if it was wider than the stone (the stones are 4.44mm / 0.33ct). Nope; it’s not. It’s only 3.2mm wide as they state on their website.
I really don’t understand how it’s 1.2mm smaller when I asked for the gallery it to be bigger than 4.44mm… Also, this doesn’t line up to when Jamie told me the band shanks are customized to every ring. Wouldn’t the same apply to gallery widths for larger stones?
I tried to be as clear as possible since this is “final sale” for me until I upgrade the stones. I’m Canadian. I’m paying about 26% more on the exchange rate. I’m budgeting at least 13% to 30% for duties, taxes and brokerage fees (minimum sales tax is 13% and $100 on Fedex brokerage fees). I’m hoping duty is waive because this is made in the US. I once paid taxes twice on a dress because I exchanged it for size and it wasn’t the same item I was importing back into Canada. So getting the ring reset isn’t an option since I may need to pay for import duties and taxes again. For context, $5,200USD will be around $7,500-8,600CAD for me once I factor in exchange and taxes.
I received an email from Jamie this afternoon that they are billing me for the designer’s time to create the CADs. Is this normal for jewelry designers to bill for their time if they don’t tell clients in advance that they can’t create what the client wants and they don’t recommend the right setting for the client?
FWIW, I’ve been a small business owner and consultant and I’m all for charging for your time. But I would have told the client “No, I can’t/won’t do it” before I took on the job or directed the client to the right solution that met their needs. I'm just stunned.
I’d appreciate some advice before replying.
