Is it safe to sand down the width of ER band?

Hi Everyone,

Just another question regarding the width of the ER band.

I bought my ER from an online jeweller without ever having seen the band. The jeweller told me the width (i.e. the thickness from top to bottom of the band) is 2.5mm when in actual fact, is 2.9mm. This bothers me because rings tend to make my fingers develop a 'love handle' look when the band is too wide. My ideal width for the band is 2mm.

So I was thinking of changing the band altogether, but when speaking with a jeweller today, he said it may be possible to sand down the width. I've never heard of this practise and am wondering the following:

1) Is it safe
2) Will the end result still be aesthetically appealing?
3) Will a 2mm wide band be safe/strong enough to support a 2ct RB?

My current setting is a the plain Tiffany style knife prong with a 2ct RB.

Also, is it common practice to sell your unwanted band to a jeweller?

Thanks for any help in advance!

Hi :wavey: ,

So you expected 2.5mm and you got 2.9mm? Did you contact the seller?

Yeah, you can sell anything to a jeweller that he wants to buy - just make sure you are happy with the price, sometimes you are better off hanging onto something for a future project if the cash offered is measly.

2mm is a fine width for any stone, but I am cautioned if the jeweller mentioned 'sanding' down anything. It doesn't sound like a great choice of words.

Hi Steal, :wavey:

Thanks for answering me.

TBH, it was quite a rush when we got the ring to go o/s to claim back GST and the seller had a no refund policy on the band :((
Also, it never occurred to me that the band may be over 2.5mm (I know, very silly of me not to check). It was only until yesterday when I was at the jeweller with a friend I had it measured to find it wasn't 2.5mm. And it's way beyond the time frame to call and kick up a fuss. Oh well...important lesson for next time. :(sad

LOL...I most likely won't be going with this jeweller (cos his bands are quite overpriced, even for a B&M), I just wanted to know if this practice was safe. I guess he either thought I was totally dumb to use layman terms like that or he is really questionable
