One of my Sri Lankan friends gave me a heads up on a "special color" and "unusually vibrant" ~2.5ct sapphire.
It was uncertified, but we knew it was natural and unheated. The origin was a mystery however.
The color was crazy though. We agreed that it didn't look like a typical Sri Lankan, Madagascar, Winza or Burmese Pink. We were stumped.
Whatever. The price was right and I snapped it up.
We sent it to the lab and, to both of our surprise, it came back as Tanzania. Suddenly it dawned on me: it reminds me of Mahenge Spinel.
It would make sense since spinel and sapphire typically co-occur in the same mine. I've just never heard of such a beast.
Is "Mahenge Sapphire" a thing?
**It's more vibrant and etherial than the photos or videos suggest, but this is what the camera picked up. Maybe I can get better photos/videos later if anyone is interested.
