Is it possible to resize this ring?

Hi all, you helped me pick out my fiance's engagement ring last December, and in a few weeks we're getting married! But I ran into another problem and thought I should seek your help once again.

I injured my ring finger a few months ago, and it caused my knuckle to swell up a good amount, which unfortunately coincided with the time that I was picking out my own wedding ring. I have big knuckles anyway, but I didn't realize how much it swelled up at the time until my ring came in and it was way too large for my finger. The jeweler added a couple of bars in it to make it fit better, and it works for now and will work for the wedding, but since I'll be wearing this for the rest of my life, I'd prefer to get it fitted a little better.

It was a size 10 when I ordered it, the bars made it a size 9. I'm worried my knuckle may still go down more too since my other ring finger is smaller than it. The ring is platinum and has 6 small diamonds evenly spaced throughout the ring. The diamonds are my biggest concern about resizing it.

Just let me know if there is any hope for getting it to fit right or if I should just get used to a loose ring with bars inside of it! Also, how do you like my ring?? Thanks :)

Love it! I think it's probably best to speak to a jeweller about resizing especially as the diamonds are inset, you don't want them to get loose by altering the shape of the shank.

Hi @emac11 -

I see what you mean; there's a great deal of space, it seems, making the ring stand well out from your finger.

I'm not sure if you can alter it to fit without having it remade, but even if you did, it would still be standing out from your finger, so it will *look* as tho it doesn't fit - even if it did.

If you decide to have it remade, can I suggest a hinged ring? You open it prior to sliding it over your knuckle, then it snaps shut once on. I don't know a lot about them and how they're constructed, but I've seen a few, and they certainly address your problem.

Maybe just something to think about. Good luck!

LOVE your ring!!!

That being said, sizing one of these rings is actually harder than trying to size a regular eternity band due to the spacing of the diamonds. They go all the way around the ring in even increments (I have been trying to convince my husband to let me get him a similar style with princess cuts), so trying to size it down a full size would result in two of the diamonds being slightly unevenly spaced on the band. The sizing bars work best when there is only about a quarter to half-size max room needed to be taken up. What you're wearing does not look comfortable at all.

Another issue is your knuckle of course. Did you injure it? It appears as though you've got a difference of at least a full size between your knuckle and the area where you wear your ring. As mrs-b said, an adjustable shank ring would actually be the best solution to your ring issue, although it would result in the loss of diamonds on one side of the shank, and of course if the ring spins, you will see the sure-fit portion.

Thanks for the help, all.

Yes, I injured my finger at the gym about a month before it came time to start ring shopping. I didn't realize the knuckle was so swollen at the time because it didn't hurt too much, but it was difficult to get a ring over it. The knuckle has come down a good amount since then and I worry it'll come down more.

I guess I'll just wear the ring oversized on my finger for now with the metal bars. I tried it out yesterday and it wasn't too uncomfortable, even if it may look a little odd to some people. The ring was not cheap so I don't want to get it remade yet and spend that much more on it. Maybe eventually I'll talk to a jeweler about remaking it, but I'd hate to lose the appearance of the evenly spaced out diamonds.

Let's just hope my finger doesn't get any smaller or I might have to re-injure it!

If anyone else has any suggestions or thoughts, let me know. :)

Very nice ring! If you arent able to resize it i wonder if a horseshoe insert or beads would feel more secure to you than the bars. My friend with large knuckles swears by horseshoe inserts.
