Hi Everyone,

I’m on the hunt for an engagement ring and I currently have a diamond on hold with JA that I think might be the one. There are some concerns I have with the 34.0 crown angle and 40.6 pavilion angle combination. I’m worried that there might be some light performance issues especially in terms of fire. Since I’m no expert I would really appreciate some help on judging the diamond. My other option would be to go one color lower at an I color VS2 Whiteflash ACA. Which is a little more expensive and definitely less of a good deal.

I’ve posted the certificate along with the ideal scope image of the diamond. I also posted some videos I took of the diamond.

I think this diamond has some extra unwanted obstruction from the crown/pavilion combo and the shallow pavilion depth. You can see some of this from the "paddling" at the arrow tips.

Good call about the paddling, Kim N - despite what looks to be a great looking Ideal-Scope image, the real-world optical performance has some deficit.

The Whiteflash diamond being less of a 'deal' means being more expensive I take it. Just all depends on what you value most in terms of a diamond. If it is color, then going down in color might not be the best option for you. If you value diamond performance, then the Whiteflash diamond would definitely be your best option. At any rate, I am not crazy about the diamond you posted so it would be back to the drawing board for me. Just check out all of your options before making a final decision.

Side note: Wow, what a pick up! I’m learning everyday! PS is such a great place!

Thanks for the reply! May I know what you specifically you didn’t like about the diamond? I ended up releasing the hold but wanted to know for future reference.

Agreed.

I didn’t like the combo of the shallow depth, shallow crown and shallow pavilion. They just don’t play well together in my opinion. Each of those numbers alone would be in a good range but not together. With a shallower crown of 34, I would prefer to see a steeper pavilion of 40.8 or 40.9. Each diamond needs to be evaluated individually though. Always feel free to post any other diamond you are considering - lots of helpful people here!

I'm always surprised when IS or ASETs look promising but then real world pics don't. I've seen it the other way around a million times, but when advanced images are "wrong" it's always surprising

What is paddling?

I think the issues are minute if they exist at all and probably can’t be seen with the naked eye. This is a very large and nicely cut stone. Perhaps there is a more “perfect” cut out there but whether it is worth the other compromises you might need to make to color and size or clarity — or $$$ — is up to you. I like the shorter lower girdle halves on this one, makes it chunky.

Hi All, just wanted to circle back and thank everyone for the replies! I really learned a lot (especially about paddling) and it helped me make my decision.

I went ahead and settled on a Whiteflash ACA I VS2. Sacrificing one color grade in order to guarantee that my diamond is super ideal cut will put my mind at ease. Especially with the setting be yellow gold. Thanks again and my hunt is finally over!

Congrats on your decision! Please come back with pictures of the new ring!
