Is this diamond set too low?

I bought a diamond from BlueNile and was really happy with it when it arrived. 0.57 ct, I, VVS1, ideal specs.
I just had it set and... it doesn't look right. It sparkles ok but nowhere near what it was doing prior to being set. I'm most disappointed that it appears grey.
Is this possibly because it was set too low? It was set lower than I expected.
Any insight would be appreciated.

What a beautiful setting. Have you tried cleaning it? With a baby toothbrush, underneath the stone?

The way that setting is built, there appears to be plenty of light getting into the stone, so I don’t think the setting is causing what you are seeing. However, those diamonds are little oil magnets and any fingerprint can make it look ... not as bright.

So, yeah, clean it and then see what you see. Also, is your phone or shirt or wall in the room where you’re taking the photo grey or dark? Try going by a window and turning so your back is to the window (but not casting a shadow on the ring) and taking a picture like that.

Whenever someone mentions grey, I think clean it. That is what happened with my asscher and when I Louped it, it was like 8 layers of grime causing it.

I do love the setting; is it from Blue Nile? Really pretty.

Thank you for the compliments. I bought the setting on Etsy from a seller called NNJGEMSTONES.

I put it in my ultrasonic cleaner twice and it is definitely looking better.

Jewelers polishing rouge would be the problem - some boiling water and chilled with some windex or ammonia and dish liquid.
And forget baby toothbrushes - the stiffer the better :-)

Before I even saw the other posts my initial thought was dirty! Please let us see another photo after cleaning!

Here it is after 2 trips through the ultrasonic and then soaked and scrubbed as per Garry's instructions. It is definitely looking better but I think there is still some more grime for me to get off of it. It makes sense that there was maybe some polishing rouge left behind from being set.
I'm going to continue to work away at it because I know there is a really nice diamond there.

It made a huge difference! Beautiful!!

Much better! So glad it was a relatively easy fix.

You might find a jeweler with a powerful steam cleaner - or ask your fav barista to give it a blast from behind and all angles.
