Is "Mahenge Sapphire" a thing?

One of my Sri Lankan friends gave me a heads up on a "special color" and "unusually vibrant" ~2.5ct sapphire.

It was uncertified, but we knew it was natural and unheated. The origin was a mystery however.

The color was crazy though. We agreed that it didn't look like a typical Sri Lankan, Madagascar, Winza or Burmese Pink. We were stumped.

Whatever. The price was right and I snapped it up.

We sent it to the lab and, to both of our surprise, it came back as Tanzania. Suddenly it dawned on me: it reminds me of Mahenge Spinel.

It would make sense since spinel and sapphire typically co-occur in the same mine. I've just never heard of such a beast.

Is "Mahenge Sapphire" a thing?

**It's more vibrant and etherial than the photos or videos suggest, but this is what the camera picked up. Maybe I can get better photos/videos later if anyone is interested.

...It's also wildly fluorescent:

Sapphire/Ruby and Spinel are normally found together. Montana being a notable exception. Only produces corundum.

Tanzania produces all three. No disrespect, but this is not unusual in the least bit.

Pretty stone.

No disrespect taken! It was just a new thing for me ;)2

I just hadn't heard of or seen it before. I guess Mahenge Spinel just got all the press.

Thanks for the clarification!

What a beautiful gem and a wonderful find.

Not sure why this was reported, as I don't think the comment was meant as a sales pitch, but rather to see if we're interested in more photos.
