Hello,

This seems to be a common question, and a little difficult to answer, but I figured I''d throw it out there. I was shopping for an E-ring for my lady this weekend, and found what I thought was a nice looking stone at a reputable establishment. The specs are below:

Asscher 1.19 carat
G
VS1
Depth 72.5
Table 62
Very Thick Girdle
No Culet
Good Polish
Very Good Symmetry
No Fluorescence
$6K

Now, I am pretty sure that the G color and VS1 clarity are ok, it''s really the cut, polish and girdle with which I am perplexed. The ring looks lovely under the lights (white background) and in the window with a nice northern exposure. Inspection with the 10x mag did not yield much that I could see. Is this price ok? Do the cut specs make sense? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. My GF has nice slender fingers, not too long (size 6 ring). She "...likes angles [no round] and shiny things..." Given the shiny factor and size considerations, am I better off with a Princess Brilliant? Kind of all over the place, I know.

Proposal imminent.

Thanks.

I''m not an expert, so I can''t comment on the angles, but I''ll say that G/VS1 seems like a pretty good color/clarity and combo for a step cut stone. You don''t have quite as much color/clarity leeway as you do for a brilliant, so I probably wouldn''t recommend going much lower than H-I/VS1-VS2.

As for your girl''s tastes, I think brilliant cuts generally appeal to more people than step cuts, so be careful. Is there any way to make sure she likes an Asscher? If she likes angular shapes and lots of sparkle, she may prefer a princess. That''s not to say an Asscher doesn''t sparkle (they do, beautifully!), but step cut sparkle is a bit different from brilliant cut sparkle.

My initial reaction is that it is a *little* too deep at 72.5 - it might face up pretty small. The Color and clarity are great but I also worry about the polish and symmetry. I would only purchase a stone that was Excellent or Very Good. With Asschers, it''s all about the cut!! If the "ring looks lovely" and speaks to you then get it!! I''d say no to a princess - but I''m an asscher girl all the way - an asscher and princess are so very different. If she likes angles then stick with the asscher or an emerald. Good luck!!

HI!

Did the diamond have a GIA report?

That''s crucial in assesing the value of the deal.

Hello,

Yes, the diamond is GIA certified. Sorry, I left that part out.

In terms of price, it sounds fine.
No one can tell you if it's well cut with only numbers.... I have a different opinion about Polish and Symmetry ( if you love the stone in person, Good is sufficient for the pol and symmetry IMO)
As to whether to buy a princess or an Asscher.....tough question.
Obviously you'll find people on both sides of the fence.

Let me ask you this...is she more of a traditional girl- or would you say she's into more modern things?

You could say that an Asscher might appeal more to someone who likes a more traditional look- and a princess might be more for someone who loves more modern styles.
BTW- you could also consider a radiant that might offer a middle ground........

Can you post the dimensions and the crown depth?

Dimensions, sure thing. Sorry about that ommission:

5.72 x 5.71 x 4.14
