Is there golden ratio of ring size to centre stone to melee?

I don't know if anyone has wondered this - but when you're constructing a halo, is there a certain ratio or standard size that you would go for in order to

a. showcase your centre stone and not overwhelm it, and
b. maximise finger coverage?

I'm talking about single halos, and not those special ones where the halo constructs a flower or etc!

Personally, I have an 8mm stone and was wondering if I should do 1.2mm or 1.5mm melee diamonds on a 16mm inner diameter ring (which makes me a size 5.5-6, I think)!

1.5 mm seems a bit large for an 8 mm stone. My current project utilizes 1.1 mm to 1.5 mm diamond melees for a 10 x 8 mm oval, to be made for a size 4.5 ring. You might be able to pull off 1.5 mm but I think 1.2 mm will help the stone pop more.

It's funny, I was googling golden mean yesterday, and couldn't quite figure out how to work it, but I was wondering about side stones.

It depends on what look you are going for. You should probably search halo on PS and read the specs of the ones you like. It also depends on your finger size, a big halo on a 4 finger may look excessive. But it's all preference.

Here's a picture of my 6.8 mm stone with 10 point diamonds around it. I believe a 10 pointer is 3mm. The finger is a size 8, so when it's done it's a lot of coverage. Super sparkly diamonds and setting, purchased from IDJ. I highly recommend their halos!

It depends to some extent on what you like. Some people don't like halo stones too big, others do & don't feel they overpower the center stone. iLander's suggestion to check out PS rings that attract you is great.

iLander, that ring still makes me want to find you & grab it off your finger! It's about the prettiest ring I ever saw in my entire life.

Laurie, you are so nice! I was feeling down yesterday, and your comment made my day! :P If it helps any, I truly treasure my ring and wear it almost every day, it's not sitting alone in a box somewhere.

But you are one of the only people in the world that I would loan it to . . . :D

iLander, this is so beautiful! I saw a few of these on my travels through PS, but they only look good (to my eye) on round stones so this sort of setting is ruled out for me.. Thanks for the specs, and I'll continue my constant travels through PS to check them out!

Just out of curiosity, did you get a pre-made mount or custom?

Re: Is there golden ratio of ring size to centre stone to me

There's a thread here about Gypsy's plain shank halo that she had remade with smaller melee. The smaller melee make her center stone "pop" more (you can see the original ring on page 1, and the resulting new halo on page 6, and a side by side comparison on page 7 of just the halos)

The size of the melee really depends on the look you are going for. I think many people consider 1 1.5 mm to be "average", and anything below and above that to be "small" or big enough to start looking more like a cluster ring.

I especially love cluster rings with colored center stones. Colored center stones I feel don't compete with bigger melee in a cluster ring, and the larger white melee gives a bigger white backdrop to show off the color of the center stone. If the center is a white diamond, however, I prefer standard or smaller melee because the center stone is the same color, and I don't want the halo to compete with the center white diamond. Just a personal choice.
