Is this design 'trendy'

I have been slowly but surely creating an idea of my upgrade, including its setting. For the longest time I truly thought I wanted my wedding band and engagement ring to match in height and width, I was finally able to try on something that matched my desire, AND I DID NOT LIKE IT. I am a thicker band type-of-gal, so finding a 3mm band in an engagement ring and wedding band that matched actually wasn't that easy, at least where I am from. I added a photo below if you are interested, disregard the actual diamond because that was all I could find.

Anyway, to make a long story short, I'm now reconsidering the whole thing. I still want the band width and height to match, but I think I would like a gradual taper to my cathedral instead. This is a detail I never wanted, because, well, I did not like a gap so a taper was not conducive to my design originally. Now I'm realizing, the gap prevents the rings from looking sawdered together, at least in my opinion.

I recently found this beautiful 3mm eternity and 3mm engagement ring that has a 'tulip/petal' design for the basket. This is the first time in my life that I liked something outside of the normal V style cathedral. I have been contemplating if this is *it*, but again, I don't know if I can even find a ring like this to try on, and I don't know if this is trendy?

Anyone have any thoughts of this style of basket, also, any thoughts of this eternity band. Will it completely destroy the ER?

Thanks :)

**edit** sorry about the red dots, was trying to see how far across 7 stones went.

No I think this is very elegant and classic. I don’t think it will date or look “out of fashion” in a few years. It should stand the test of time very well.

Basket style… yes it’s popular now but it’s popular because it’s pretty and when it wanes in popularity it will still be pretty. Plus few people will notice it because it is mainly visible from the side, so it won’t look dated.

No, not trendy, more a take on a classic basket. Small details like that are how many individualize their rings while keeping within an accepted norm for long term appeal. I consider this a classic style. It's popular because it's beautiful.
The eternity is also a classic.
The eternity being the same height will eat into the support bar/bridge of the main mount over time, but a small 1mm spacer will alleviate that issue. The design together is a good one in that it won't eat into the basket of the stone itself. This small variation makes a difference. The only other way to avoid the damage of the inevitable would be to have a channel or bezeled set band.

That is a very nice way of thinking about it, this is the profile of my current ER (see photo), while I love it (always loved a cathedral), because the bottom part of the V basket actually protrudes into the bar, NO wedding band sits flush with it.

So, I'm thinking, maybe change is good. I would do the 4 prong 'tulip/petal' style, I also added a photo of that. I think they are similar, but as you said, a more modern take of this classic style.

Also, what does it actually mean when an eternity band eats at the metal, does it leave big chunks or little scratches?

Echoing others thoughts in that it's not trendy at all. It's a beautiful take on a classic design.

Think of the diamond girdles on the eternity as teeth on a saw blade and your ering as wood. Over time the girdles will saw away the metal of your ering.

I love the tulip head btw.

I am ALL FOR the tulip head. You can personalize it. The ring in my avatar is tulip based and I am having another one made with a similar basked. From the pictures your new set will be beautiful, soft, and timeless.

Edit: I wear a thin spacer between my wedding band and whichever e-ring I am wearing. My original e-ring is a cathedral, and the avatar photo is not. There is someone here with a princess cut cathedral that I could NOT stop looking at for awhile, I wish I could remember the username... it was some time last year I think and it was an upgrade.

Never be afraid to do something that sings to you. It's your ring!

Found it!! :)

Very pretty! I guess it does look timeless. Since I had never considered a different style, I never paid too much mind to what else is out there. I'm very surprised that it has swayed my decision.

For your spacer, do you have a photo with it on with your set?

Absolutely gorgeous pairing! The thing is, unless the rings are soldered together, rings worn together (even when they are the same height) shift around causing friction. Over time the diamond girdles in the band will cause damage to your ering. Wearing a narrow spacer band will avoid this damage. Etsy has lots of options for spacer bands. Otherwise like @ItsMainelyYou suggested, a channel or bezel set diamond band can be worn safely. As long as you understand the inevitable.

I guess its one of those things, to enjoy them together means there will be some damage. I guess I have to determine the best way to mitigate it for the most part. I don't love the idea of a spacer, but it may be something to consider.

Also - since the rings will be platinum, is there a metal that works better for a spacer?

I would say for a 1mm band, you could get 14k wg to keep the price down. It’s just meant to be a buffer. Or you can spend a little more and get platinum.

Ok! I just wasn't sure if certain metals affected another side by side. I'll definitely look into a 1mm white gold. Do people tend to stick with their same ring size? I know that's probably a silly question, but perhaps it should be a slight bit tighter?

Thanks :)

i know not, nor care if it is trendy
the only thing that matters is you love it
i think its very pretty

This is my ER design! V shaped basket with a wide tapered band. I still love it after 12 years.

When I was ring shopping, I accepted I’ll always have a ring gap with this ER setting and I got the band I liked to wear alone.

I find I don’t need to wear a spacer band with my rings. The bottom of the V on the ER pushes the band away and the stones on my 9 stone don’t protrude to scratch the ER prongs. I also have a wider channel band and a plain band.

Wear what you like!

I have always loved my ring, but unfortunately my V basket juts out quite a bit (see photo) that should I pair it with a wedding band, they end up teetertottering back and forth because the jut out it so large. The wedding band ends up looking ill-fitting if that makes sense, unlike yours where it looks fairly close and not off-kilter from one side to another.

I had thought of doing another V basket (see next photo), it is not completely off the table, with that said, the petal/tulip basket is the first ever that I have ever seen outside of the V that I love.

My basket sticks out the width of the prong like your ring. It doesn’t look like a lot from the picture angles. My band teeter-totters up and down. I have sizing beads in my rings and it helps them stay put.

The tulip design is pretty if it’s very important for your bands to sit close together. You can’t go wrong with either design.

You can pick them up very cheaply. It doesn't matter what metal you use. They can be very unobtrusive when added to your stack, the impact is up to you.
Who knows, you may get like many of us and start accumulating bands over time, wearing multiple, because bands, pretty!
