Is this a low setting ring?

I am thinking of having them modify this setting to make the diamond set higher in the prongs. I heard this will make the diamond appear larger. Can they have longer prongs and set the diamond higher to give it that illusion or will that look bad?

Not related I'm, but I'm also concerned about the eternity band hitting the prongs. Can I modify this setting in a way to accommodate for the eternity band?

I don’t know if it is a low setting. I personally like the setting a lot, I think the proportions are great. You have to love it though

it is not a low setting since you can see the space between the bottom of the ring and the diamond...

I wouldn’t consider this a low setting. Seems medium height.

I wouldn’t raise your diamond up so high that it knocks on things just to make it bigger. Really high set diamonds can be high maintenance and are more prone to bumps and snagging

I honestly don’t think high settings do much to make a diamond look bigger. I think if you would like a larger diamond that’s a separate issue to me

You could raise the setting, but it might look odd with the upward sloped shoulders. If you want that, you'd ask the jeweler to use a mounting head with a stem on it.

Do you have a picture of what that would like like?

You can have them retip the prongs and raise the stone. IMHO, it does not make the stone look bigger, just increases the amount of things you hit with it. If you want the stone to look bigger, most people would use a halo.

The only way that I could see making this work with a band would be to remove the head, add a donut below it and then re-insert the head. That is a lot of work and may not be worth it on this setting.

I don't understand this. Did you mean that you can't see the space? I do see some space between the culet and the bottom of the basket. Not a lot, but it does seem to be there.

I don't think its a low setting. I would call it average height and honestly, if you want something higher, I'd look for one instead of trying to remake the one you have without knowing the outcome. I actually like your setting very much and doubt having the diamond set higher will really make it look larger.

As for the eternity band, it depends how tall it is whether it will hit the prongs. A very dainty one might work, otherwise, yes, you might have an issue.

that was a typo... I meant it's NOT a low setting

Is a cathedral style typically taller?

It depends on the ring. This setting looks lower than what you have

Why dont you put it in a halo setting? That will make it "appear" larger and give you a lot more finger coverage. I'm afraid these
little things you're talking about doing are just bandaids and arent going to really "fix" the problem.

I hope you don't mind, @missjenny , if I interrupt this thread long enough to say Hi to @rockysalamander :wavey: who responded to you at post #7 (she has really been missed here on PS because it's been awhile since she posted & she is always so helpful and informative!)

Aww. thanks @MollyMalone ...I think my life has calmed down a bit to provide more time to spend on PS. Its great to e-see you!.

I agree! @rockysalamander, you have been missed! Welcome back and I am glad to hear you are well and life has settled down!

@missjenny, a higher setting will not make a stone look larger unfortunately. A halo does wonders though.

May I ask the size of your ring? I do know what you are saying with regard to it looking larger. Also, i think the way the mounting is attached to the shank, another head could be attached or, the prongs can be made longer so there can be more space between the culet and bottom of the setting. I wouldn’t go with a ton of space, but I totally see what you are trying to accomplish and the “feel” it will give to you. I have a ring that actually is more of the way you want it and while it wasn’t what I had asked my jeweler to do when he set it, I feel it gives it a more prominent look and it has not been an issue with banging it. When it is on my finger it doesn’t look too high at all. I have the same mounting for another diamond where it is set totally within the mounting and it is more squatty. While I think the ring is very nice as is, I do know what you are wanting to accomplish.

May I ask the size of your ring? .
It's a 2.25 ct; her ring size is a 6 -- pics here in this thread:
