Is my ring REAL?!?!

Bought a regular plain gold band ring from some fancy jeweler for $1,000 (thought I would go all out when it came to the wedding ring). If I remember correctly it is a 6mm band.

It has some funky smell to the band, a metallic smell almost like copper.
It also leaves a green tint on my finger after wearing it for longer then 24 hours.
It also has some silver spots around the rim/edges where it almost looks like the gold is wearing off, as if it were plated.

How would I go about telling if my ring is truly gold? So far im not too happy with this ring for paying a grand!

Goldman - You should probably take the ring in to a local appraiser and have it looked at. Best of luck.

What is that going to cost me? Any quick tricks to tell if it is real?

HI:

Take the ring for a "proper" cleaning and examination by an appraiser. From the sound of your posts, whatever the cost, it will be worth peace of mind.

cheers--Sharon

So lets say it is just gold plated, is there something I can do? Refund? Replacement w/ a real gold ring?

That's probably something you will need to discuss with your vendor

if its not real gold try and get a refund and take your money elsewhere. no jeweller should be selling something as gold if its not

You would have to speak with your vendor to find out about a replacement or refund. Ideally they would offer you one. Good luck!!

Of course, discuss it with your vendor. Do you still have a receipt? Does it specify "carat" gold? Is the ring stamped or are any markings present?

It sounds like its maybe "Gold Filled", But you might be hypoallergenic which means you might be allergic the metal because it might contain some Nickel or it might be under 14K gold.. I would clean the ring with some soap and leave it overnight, afterwards if it still has that copper smell then its probably fake. But since this is an old post you have probably figured it out, if not Good Luck!
